While superficial similarities may exist between Gyaru and blackface, Gyaru provides valuable insight into the shifting beauty ideals and the agency of individuals, particularly women who challenge the notion of conforming to a specific ‘feminine’ ideal. Gyaru can be rightly viewed as a feminist movement, where women assert their autonomy and defy Japan’s beauty standards.
