EXPAND YOUR BOLDFACE AND THE WINNERS ARE… AZURE EXPERIENCE The Chicago Athenaeum and the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies handed out more than  Good Design Awards in December. As in recent years, electronics manufacturers came out on top, accounting for nearly a sixth of the awards. Contract furnishings dominated the furniture category, with wins for Teknion’s flexible Interpret desking system, Humanscale’s adjustable sit-to-stand table, Knoll’s Lounge soft seating collection, and Allsteel’s frameless, movable Beyond glass walls and Clarity task seating collection. In residential products, Kartell picked up three awards, including one for Tokujin Yoshioka’s transparent table; BoConcept was recognized for the Ottawa dining table, designed by Karim Rashid, and a leaf-shaped dining chair; and Flou took one home for its elegant Essentia bed propped up on bent iron GO TO legs. In textiles, Bernhardt Textiles was lauded for its Fusion and Workshop collections, while KnollTextiles was ZINIO.COMAZURE handed two awards for the Glass and Vivid collections. The American Institute of Architects awarded its gold medal to architect Thom Mayne, founder of the L.A. firm Morphosis and the mastermind behind the new Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas; the Cooper Union in New York; and the Phare Tower in Paris, currently under construction. AIA also selected Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, based in New York, as best firm. Among Williams and Tsien’s achievements are the new Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, a handsome museum that features a spectacular cantilevered light box perched above a grey and gold limestone building; and the David Rubenstein Atrium at New York’s Lincoln Center, a ticketing facility that boasts a floor-to-ceiling fountain, an instal- lation by Dutch textile artisan Claudy Jongstra, and oculus-style fixtures that draw in natural light. Toronto’s Brigitte Shim, Howard Sutcliffe, Marianne McKenna and Vancouver’s James K.M. Cheng have been selected as members of the Order of Canada, one of the country’s most prestigious civilian honours. Shim-Sutcliffe Architects has headed up many refined commercial and residential commissions, including the Integral House, a sculptural home with a performance theatre located on a ravine lot in Toronto. McKenna is a founding partner of Toronto's KPMB Architects and her cultural and educational structures, including the Rotman School of Management expansion in Toronto, are internationally lauded. James K.M. Cheng Architects is renowned on the West Coast for its tall, slender condominiums. Outside of British Columbia, Cheng has designed mixed-use towers in Bellevue, Washington, and Toronto. The pritzker prize winner and co-founder of the Office for metropolitan architecture received the festival’s Golden Lion for life- time achievement in 2010. “We’d like to take a fresh look at the fundamental elements of architecture – used by any architect anywhere, anytime – to see if we can discover something new,” said Koolhaas, hinting at what’s in store for the 14th edition. Istanbul’s Gaia & Gino – a home accessories brand that collaborates with such notable designers as arik Levy, David adjaye and Nendo to create delicate and playful glass vases and candle holders – has officially partnered with Verreum, a prague glass-blowing manufacturer. The newly minted GGV Design partners will be the parent company for both brands. COMING SOON Bjarke Ingels Group has accepted a commission to design a 128-metre-tall mixed-use observation tower in phoenix. The otherworldly, 6,500-square-metre form will feature a spindly reinforced concrete core, and will be topped by a spiralling open-air orb equipped with a promenade to provide panoramic views of the city. The sphere will house retail and recreational space, accessed via three glass elevators. GREEN GOODS Cookfox Architects’ One Thirty West 12th Street, a new condominium in New York’s Greenwich Village, has been lisataylordesigns.com awarded LEED Gold certification by the United States Green Building Council. The firm transformed the pre-war residential building into 43 eco-luxe units and installed UV-filtering casement windows, energy-efficient four-pipe fan coil systems, and a cogeneration plant that supplies clean power for half of the project’s annual energy requirements. COMING IN MAY 2013: IN MEMORIAM Ada Louise Huxtable, the legendary architecture critic, died in January at the age of 91. The pulitzer prize winner was the New York Times’ first full-time architecture critic, LIVE + and she wrote fiercely and passionately for the Wall Street Journal up until her death.
