\" \"A dream written down with a date becomes a goal. A goal broken into steps becomes a plan. A plan backed by your action makes your dreams come true. - Greg Read
Bill’s Notes BILL GARDINER“A dream written down with a date becomes a goal. A goal broken into steps becomes a plan. A plan backed by your action makes yourdreams come true.” - Greg Read.Who better than Cleveland native Lebron James to prove those statements to be true. When LeBron came back to Cleveland he knewthat his return was setting the expectation to bring a championship to the city. However, LeBron spent very little, if any, thinking about thepossibility of failure. Rather, he thought about what it would take to lead his team to victory, and then set out to make it happen.Back on the night of June 19, 2016, all the hard work, dedication, and commitment paid off when the CAVS won the NBA Championship.LeBron dreamed his dream and made it possible. He showed what can be accomplished when you believe in yourself and those aroundyou. What have we and our advisors been thinking about for our future and new growth possibilities? What is our dream as a company? Isthere anything missing? What are our goals? What can we accomplish? Our imagination is a powerful tool and we need to use it as wedevelop our plans for 2017 and beyond.Of course, success isn’t just about dreams and plans. So much of it is about HOW we go about it. We often say and/or think about ourcompany culture – and how we should or do handle things.Plain Dealer sports writer Terry Pluto recently wrote “Deliver truths with kindness to show you care.” He mentioned that the former Brownsdefensive end turned prison minister Bill Glass developed this rule, “If you don’t know, go POSITIVE – you can always go negative later ifthings get worse.” Please never say, “I told you so.”Terry wrapped up his column with the following passage: Matthew chapter 7 verse 12, \"So in everything, do unto others as you would havethem do unto you.” THE GOLDEN RULE.Isn’t that a wonderful guide for living life? 3
CornerCASE'S Fall is a season of change and, since my last column, we In my prior columns, I have often written on the importance have had two events that were heavily focused on change of Client relationships. We all Besides praising the year-to-date performance, the Advisors need to embrace the fact that change is inevitable in this fast also emphasized how impressed they're with our company's paced world we live in. In doing so, we also need to continue commitment to invest in Associate professional development to build our Client relationships, even when we have to correct and training. In addition, the Advisors highlighted on what they errors or misunderstandings. observed to be a consistent message they heard throughout the meeting from our team leaders; our team is focused on Clients and relationships, not just customers as transactions, as we have become a professional services business.4
So, what about that question that I wanted to address 5regarding change within GARDINER?We have often discussed the importance of Associatedevelopment, as well as the importance of succession plan-ing to ensure that GARDINER remains to be vibrant andcontinues to grow. In that vein, as many of you know, abouttwo years ago Bill named me CEO in addition to my title asPresident with the thought that one day I would move outof the day-to-day President role to make room for and helpdevelop a new President of GARDINER.I understand there has been a lot of questions and conjectureabout my future, such as when I am going to retire? Why isTodd Barnhart spending more time with me, Rick and Bill? And why is Todd so involved in our strategic planning? Toaddress that as directly as I can; as you know, we recentlypromoted Todd Barnhart to General Manager and yes, we areworking down a path of havingTodd succeed me as President.Like a lot of what we do, there is no definitive timeline for thischange. I do not have plans to retire completely, but ratherto serve as CEO when Todd eventually assumes the day-to-day role of President. As Bill stated in his speech at theChristmas Party last year, Bill, Rick, and I will be around aslong as we physically can. The GARDINER team/family meansa lot to us; we want to continue to help the team by sharingour knowledge and experiences, as well as support our nextgeneration of leadership in realizing our Mission and Vision. Finally, thank you for your efforts in the first 3 Quarters of2016. WE ALL need to commit to build on our successes, new skills, new tools, new partnerships and new capabilitiesto finish the year strong and build a strong backlog for 2017and beyond. \"Change is inevitable; progress and growth are optional.\"

CLIENTFOCUS “ Conversational Commerce Shifts Customer Relations Technology and innovative design have made many products and services more predictable and efficient and in addition, they have changed the way companies interact with customers. In years past, the basic goal of keeping customers satisfied has always been at the heart of customer service. This meant getting questions answered quickly, assisting in resolving any issues and treating customers with respect. However, in today's modern world, there's a whole lot more to it than that. Several years ago, the relationship between a company and its prospective customers was very different than it is today. There was far less information available online, and customers had to rely on a company to get information about their product and services. This empowered the company, who at the time held all of the power. However, smart business leaders know that customers are now in the driver's seat when it comes to being in control. With the rise of the Internet, and the increased availability of information across all forms of media, customers have become less dependent on companies. The Internet has revolutionized direct communication, and has lead to convenience becoming an essential part of customer experience. It's a critical factor in determining how customers make decisions about what to buy, what services to use, where to go, and with whom to engage. Even if you have the friendliest and most efficient support staff in the world, it won't do your business any good if your customers can't get in touch with them. Today, we as consumers crave 1-to-1 contact with each other, including from the companies we are dealing with. There's a fundamental shift taking place in the customer service world, called Conversational Commerce. The term was coined in 2015, Chris Messina described Conversational Commerce: “… conversational commerce largely pertains to utilizing chat, messaging, or other natural language interfaces (i.e. voice) to interact with people, brands, or services and bots that heretofore have had no real place in the bidirectional, asynchronous messaging context.” It changes the dynamics of the customer experience by putting the customer in control, all while providing a personalized, human-like experience. How Conversational Commerce Will Change Your Service: 1. From transaction to relation 2. Reduced service pressure 3. Transaction on and off the website 4. Social media service in the decline As a result, companies have been forced to shift their focus from selling to helping; from transaction to relation; from monologue to dialogue. With this in mind, it is important for companies to remember that when creating customer experiences, the perception of convenience is as important as the actual benefits of saved time and effort. Conversational commerce has proven to be the future, and only organizations that are willing to adapt and respond to this shift in business-consumer dynamics will survive. >> On the following page you will find Client feedback we have received through CVAP meetings from the second and third quarter of the year.10

This was the main topic of discussion during my recent reviewKristie Gallagher with Barb Trusnik. Barb enlisted the resources of Kristie GallagherHuman Resource Leader and together they were very helpful. They suggested and allowed me the time to explore all facets of GARDINER by “interviewing” key players in other departments. Kristie and I delved into my past work experiences, my future goals, and what parts of my current job I enjoyed the most, this created a lot of self-reflection. It was because of Barb’s encouragement and Kristie’s direction that I was able to explore a new path without concern of losing my job. It was through this process that I discovered the open position in Human Resources which fit perfectly with my past work experience, my interests and my future goals; my new path toward success emerged. I learned that by keeping an open mind, you are able to be more creative with your career moves. If you have the desire for change, you can express it. If you have a desire to expand your knowledge, you can pursue it. Your success may not involve a departmental change or even a position change; it can be whatever you want it to be. There are endless possibilities for change and growth at GARDINER but they aren’t always as obvious as stepping on the next rung of a ladder. It is the people around us and the drive within us that will get us to the success we aspire. Thank you GARDINER for believing in me. - LISA DEBOE 13

[ REMINDERS ]FORBES HOUSE Calling All Elves: Each Holiday Season GARDINER Associates have made it a tradition to help out families who are less fortunate than us, in order to spread the spirit the season. This is our 9th year and we have again committed to helping 25 families in need. There are 25 new families that have, or will leave the shelter shortly. These women and children are in need of help. Most of these families left their homes with only the clothes on their backs. Providing a Christmas dinner, pantry stock and some gifts under the tree would brighten their Holiday and start the New Year off with a heart full of hope. Baskets will soon begin to line the hallway to the kitchen. Your donation of canned goods, dry goods, soap, toilet paper, toys and puzzles will bring tears of joy to these families. If you don’t want to do the shopping, the elves at GARDINER will do it for you. If you would like to contribute, please contact Laura Whelan.
