Rosa Estopà (Coord.) 107 About the director of the project Rosa Estopà is graduated in Catalan Philology (Universitat de Barcelona, 1992), post-graduated in Language Pathology (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 1993) and PhD in Linguistics (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 1999). Lecturer of Departament of Translation and Linguistic Sciences (Universitat Pompeu Fabra), researcher of IULATERM research group of Institu Universitari de Lingüística Aplicada (IULA), and coordinator of Observatory of Neology. She has participated in different projects about Lexicology, Terminology and Neology. Now, she is main researcher of the project: Playing to define the sciences (FECYT-FCT-12-4482/ FECYT-FCT-11-2501). In the context of this last project, My First Dictionary of Science was elaborated, and also Travel Laboratory and Online Laboratory of the Words of the Sciences. About this project: The knowledge of science and technology is represented and transferred through words that have a specialized, precise and concise meaning. Having access to specialized knowledge allows an appropriate and accurate use of terminology. However, the process of becoming an expert in any speciality is very progressive and begins at a very early age of a person. Working on language, together with scientific knowledge from the very beginning, is crucial for any future scientific profession, since there cannot exist any science without language, be it to denominate the science, to refer to it or to communicate it. The holistic knowledge reinforces the interdependence of words (language) and knowledge (science).
108 My First Dictionary of Science In the project Jugando a definir la ciencia (Playing to define the sciences) we assume that the basis of specialized knowledge begins to be acquired at a very early age of a person. Thus, even before starting to learn basic concepts at school, we already have some significant ideas that will influence the construction of scientific knowledge. The object of our study are basic scientific words such as water, space, star, brain, ice, death, sun, heat, speed, air, life, etc. in the context of the first two years of compulsory primary school education in Spain, that is, pupils aged from six to eight. My first dictionary of science is a very special book. It is special because it has been written by boys and girls of five, six, seven and eight years old who think like you and who are the same age as you. It is also special because they have written it for you. And finally is a special book because it’s not a story but a dictionary. And a dictionary for you, made with everything that boys and girls of your age know, is something very rare: it’s a different kind of book, original and new, that I think you will like very much! 9 786588 719169
