ESTATE PLANNING Four articles on Estate Planning, Wills and Thrusts have been printed in the Circuit Rider so far this year. This is the last installment. How do I get started? The first step is to schedule an appointment with an attorney with estate planning experience. You will likely be asked to complete a questionnaire. In preparation for your initial meeting, you should organize the following: Outline your objectives and make a list of your questions. Make a list of all your assets, how they are titled, and who you have designated as beneficiaries on non-probate assets (life insurance, etc.). Estimate your outstanding debts – how much is left on your mortgage, car payments, credit card debt. aMbaokuetathliestfoolflofwamin iglyqmueesmtiboenrss:, other individuals, your church and charities you would like to benefit and think Are these individuals mature enough to handle money? Are any of these individuals dealing with problems such as substance abuse? Gambling issues? Divorce? Is your child married to someone you do not approve of? Is any beneficiary disabled of receiving public benefits? Should an inheritance be held in a trust for the individuals benefit? Is any beneficiary in a profession that is prone to lawsuits? Will any beneficiary be facing potential estate taxes themselves? What church and charities are important to me? What organizations have helped me through difficult times? Where do I want to make a difference? Do you want to make sure that young beneficiaries use the money for education or other prudent endeavors? Are you concerned with passing your property to your heirs in a tax efficient manner? Who would you like your estate to go to in event your beneficiaries predeceased you? Would you like to include gifts to your church or favorite charities? Who would make decisions, health and financial, for you if you were alive but not able to make decisions yourself? Do you have a non-citizen spouse? Once I have these documents in place, am I done? It is important to review, and possibly revise, your documents overtime. Your estate plan may need revising if: You move to a different state. Your financial situation changes, for the better or for worse. Your marital status changes or you have additional children. Your choices for guardian, executor, trustee, power of attorney or health care agent change. You acquire apnroinpheertryitaonuCcteoa.fmstialltee. & Ray Cascia You receive The tax laws change. Heather & John Conklin You want to add or delete beneficiarie s. A beneficiary is no longer living. Your Will can be a testimony to both your faith in others and your faith in God and the church. A bequest to the Pearl River United Methodist Church extends your love for it beyond your lifetime. 5
