MAstars reveals the work of some of the most promising artists from MA courses the length and breadth of the UK. Each year we select a number of shows for influential curators, writers and other art professionals to visit. Their brief is simple: choose the student whose work makes the deepest impression and tell us why. At the end of the year we feature all the selected students in this special celebratory yearbook. ≥ Find out more axisweb.org/features/profile/mastarsORE W o R D PG ≥2

ma s We break and remake images every day, selecting, collectingch i s o n and storing some while discarding others. ted by All of us look at images in oldrick different ways; a painting or ad might be scanned in a flash or carefully studied, inciting feelings of anger or profound sadness, or no feelings at all. Howsoever we might perceive anything visual, we remake what we see when we imperfectly remember the fragments or caricatures of the original. Perception and cognition are intimately tangled. ≥ Read more PG ≥4

You could smell Elizabeth-Anne Curistan’s 'Neither' (2014) from the corridor of the MFA University of Ulster degree show. It was a particular smell of burnt wood – a smell that might conjure up images of a bonfire or an arson attack. Fire seems to have that unique power of simultaneously representing playful adventure and evil destruction, the energies of life and entropy in equal measure. ≥ Read more ted byP ac k e r t h - A nn e s t an PG ≥12

Ga l v i nted byGibsonMA Ceramics & GlassRoyal College of ArtIf you’re reviewing a piece of art and you find yourselfseeking references from the first chapter of Genesisas well as googling information on a cult eighties horrormovie then you know its maker is on to something.Sorsha Galvin’s work pulls off the wonderful trickof being both primal – in 'Fallen' (2014), for example, she covers parts of her body with earthenware before pouring plaster into the mould she’s created, subsequently the clay is peeled away leaving thefinished result – and vaguely horrific at the same time.≥ Read more PG ≥14
I don't normally expect to be so confronted by jewellery, or in this instance jewellery-cutlery, but in the case of Annelisse Pfeifer's 'Surrealist Banquet' (2014), I came away from the MA show at the School of Jewellery in Birmingham feeling mildly distracted. Over the subsequent week I found my mind returning to the work - so much so, I went back for a second visit. ≥ Read more Selected by F l iss Q u i c k A n n e l iss e Pfeifer2014 MA[stars] PG ≥32
