MODERN TOWERS ARCADE BUILDINGS INFRASTRUCTURE PARKS COMMERCIAL RADIATION The commercial activity in New China Building has been grow- ing dramatically since 2000. It’s the center of the wholesale and retail area even it ‘s vacant for 20 floors. The New Asian International City and the Hongbiantian Costume Trading center becomes the right hand on trading for this area. The Nanfang Building has faded its role recently. We assume that if we take the advantage of the aggregating effect of the New China Building, and making improvement for the trading system, economy, and environment, the activity in this area would be continuously growing.

A NEW SCENIC CITY ANCIENT CANTON ANCIENT TIME In the ancient time, the water transportation was the main and V only way that western world can trade with Canton. Also, in the inner Canton city, water carriage connected the daily life of the THE PEARL RIIVER SEID Canton citizen. REN MIN NAN ROAD FROM 1900-1990 THIRTEEN FACTORIES STREET Before the construction of the Ren Min Nan overpass, the Ren Min Nan street was the most prosperous commercial street YANG SHUZHI @ THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG (HKU) over China. For the efficiency of circularizing the vehicle driving modern city, the Ren Min Nan overpass shorten the time to travel around the city. However, it divided the Ren Min Nan area and covered the whole street, it made the spatial quality decreased. NOW The Thirteen Factories Street is still flourishing for its cloth wholesaling industry. But it was somehow disconnected with the riverside because Ren Min Nan road is the main path to connect them. The Overpass and the vehicles made this road crowded and chaotic. Because of the isolation of all these important spaces, the historical value and its future potential value are broken into pieces.

DOUBLE LEVEL STRATEGY ELEVATED LEVEL The elevated level is aimed to connect the west and east part divided by the overpass. It provides more possibility to connect different area. We propose to change part of the vehicle overpass into pedestrian footbridge in a long term. GROUND LEVEL In The ground level, we suggest to change the Ren Min Nan Road back to a pedestrian commercial street as it used to be. Plus, we want to re-create south-north oriented venues to connect the riverside and the inner city. To regain the rela- tionship with the nature. The target of the double level strategy is: Re-Connect the isolated places. Re-Gain the relation hip between human and nature. Re-Mix the monotonic functions. Re-Activate the quality decreasing spaces.

The planning adjustment is being published on the official website of the Planning Bureau for pre-approval. The New China Building was once the famous unfinished building in Guangzhou. After sever- al twists and turns, the property auction was taken over by the current Dongjia Guangdong Jinsuifeng Industrial Co., Ltd., and its fate has always been the focus of social attention. Jinsuifeng Industrial Co., Ltd. recently submitted an application for planning adjustment of the New China Building. It is pro- posed to change the functions of the 21st to 40th floors of the project from apartment and hotel to business office. Zhou Feng, the research department of Mantanghong Real Estate, said that the atmosphere of the apartment hotel market in the 13th line is very general. The vicinity of the New China Building is dominated by wholesale markets such as clothing wholesale and electronic components wholesale. If the high-rise part is changed to a display-type office building, the market is expected to be better. Another industry source believes that apartments and hotels are mainly rent-based, but if they are changed to commercial office, they can be rented and sold, and they can withdraw funds more quickly. Structure Concept TOWER Le Corbusier - Domino System DECK Deck Extension System TYPOLOGY 1 We’re inspired by Domino System ( Le Corbusier) diagram. We try to keep the top of the structure as a flat rigid grid system for future extension, to get a flexible and unify solu- tion. But we can not set all columns to the ground if we keep the original beam- column system, so we have to grab some footprints to the same point.

TYPOLOGY 2 Longer span, But the parts with highly inclined members are super unstable. YANG SHUZHI @ THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG (HKU)

TYPOLOGY 3 We try to use truss to enforce those weak parts, but this doesn’t work because those inclined members are still the main part to take the force.

TYPOLOGY 4 We try to add supporting points in the middle of those members, but it contributes just a little bit to take the force. YANG SHUZHI @ THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG (HKU)

TYPOLOGY 5 We make the structure as a spatial truss that consist of 4 long main truss and horizontal members. Its stable when it face the gravity, but unstable with the torsion. TYPOLOGY 6 - FINAL TYPOLOGY We made the button surface of the truss as a double curve surface to resist torsion. And we add 3 cores as the cores for future extension high-rises. 600mm 800mm 1000mm 1200mm 1400mm 1600mm 1800mm 2000mm MEMBER SIZE OPTIMIZATION DIAGRAM
