Film Review Far From the Madding Crowd Based on Thomas Hardy’s fourth novel and one of his many major literary successes, Far From the Madding Crowd tells the story of independence, loss, survival, and the undoubtedly-exhausting notion of love. Set in the classic Victorian era of the nineteenth century, and displayed in the vibrant countryside backdrop of Hardy’s English dreamland, ‘Wessex’, we follow Bathsheba Everdene, a young woman, living with and working for her Aunt. She soon meets her new neighbour, a wealthy sheep farmer called Gabriel Oak, who after several moments of eye contact and little effort of conversation, asks for her hand in marriage. Only, it’s not quite the romantic fairy tale we thought it would be, because she rather bluntly rejects him . . . And that’s where the whole ‘independence’ scenario comes in . . . After discovering that she has inherited a plethora of wealth from her recently deceased uncle, Ms. Everdene takes on the role as mistress of her newly owned farmland, facing the difficulties of inheriting a male-prescribed role within an unjust, and patriarchal society. She is yet to face further struggles when three men happen to fall hopelessly in love with her. Will she be tempted by tradition, seduced by passion, or charmed by desire? Carey Mulligan plays the character of Ms. Everdene, and after her fairly recent success as the role of ‘Daisy’ in The Great Gatsby, we can tell she’s starting to acquire a worthy taste for extravagant, affluent, and complex characters. Overall, Far From the Madding Crowd could best be described to period-drama lovers, as a unique concoction of Downton Abbey’s scandal, Poldark’s pleasant landscape, and a final sprinkle of Pride and Prejudice’s ingenuity. When asking that question you will get a variety of answers with very few answering the question that was actually asked. They’ll respond with, “I’m a waitress / I’m a car salesman / I am Sam’s Mother / Brother / Father etc. They will tell you WHAT they are, but not WHO they are. I guess this is because we might be shocked or puzzled if someone said, “I’m a very lonely person, trying to get a good relationship going with someone I care a lot about.” This is because in life many of us lose our identity and just concentrate on the role we play as husband / wife / daughter / son etc. This is fine, but it is not WHO we are, and ignoring our inner self is what causes some people a lot of problems and stress. A while ago I was asked to talk to an 11 year old who was very difficult and hard to understand. I asked her who she was, and she immediately gave me her name. I said, “No, not what are you called, but who are you?” She looked at me long and hard and then said, “I am a pest, I drive everyone mad, I cause trouble in the family.” It was like opening the floodgates as it all poured out. You see, she knew who she was! Knowing that enabled me to help her to see who she COULD be, if she wanted. In case you think this is all too heavy and unnecessary, let me tell you that if you want to make your life the way you would like it to be, you have to understand that basic fact of who you are and then build on that to reach out and achieve the things you as a person really want in order to make you happy. Music Ramblings I’ve got a handful of songs to sing you. Can you find the following? Do you remember a certain singer with shining white teeth? They were spectacularly white with the Macleans ring of confidence virtually leaping out of his mouth as he sang about Little White Bulls as one of his Handful of songs. He is extremely successful but not just through his vinyl and he is our first memory. At number two is a bevy of beautiful girls who made money with a song about a Dirty Old Man. This trio of Americans often toured the UK to please a certain member of the Royal family. Do you ever try to do something and just can’t see the wood for trees? For example, you know the need to tidy your room but instead of starting you just stare at the mess. Then, all of a sudden, you see things in the right light and say to yourself I Can See Clearly Now. Well, who had the hit single? When a song is sung about a town or city it conjures up magical images of a really attractive destination. Our next artist sang about Galveston and it was a great country hit which crossed over into the pop charts. Why don’t we have a great song about Benidorm which is every bit as nice? How the passage of time changes our use of the English Language. There are people who would be gobsmacked to see this word in the Oxford Dictionary but language is always changing and when I introduce the next record as being on the Bromide label, I suppose only the older people will know what I mean. The record, incidentally, is …..I Can’t Make It ….and if you don’t know what I’m talking about ask an old soldier. I once had a girlfriend called Sylvia and although I thought her mum was okay I admit to being taken by surprise that she should be immortalised in song. Who had that great hit Sylvia’s Mother? I can honestly say that it was nothing to do with me. The next one even got me guessing for a while but it certainly became the theme for the 1990s with a Citizen’s Charter for just about everything. The song title is Keep the Customer Satisfied and if you guess the singer I’d promise to eat my hat but for the fact that some charter wouldn’t allow it -and it’s a cossack hat! Our next vocalist sang in his own eerie way and was hailed as Britain’s answer to Bob Dylan. The main difference for me was that Dylan often made you know what he was protesting about and I never knew what a Hurdy Gurdy was until I started doing pub quizzes. Do you know which group was named after a drink? Could it be the Lager Shandies, the Brown over Bitters, the Gin and Tonics? Well don’t lose any sleep over it; just think what happened When We Were Young and I’ll tell you a final song when I was young. A certain singer songwriter had a monster with a song about about saucy swimwear and his follow- up was about high-heeled shoes designed to make a male heart flutter at ten paces. The song was Four Little Heels and it wasn’t a soul singer. Remember them now? A Handful of Songs, Tommy Steele (Decca, 1957); Dirty Old Man, Three Degrees (Philadelphia, 1973); I Can see Clearly Now, Johnny Nash (CBS, 1972); Galveston, Glenn Campbell (Ember, 1969); I Can’t Make It, Small Faces (Decca, 1967); Sylvia’s Mother, Dr Hook & the Medicine Show (CBS, 1972); Keep the Customer Satisfied, Marsha Hunt (Track, 1970); Hurdy Gurdy Man, Donovan (Pye, 1968); When We Were Young, Bucks Fizz (RCA, 1983); Four Little Heels, Brian Hyland (London 1960). I hope you enjoyed the memories. You can always visit the podcast library at www.vincetracy.com Vince Tracy

Living In Laos ~ The Life of an Ex-Pat Northern Delights - Heading to Chiang Mai. John Nelson I remember queuing to buy a ticket for the train. Chiang Mai was my destination and I only had to decide 2nd class sleeper sharing with others or 1st class sleeper for myself. I was still new at this travelling adventure, and feeling somewhat shy I opted for the 1st class sleeper. I wasn’t disappointed and although it isn’t to the standard of UK 1st class on trains it was pretty comfy and I had an ‘ice blast’ machine in my room. Sorry that should say Air Conditioning. It was set to ‘arctic’ and so I called it the ‘Ice Blast’, and a very welcome relief to the humidity and heat outside. At around 6pm I recall the daylight outside being switched off and instant darkness came. Daylight lasted approximately 12hours nearly every day here and so once the black night had descended it wasn’t long before the train began to snake its way through the Bangkok suburbs. The orange glow of the city lights eventually faded into the darkness and I felt the train increase in speed. Outside of the windows you could see nothing and so after a shower I decided to head outside of my room and check out the night train. Bustling with hundreds of passengers from all walks of life I often had to press my body against another to squeeze past them in the corridors. Thais and westerners alike! Eventually I found the restaurant car but only through letting my nose follow the smell. Perhaps the noisy beats of the music were another clue that this was the place to be during the night. In this car there were several dozen people all cramming around the tables and leaning out of windows for a chance to breathe some cooler air. I was invited to share a table with a couple of French travellers who were heading north again on what turned out to be their favourite train journey! ‘You’ll understand in the morning’ is all they would say when I pressed them to explain why they liked it so much. The food was plentiful and the beers flowed as conversations were exchanged and soon it was nearly 1am. The music was still playing albeit a little quieter now and the masses of customers had dwindled to around a dozen now. I decided to head to my room and grab a few hours sleep before the break of day would wake me again. I began to feel excited, something which I never felt in Bangkok’s sprawling urban jungle. I smiled at my thoughts ‘A good choice John!’ 5am. WOW. Simply WOW! My bleary eyes opened and focused on the impending daybreak outside. To actually come to your senses and poke your head out of the window of your sleeper room and be greeted by warmth which was accompanied by a mix of diesel fumes and jungle smells is pretty awesome. I was lost for words at the sight of this huge train slowly trundling along through what appeared a narrow gap between the train line and the surrounding jungle. Everywhere was green! For nearly 2 hours I sat watching the changing jungle landscape slowly pass in front of me. Sometimes open plains gave views to the distant mountains before being engulfed by the surrounding canopy of the trees once again. The purser arrived at my room with my bill for the previous nights indulgences, which in all my amazement I had forgotten needed paying, and so I quickly settled up the account and prepared my things for the adventure in the northern delights of Chiang Mai, home to the Elephants and Tiger Kingdom! 22

Mediterranean Gardens Pruning fruit trees Roald Goorman In last month’s issue I wrote about tree pruning in general, this month I will discuss fruit trees in particular. Somehow I get more requests for information about fruit tree pruning techniques than on any other trees, perhaps because other trees are more forgiving and will still grow without us expecting anything else from them, whereas fruit trees might retaliate with little or no fruit harvest when wrong techniques are applied. Proper care of the tree (apart from fertilising and watering) consists of training and pruning a tree. Training a tree is creating a premediated tree architecture with the aim to maximise fruit production and quality. Pruning a tree is maintaining optimum shape of the tree after the ideal shape has been reached with training it. Training can consist of pruning and pruning can be done for the sake of training a tree. However take in mind that when you plant a young fruit tree, everything you do to the tree before it reaches maturity and fruiting age can be considered training, and all you do afterwards in maintaining its ideal shape is to be considered pruning. Let’s first consider the newly planted fruit tree: You would need to remove 1/3 of the above ground biomass to compensate for the root disturbance caused by planting the tree in the first place. Decide at which height you want the canopy to start, as all side branches lower than that imaginary height will have to be removed. Above that height, the main branches forking from the main stem have to be thinned to a limited branch number. It is hard to say how many branches are ideal, as this really depends on growth vigour of the tree and the eventual size you want the tree to attain. As a rule of thumb I would say limit the number to 3-5 main branches. More branches makes for a more dense canopy with less light filtering to the fruit and thus making ripening of fruit difficult, also more branches will produce more fruit and as the tree has a limited amount of energy to distribute, this will result in smaller, poorer quality fruit. Less is more should be the rule here. Open centre system: Once the desired canopy height has been established and the side branches to be kept are selected, the main leader (the tip of the stem from which the branches fork) has to be cut down to just above the main branches. This is done to keep the canopy open so light can evenly penetrate and help to ripen the fruit. This is the case for plums, peaches, apricots and nectarines. Peaches, apricots and plums bloom and fruit on one year old wood. Pruning these trees consists mostly of thinning the canopy, removing dead, diseased or excess wood. The most common mistake is not, or too little, pruning of the tree as this will result in sickly trees that succumb quickly to pests or overproduction of vegetative growth or small fruit. The most complicated are the apricots, since they flower and fruit on two year old wood, so two year ahead planning has to be done to ensure proper fruiting. Also when opening up the tree, you would need to remove quite a lot of branches (the apricot is a vigorous branch producer) to prevent the tree from growing too dense and bearing too much fruit, don’t remove too much either as the young wood will produce next years crop. The difficulty with ahead planning causes people to think that this tree has high yield years alternated with low yield years, however this is not necessary once you get the hang of it. 24
Central leader system: Apples, pears, persimmons are examples of trees that need their main leader to be spared for proper growth. However for proper growth and maintaining an open tree architecture to ensure light penetration side branches have to be spaced wide enough (vertically and horizontally) along the main leader. Prune away excess branches on young trees, anything that is less spaced than 20 cm vertically should be removed, sparing the strongest most vigorous of the branches. Apples and pears tend to have an upward narrow growth, to ensure branches grow more sideways, they can be weighed down at the tips, or blocks of woods can be placed in the crotch (the space between the main leader and the base of the branch) to force the branch to grow away from the main leader. Pruning period: The best time to prune is late winter, when sap flow is still low or inactive, and thus cause less bleeding of the tree. Also, less bugs are active, causing less problems on the fresh cut wounds. January is the best month in our corner of Spain, no later than February. Anything you do after that should be just corrective pruning of minor shoots or the removal of dead or diseased wood. Pruning tools: Secateurs/pruning shears for the thinner branches and a fine-toothed saw for the larger branches. When you respect the ideal pruning period, no dressings need to be applied over the cut as the tree has the time to slowly heal the cut wounds itself. If the risk of fungal attacks or borer insects exist, apply fungicides or pesticides on top of the wound. 25
