Empowering Lives Shallu Jindal Committed to Chairperson JSPL Empowering Women Foundation & Chancellor OP Jindal University Dear Colleagues, 6 | Jindal | August 2022 Bauji Sh.O.P Jindal ji was the Champion of Girls’ education and he used to say, “Education of a boy uplifts one family, but education of a girl uplifts two families”. I strongly believe that empowering the girl child with education and skilling is the best and wisest option a Nation could have in empowering itself. Therefore , we have been consciously focusing upon Girld child’s education in our CSR programme. On this August Kranti Divas, we launched Jindal Swayam Sampanna Nari (JSSN) programme to support 508 Girls from underprivileged families in Odisha and Chhatisgarh to pursue higher education and Skilling . We have now completed the complete renovation of 114 year old Kishori Raman Girls’ Inter College in Mathura and have provided more than 5000 scholarships to Girl children. We have also promoted 1200 + Self-help groups and Micro enterprises run by village women for their sustainable livelihood. Cherishing the values of Revered Bauji, everyday we are walking an extra mile to build the India of our dreams where women have equal rights & opportunity to contribute to nation-building with their talent and tenacity. Cover Story Bauji A man of Steel with a Heart of Gold When we got independence from the British, our country did not have a manufacturing base and we struggled to make even a needle perhaps. Self-reliance was only a dream, but it was made a reality by few sons of soil. Sh. OP Jindal, also fondly known as Bauji, was the leader amongst this distinguished group. Bauji showed the way to build Self-reliant India through his inspiring vision and initiatives. He was a versatile personality and he succeeded in his endeavors through hard work and determination. He wore many hats – An Industrialist, Philanthropist, Nationalist and a Messiah of the poor. On his 92nd birth anniversary, the countrymen are gratefully remembering him for his contribution to the nation and bringing smiles on the faces of lakhs of families. Jindal | August 2022 | 9

The life and struggle of Bauji is inspiring for entire humanity. He achieved many extraordinary feats in a single birth. Popularly known as Bauji, Sh. OP Jindal was born on August 7, 1930 to a farmer Sh. Netram Jindal of Village Nalwa in Hisar district of Haryana. Bauji was a charismatic personality, and from the very beginning, he had a keen interest in technology and engineering. Compelled by this natural instinct for machines, during his early days as a school student, Bauji would visit automobile repairing shops and volunteer to assist in repairing them. The agricultural conditions of Nalwa were Sh. Netram Jindal dependent on rain water so the scope of development was limited. Therefore Bauji had to look towards east at a very tender age to fulfil his dreams. Lacking the expertise to start a manufacturing unit, Bauji started trading in steel pipes. The early years were tough but he was propelled by his vision and determination to realize it. Thus began the extraordinary journey of Bauji. It was a small incident in Kolkata that changed the course of Bauji’s destiny when he came across a steel pipe that was ‘Made in England’. As a youth, he dreamt of an India where the ‘Made in England’ labels on various products would be replaced by the ‘Made in India’ markings. 10 | Jindal | August 2022

By 1952, he was proficient and experienced enough to set up the group’s first factory at Liluah near Kolkata for the manufacturing of steel pipes, bends and sockets. After a lot of hard work and challenges, Sh. OP Jindal opened a 100% indigenous pipe mill in 1964 with an investment of Rs 42,000 in Hisar. He single-handedly developed all the machinery for this plant without a degree or experience in engineering. He later established the larger Jindal Strips Limited in 1969 and set up a mini steel plant to manufacture coils and plates through the electric arc furnace route. From an indigenous single-unit steel plant in Hisar, the organization grew into a multi-billion, multi-locational and multi- product steel conglomerate i.e. the OP Jindal group. Raigarh, the picturesque cultural capital of Chhattisgarh, was to be his karmabhoomi later, where Bauji laid the foundations of the group’s expansion. Raigarh is housing JSP’s coal-based sponge iron plant – the largest of its kind in the world – a testimony to his vision and nation- building commitment. The Angul Plant of JSP was also envisioned by him which is now a “technology demonstrator” of global repute for Steel production through Coal Gasification plant. Jindal | August 2022 | 11

While self-reliance may have got a renewed thrust in the present times, Bauji used to say, almost half a century ago, “If we are to become a front-ranking nation, we will necessarily have to become self-reliant in industrial development, and we will have to match the developed world in technology.” Releasing his biography on August 7, 2005, the then Prime Minister, Shri. Manmohan Singh had observed: “Om Prakash ji belongs to that rare generation of pioneering Indian entrepreneurs whose roots lay deep in the soil of Mother India, but whose dreams soared into the skies. Men like him mastered modern technology and applied such knowledge in the service of the common man. That he could do so much with so little that was at his disposal when he took first steps, is a testimony to his immense managerial and technical skills.” According to the Forbes Magazine’s list, he was ranked 13th amongst the richest Indians. He was conferred upon the “Life TimeAchievement Award” for his outstanding contribution to the Indian Steel Industry 12 | Jindal | August 2022

by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry. CSR may have become a buzzword today, but for Bauji, it was his life philosophy. He would say his factories and plants were incomplete without the accompanying townships for workers, schools and hospitals. Educating the girl child was an article of faith for him. His commitment towards girls’ education led to the foundation of Vidya Devi Jindal Residential School for girls, the maiden venture of the Vidya Devi Jindal Rural Development Trust established by him in 1981. He was the Chairman of the N.C. Jindal Charitable Trust; Patron and Trustee of Agroha Vikas Trust and Agroha Medical College. His ideas of inclusion, communities, skilling are deeply ingrained in the group. Little wonder then that the OP Jindal group has carved a unique identity for itself, the world over. A visionary who is remembered for his business excellence and social responsibilities alike, Bauji believed that without the upliftment of the Jindal | August 2022 | 13

weaker and backward sections of the society, a nation can never prosper. Thus, he spent a lot of time taking steps to alleviate poverty and boost the backward sections of the society. He represented Hisar in the Haryana Assembly thrice and Kurukshetra in the Parliament. He was appointed Minister of Power in the Haryana Govt. in 2005 from Hisar Assembly Seat. Within few decades his saplings transformed into four giant conglomerates viz Jindal SAW Pipes, JSW, Jindal Stainless and Jindal Steel & Power led by his sons Sh. Prithviraj Jindal, Sh. Sajjan Jindal, Sh. Rattan Jindal and Sh. Naveen Jindal. His wife Smt. Savitri Jindal was a Cabinet Minister in the Haryana Govt. and his youngest son Sh. Naveen Jindal was a Member of the Parliament of India. His third generation is also aligned now with his vision to contribute in Nation Building. Sh. OP Jindal left for his heavenly abode on 31st March 2005 in a fateful helicopter accident at Gangoh in Saharanpur of Uttar Pradesh. He was a visionary man with a rare sense of business acumen and compassion for humanity. The nation will always remember him for his vision, grit, hard work, and courage. 14 | Jindal | August 2022

His words will always guide us - “If there is life, the struggles will go on, but it is our duty to fight them with truth and honesty. No matter how big the obstacles are, hard work and true intentions always win.” Where Others Saw Walls, He saw Doors. Jindal | August 2022 | 15

Earlier, in 2009, the government had permitted that the tricolour can be flown day and night on \"giant flagpoles with proper illuminance and power backup\" after Naveen Jindal had given a representation to the government. \"This is a very progressive decision. This amendment to the Flag Code of India will definitely encourage more and more people to display the Tiranga with dignity and pride on all days of the year and will also give a boost to the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. Jai Hind,\" Jindal tweeted. \"It has been Jindal's dream to see the Tiranga reach every house in the country and he has appealed to the people to display it with pride and take inspiration from our Tiranga,\" the statement said. Successive governments have time and again amended the rules to ensure the flag reaches more and more people--- allowing people to wear the flag, allowing monumental flags, recent amendment in the Flag Code for cloth material and now this amendment to fly the flag 24 hours. \"FFI has given representations and written letters to MHA asking for the same and today it is indeed a proud moment for each one of us,\" said in a statement. Till 2004, ordinary citizens were not allowed to display the national flag except on select days.
