GODWIN UZOR AT THE 2023 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM) HELD ON JULY 22ND 2023 AT VENUE, BENIN CITY. Dear Professional Colleagues, With utmost gratitude to God for another successful SPE year as a section, it is my pleasure to welcome members of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Section 116, Benin City to the 2021 Annual General meeting (AGM). I would also use this opportunity to appreciate the teamwork of members of the section in achieving our set goals and furthering the SPE mission and vision in our great section. Indeed, the past year has been a tough year with COVID-19 restricting the flow of usual gatherings for section programs but as a team set out to achieve success, we have been able to successfully achieve our goals and program activities despite limitations posed by the restrictions. In this meeting, we would be presenting to our esteemed stakeholders our scorecard for the SPE year 2020/2021, as well as elect new officials that will handle the affairs of the Section in the next 12 months. Over the last 12 months, we attained the milestone of 30 years of furthering SPE’s mission and supporting our local members. This anniversary coincidentally ushered us into a new era for digital transformation where most of our events were delivered virtually or as hybrid events with few in-person gathering while adhering to the COVID-19 protocols. From the inauguration of the present board, we set out to conclude the SPE Benin Energy building, increase professional membership by 10%, sustain our professional, technical, community and membership programs, implement regular monthly technical meetings and fully launch SPE Benin Section website. Today, I am glad to announce that we exceeded our set performance targets at the end of the year. We grew our membership by 42%, achieved membership retention of 80% and delivered strategic programs to engage all demography in Section and Student Chapters. Therefore, I am very excited to congratulate all members of SPE Benin board and volunteers for our collective record achievements this year. We won several global recognitions and awards for the achievements. The most prestigious of these awards is the SPE International 2021 Presidential Award for Outstanding Section. This is the highest honor, recognizing the top 5% of 203 SPE Sections in 143 participating countries worldwide. SPE Benin Section was also recently recognized for SPE International bi-annual membership competition for achieving membership retention requirement. Besides, we received three (3) SPE International Student Chapter Excellence Awards won by University of Benin, Igbinedion University Okada and Afe Babalola University, Ado- Ekiti. More so, Benin Section professional members equally did us proud with several individual professional and technical awards which include SPE International Distinguished Membership award won by Engr Odunayo Oladugba, SPE Africa Regional Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Engineering Faculty won by Professor Olafuyi Olalekan, SPE Africa Regional Service Award won by Engr Soro Augustine and SPE Africa Regional Technical Award in Production and Operations won by Engr Yomi Akinnurun. Lastly, I make bold to say I am proudly a member of SPE Benin Section. Thank you for the opportunity given to me to serve you as Section Chairman for two consecutive years. While, at the later part of this AGM, we hand over the boat of the Section to a brand-new Captain to continue to steer us on the path of greatness, I wish you all and our beloved Benin Section a resounding success in the coming years. 2
