Sunday 1st November 2020 ST GEORGE’S CHURCH Every person complete in Christ - Colossians 1: 28 WELCOME BACK to St George’s church! Finally, after many months of meeting Online we are now able to meet together, in person. Thank the Lord and rejoice with us. You will notice that Church has changed in many ways, but the Lord remains the same and so does our mission of presenting everyone complete in Christ. God has given us new ways of sharing Christ with our world, our city, and our neighbours. He has also given us news ways to develop how we nurture our faith and support each other in the Lord. Thanks for being part of these new ways. THE COLLECT FOR 4TH SUNDAY BEFORE ADVENT Almighty and eternal God, you have kindled the flame of love in the hearts of the saints: grant to us the same faith and power of love, that, as we rejoice in their triumphs, we may be sustained by their example and fellowship; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. AMEN. http://www.stgeorges.org.sg https://www.facebook.com/stgeorgeschurchsingapore 1
EPHESIANS 1:18,19a I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. The apostle Paul was a truly remarkable apostle who brought the good news of the kingdom of God to the known world. What drove him ? What made him persevere against monumental odds and great suffering ? What kept him going when everybody deserted him ? It can be explained by what he saw. The apostle Paul prayed for the Ephesians Christians to see with their hearts, to see the spiritual realities, which he himself saw, in Jesus Christ. He saw what his physical eyes cannot see. He did not see secret, coded images. He saw spiritual realities. These spiritual realities are in Jesus Christ. In Christ, the believer embraces all that Christ has won through His death and His resurrection. 2
Paul named these as victorious, conquering hope, certainty of our glorious inheritance preserved by God, and the incomparably great power of God’s presence and work in the life of the believer. When these three spiritual realities captured his heart, the apostle Paul became a transformed person, intent on the mission of preaching the good news of the kingdom of God to all the Roman empire. These realities gave him the resolve to lay down his life in the service of His Saviour and Lord. Dear friends, do you know what the Lord has accomplished and what He has obtained for you, His sheep ? We may think that we have knowledge and understanding. Have this knowledge and understanding made a difference in how we live and what we live for ? I put it to you that unless knowledge and understanding leads us to spiritual realities and our hearts are won by these spiritual realities, how we live and what we live for, will not be any different from any unbeliever. I put it to you that we would share similar values, attitudes and concerns in life as those who are not saved if we cannot see the spiritual realities. Friend, we are saved for, and into the spiritual realities in Christ Jesus ! Let us see with eyes of our heart, be captivated by overcoming hope, be looking to our reward and inheritance in God, live by the power of God in us over sin, the world and the devil. Rev Paul Tan 1st November 2020 3
2 Peter 1:1-11 1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours: 2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self- control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. 10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 4

Thus Table Talk is starting, as a discussion group, at a time to enable those who attended church and those who didn't, to use Zoom to chat and then talk about issues that came out of the Church Service and Sermon for the day, and then pray for one another. All done in a safe socially distanced way. Join us at 7 pm Sundays (stay for as long as you like): Join Zoom Meeting For Zoom details, please email Betty Wu at [email protected] 13

A Farewell Note from Rev Dr Soh Guan Chin to St. George's Church Composed 4 October 2020 Warm Greetings in Christ, dear people of St. George's Church! It has been my joy and privilege to have served with our parish for 6 years since 1 October 2014. Rev. Mark Dickens was Vicar then. I was asked by Bishop Rennis Ponniah, who has just retired, to assist him as priest. It was arranged as an agreement between my Mission, The Joshua Mission, and St. George's Church. My role was to work with him, and cover for him, when he had multiple engagements. This included celebrating, preaching, or officiating on Sunday communions & services, baptisms, weddings, funerals, home blessings, birthdays, and like pastoral duties. May the Lord continue to bless every family and every person who received from Him through these ministries, not just those I did, but all at St. George's. 15
The time for my farewell has come because of the growth of my Mission. When I joined St. George's, my Mission had 6 countries in its preaching and teaching network. It now has 18. Therefore, my load as Founder & International President, to teach, develop teaching materials, organise and administrate has grown. Also, over these years, more clergy and staff have been engaged at St. George's. Hence it is timely for me to focus more on my Mission. My attachment ends on 31 October 2020. But I am based in Singapore, and you are very welcomed to receive the preaching & teaching that is offered through my Mission, and to participate. Please do visit the Mission website www.thejoshuamission.net for messages & information, and to give, as the Lord may lead. By the way, the Mission is not named after me. Both the Mission and I are named after the “Joshua” of the Bible. Thank you very much to you, the parish, to Rev. Ian Hadfield, the PCC, and the leaders, for all your prayers, fellowship, and funds to my Mission. I am sure there will be future opportunities to work with St. George's. May the Lord's blessing abide upon us all to worship and serve Him fruitfully for His glory. Revd. Dr. Soh Guan Chin (Joshua YJ Su) 16
A FINANCIAL GIFT TO SAY \"THANK YOU” to Rev. Dr Soh Guan Chin If you would like to say \"Thank You\" to Rev. Soh in a financial way in order to support The Joshua Mission, then please give through an envelope by cash or cheque marked \"Gift Rev. Soh\" or put that description in the details field in your electronic transfer. Please do so by the 2nd November. 17
