The Bovver Boys used to like me to play this track and I think I had it as a B side to Hey Joe. Flash Fiction 500 It is said that we all have a story to tell, a book inisde us waiting to be written, but do you have a fictional story of 500 words or less that you’d like to share with our readers? Why not email it to: [email protected] for publication in a future issue. One of Life's Stages Since being small all Sally had wanted to do was sing and dance. At six, almost seven years old she’d auditioned for and earned herself, a part in the school play. She couldn’t wait to get home and tell her mum. ‘Mum! Mum, I’ve got a part. I’ve got to sing and I’ve got to read some words too!’ exclaimed Sally. She told her mum all about how she would be on stage wearing a long nightdress with her long hair combed out as if she was ready for bed. ‘I have to walk onto the stage from the right wings and go to the front of the stage in the middle because I am one of the two leading children. There are six of us and we go out in twos. We’ve been given a script to learn and we start by saying, “We are the children. . .” And we are barefoot on the stage.’ Sally worked hard at school, making the most of the rehearsals for the play. Her mum had bought her a new nightdress, not an easy task when every penny in the household was accounted for. It was long and cream with tiny blue flowers all over. There was a frill around the yolk and the sleeves were also long with elastic and frills around the wrists. Sally loved it. As the day for the play drew closer Sally became aware of the fact that some children were messing around, not learning their lines and their moves or forgetting to bring their scripts. Those children were sent away and other children put in their places. But Sally continued to do well in the rehearsals. One Friday, Sally and her mum were late getting up. It was a very rare event. Sally’s mum had forgotten to set the alarm clock, her reliable little green and cream alarm clock with its two bells on top. Pulling on her grey skirt and cardigan, white blouse, red and grey striped tie and her black shoes Sally rushed for the bus, only just reaching it in time. Halfway to school she realised that she had left her script on the table. She was absolutely horrified. At school she wasn’t allowed to go on stage and her place was given to Julia, the girl who stood behind her in the group of six. Sally was out of the play. Sally’s mum found the script at lunchtime and dashed to school but it was too late. Feeling cross, her mum removed a distraught Sally from school and took her home. On the Monday morning Sally’s mum went to the school with her daughter to explain what had happened on Friday. Although sympathetic to the situation, the head teacher had to explain that if she changed the rules for Sally it would be unfair on others who would, quite rightly complain. Sally was heartbroken. Are you as happy as you could be? If not, ask yourself why not? Who would you say is responsible for you being happy? Whenever you look outside for happiness, you are looking in the wrong place. No person, place, situation, or set of circumstances can make you happy unless you are happy INSIDE. I am sure we all know people who appear to have everything that this world can provide and yet are discontent. This is because whatever we have, no matter what it is, we adjust to it and get used to it, and it no longer fulfills us . . . remember that! The happiness and satisfaction in life has to come from inside, because that is where we start to appreciate everything and happiness stems from appreciation. This is often the problem in relationships because we can sometimes look to others to make us feel good. If we feel good to start with, then no one can take that away from us, because contentment and inner peace, leading to happiness, can be locked in, if we want it to be. But let me ask you . . . Do you KNOW yourself? Are you aware of who you are inside? In a relationship, if I don’t know who I am, and he doesn’t know who HE is, then however can we know who we both are? If we are unhappy together then maybe we need to make changes. Don’t wait and expect it to come from others. Each one of us is responsible for who we are. Start making changes on a personal level and see what happens to your happiness boom! You should try it. Try not speaking and see how you get treated. Try smiling and chatting to everyone, and see the response. Try being a little outrageous, and again - a different response. Somehow along the line you will feel good and happy about the result you get, and you will know that you have hit your personal target. What does that prove? Living In Laos ~ The Life of an Ex-Pat Tiger Kingdom, part 2. If I thought being up close and personal with baby tigers was an amazing experience the next experience was both beyond amazing and equally terrifying! Inside my third compound I came face to face with mature adult cats, cats which when standing on their back legs can tower over 7-8 feet tall. The face to face smell from their breath instantly reminds one that these are most definitely not domesticated. Their fur is both beautiful in colour and markings, and exquisitely soft to touch. I recall when I was given permission to get in close, like I was sleeping on its stomach looking into its eyes. I know the fear should have been growing inside me but all I felt was comfort and peace. Until my dying day I will recall the smells, the touch, and the sense of power each of these cats has. My mother loved tigers and I’m pretty sure she would have been impressed, if not a little jealous of this experience. Sadly my time with the tigers was near an end and so I instructed my tuk-tuk driver to take me to the nearby rescued snake world - a place where snakes and other reptiles, rescued from poachers and illegal trafficking, are taken before the authorities relocate back to their native habitat. Snakes - big ones, small ones, slow ones, fast ones - all with one thing in common . . . poisonous! I was told not to worry. ‘The nearest hospital is only 20 minutes away and the poison won’t kill you for 30 minutes,’ said one volunteer worker with a wry smile on his sun-weathered face. Walking around the small compound I felt at ease despite my life-long phobia for all things which slide along the floor, but when I got into the display arena my heart began pumping faster and the sweats began to flow. I chose a seat away from the circle and hoped beyond hope that the Thai handler with very slight stature would keep away from me. Watching men dance face to face with black Cobras was not my kind of fun, although the demonstration about recognising poisonous snakes in South East Asia and how to treat a snake bite was quite interesting. I recall at this point my mind was already beginning to wander! The jungle, the sound of heavy footsteps and the trumpeting calls began to fill my every thought. I was thinking of tomorrow and the early start for my 3 night expedition into the jungle to work with the elephants rescued from a life of torture. The Elephant Nature Park just north of Chiang Mai city in northern Thailand has been established for well over 17 years and, despite a continuing battle with the corrupt government officials and the police, has grown into the wildlife sanctuary with over 250 hectares, now having 44 elephants who have formed their own herds within the park. Volunteers can pay to work with the elephants, learning about how to care for them each day, and this is what I had arranged to do. Naturally I was so excited about this and found on the morning of the start of the adventure that in my group I was the only single person. I had no agenda and no need to prove anything to anyone. I was so eager to experience my first journey into the true wild jungle of South East Asia. The marathon takes place on October 26th, beginning and ending in the city centre near to Trinity College. You may not see Tony training much, as he is out on the hills around Busot before 6.00 am, because it is just too hot to train any later! This will be his ninth full marathon. He has said this is definitely his last marathon, but his wife, Margaret, has heard this after every previous one . . . and so,never say never! Film Review JURASSIC WORLD PG-13 124min Directed by Colin Trevorrow Ancient reptiles roam the earth once more, and while humans observe them in the flesh, the towering creatures will readily observe the flesh of the humans. More than twenty years on from the first Jurassic Park screening the dinosaurs are back, looking as real and as feisty as ever. It must be the special effects, which have certainly progressed in quality since the initial iffy combinations of blantantly plastic and computer generated image (CGI) dinosaurs. Nothing can quite beat the sentimental value of such a classic though,and that’s why Jurassic World was placed into the firing-line from the very beginning. However, it has managed to escape with few injuries, proving to be successful in providing fear, tears and laughter for the audiences to enjoy, whatever their squeamish levels may be. So, what’s different this time round? The prehistoric predators are still injecting fear into people with their pointy teeth, making Jaws look like a cute and cuddly toy. Only, genetic modification has crossed the line and mad scientists create the ‘Indominus Rex’, a dinosaur with power beyond the control of its own creators. And what better place for a flesh-eating monster to run free than Jurassic World; the tourist equivalent to a dinosaur Disneyland. Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Bride Wars) stars as an ex-military man and animal expert, who is the designated saviour of almost everyone on the island, including his love interest, Claire, played by Bryce Dallas Howard (The Village, The Help). Tech Tips Microsoft Office 2016 (Again!) Last month I introduced you to the idea of trying out Office 2016 and told you it expired in mid November. While this was true when the article was written it now appears it might be October when the trial version expires. I was, however, surprised at the end of June when I opened the trial and was told “This trial has expired” and the option to activate appeared. I tried a few options and then clicked on Activate. This seemed to please the system and the expiry date is now in October. So, if you decide to give it a try and you receive the “Expired” message, then just activate it and it should be back in use again. Since then I have been asked to activate it again and it has gone back to November. I suspect that these activations are required because of its frequent updates. I have also installed Microsoft’s Office Mobile on my Android phone (this is a free app and not a trial). While waiting for an appointment, I surprised myself by finding it fairly easy to edit a book I am writing. I keep my works in progress on Dropbox which meant I was able to access it over the internet. The small keyboard is far from ideal, but it got the job done and made use of some otherwise wasted time. Office Mobile is free to download and install and could prove useful if only as a way of proof reading items you may have prepared on a PC or Mac. Windows 10 This article is being written in July before Windows 10 is released so by the time you read this anyone who chose to register for the upgrade should have had the option to install it. Hopefully all has gone well for you. For those of you who are unsure as to whether to upgrade or not, I will report back in September’s magazine to let you know how the installation has gone for me. It would appear that Microsoft are sending out the new version to those of us who have been testing it first and I now have the full versions installed on my spare PC and Eee Netbook. I would expect downloads to happen for those of you registered for the upgrade over the next few weeks prior to the release date of the 29th July. Edge, the new browser from Microsoft, is now fully integrated and also appears to be a step forward from the Internet Explorer of old. My only real criticism lies with the mail app that comes with windows. The current version that comes with Windows 8.1 is quite useable and can be configured in a number of ways to make it work as you would like. The new version, unless they make changes to it, has very little in the way of configuration options. As an example, it insists on bundling emails together in what is currently called “conversations”. This is something most email apps can do, but at the moment you can´t turn it off. There are a number of other backward steps that this app has experienced as well, including the inability to see how many emails you have unread without opening the individual email accounts you may have. Not so much of a problem if you only have one account, but a pain if you have several. Because of this, I have been trying out Mozilla Thunderbird. This is a free email client and supports many of the popular email formats that are around. It was easy and quick 26

You can download it from https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/thunderbird/ I still have had no issues with older or new software functioning properly although I haven’t had the opportunity to fully test software under real life conditions since I am trying Windows 10 on spare PCs only. Google Chrome It is possibly because of the arrival of Edge that I began to look more closely at my browser of choice, Chrome. Although still an excellent browser, it has seemed to be growing more sluggish over the years and I had put it down to my PC rather than Chrome. However, it would appear that Google are well aware that this has happened and they are actively working on a new version to speed it back up again. While you are waiting for it to appear as an update, you can do a couple of things to possibly improve performance. 1 Check what extensions are installed in Chrome a. Open Chrome b. Click on the three lines button at the top right of the window c. Choose More Tools => Extensions d. Either delete or disable (untick) any you do not really need. e. Close and restart Chrome – you may need to restart your PC to see any changes. 2 Install Chrome Beta – warning: If you install it and wish to go back to the normal version you will have to set it up from scratch again. There also appears to be a problem with the beta version when casting to Chromecast. a. Go to https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/beta.html download the version you want. b. Install it as usual. I have tried both these changes on my PC as well as my (Android) phone and my Chrome Book – all have seen improvements in speed, but please heed the warning about Chrome Beta – it is a “before release” version that can have CLINICA DENTAL bugs. Also, to go back to the release version will involve re-installing it and setting it up again. I GEERLINGS haven’t tried going back but I suspect you may well lose bookmarks and passwords etc. BONALBA On Android it is installed as a separate app so you will have both Chrome and Chrome Beta Dr Victoria Garbarino installed.
