Earl Shilton Town CC 2017A brief Club HistoryOur club, well known throughout the county, has a longhistory dating back over two hundred years. The earliest current known record of a game beingplayed is 1815, which was between a team of playersfrom Shilton and Thurleston against a team fromBarwell. Played at Burbage Common, Shilton andThurleston won the game, over two innings by 35 runsand so the foundations of our great club were laid. Many well known local family names have turned out forthe club including the Balls, Loxleys, Coes and Hightonsand many more. The club is very proud of its players who went on to playfor the county over those two hundred years. From theold stalwarts like the famous George Panter in the1860’s to Sam Coe (holder of the counties highestindividual score of 252 not out againstNorthamptonshire in 1914 for over eighty years), Lewisand Joe Brown and Arthur Hamson during the 1890’sand early 1900’s. Following on with Reg Brown, DickWest, Tom Chapman, Geoff Coe and more recently withNigel Briers and Les Taylor. The Golden Age of the club was at the start of theformation of the South Leicestershire Cricket League in1896. Earl Shilton 1st XI won the Division OneChampionship in 1896,1899,1900,1901,1902 and 1903a truly remarkable performance. It was many years laterbefore the club won the Divison One Championshipagain in 1946, before another similar Golden Age whenwinning in 1970,1972,1973,1975 and 1980. Page No: 4 of 24
Earl Shilton Town CC 2017A major event in the history of the club was the formingof the limited company (Earl Shilton Town Cricket &Sports Club) in 1920 and the purchase of the newground at Keats Lane, set in the heart of the communityand for the benefit of future generations.Joining the Leicester Club Cricket League in 1982, the2nd XI won the Division Three Championship in 1982and 1984 and the 1st XI won the Division OneChampionship in 1982. Following a change to theEverards County Cricket League in the 1990’s, the clubnow play in the Leicestershire & Rutland Cricket Leagueand have been promoted back to the Premier Divisionready for the 2016 season.Along with A.J.Norton and Rural Tankard Cupsuccesses over the years, one of the biggest highlightsin the clubs history was reaching the County Cup Final, played at Grace Road, in 1990 and 1995 losing on bothoccasions, but having beaten top county teams on theway to the final. The first Junior side was formed in 1972 and was thefoundation for our successful Youth teams up to thecurrent date. This proved a feeding ground for the youthof the area with several players over the yearsrepresenting the county at junior levels and becomingthe backbone of the senior teams for years to come.We are very proud of our tradition and encourageplayers, both junior and senior, to join our club andbecome part of the next two hundred years!
