Book Review Another of my reviews of some of the books I have read and loved. They may not be “classics” but I think they are worth a read. In general, I read using either a tablet or a Kindle or a Kobo reader, but I have indicated in which formats the book is available. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did. The 39 Steps By John Buchan This book was written way back in the early 20th century. It is what would have been described, when I was a child, as a “ripping yarn” and is about the build up to the first world war and how spies worked in the UK as Germany made their plans. What I find so enjoyable is partly the large part of the book where our hero travels from London by train to Dumfries where he changes to a slow train on towards Newton Stewart, alighting in Galloway and then travelling by foot across the hills to the north. Lines now a dim and distant memory. Then later when he travels with a Germany back in the 1960s and my cattle drover to Moffat. own connections with Cryptography in the 1980s, but whatever the I might also have a love of spy reason, if you haven’t yet had the stories due to the adventures my opportunity to read The 39 Steps I late brother had in Eastern would definitely recommend it. This is available as a paperback from all good booksellers and on Kindle, Playbooks, Kobo and almost every eBook store. Several films have been made of it, some closer to the book than others. 71
