Sunday, 9th July 2023 SAINT GEORGE’S CHURCH Every person complete in Christ - Colossians 1: 28 W ELCOME to Saint George’s Anglican Church, a Church for all Nations! We are very glad that you have joined us today. If you are simply visiting, we hope that you will leave us having experienced encouragement and challenge from hearing God’s word, praying to him, singing in your heart to him, meeting with him and with his people. If you would like to join us more regularly at St George’s, then please let us know by contacting the office on [email protected] Our website is also helpful www.stgeorges.org.sg Our desire for everyone who attends St George’s is that we will be more mature in Christ than when we arrived. Yours in Christ, Canon Lewis Lew THE COLLECT FOR FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Almighty God, without you we are not able to please you. Mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. 1

Acts 8:1-25 In Acts 1:8, Jesus commanded His disciples to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Up to Acts 7, their witnessing had been confined to Jerusalem. Acts 8 provides a turning point, for we see their witness moving to Judea and Samaria. The gospel is preached to non-Jews for the first time. Following Stephen’s martyrdom, Saul led a violent persecution against the church. All the Christians (except the Twelve) were scattered into the surrounding regions of Judea and Samaria. We might have expected these displaced Christians to go into hiding or remain silent in their witness, fearing arrest or death. However, we don’t see that. Instead, “Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went” (8:4). The gospel advanced even in the face of persecution. We thank God for the courageous witness of these ordinary Christians who boldly shared the gospel despite hostility. Philip, one of the seven deacons chosen to oversee the daily food distribution for widows, began to preach the gospel to non-Jews— specifically, Samaritans, whom Jews did not associate with and whom they hated and despised. However, here we learn that the gospel and the gift of the Holy Spirit are meant for everyone who repents and believes in Jesus. The gospel isn’t restricted to the Jews! Jesus Himself crossed racial, religious, and social boundaries in His encounter with the Samaritan woman (John 4). God desires true worshipers who will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth (v. 23), regardless of their background. Jesus declared His identity as 2

the Messiah to the Samaritan people in John 4, and \"because of His words, many more became believers\" (v. 41). Jesus challenged His disciples, saying, “Open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest” (John 4:35). We are to see that the gospel and the gift of the Holy Spirit are for everyone, not just for the Jews. God calls all to repent and believe in Jesus. May we ask God to help us share the gospel with everyone—even those we feel uncomfortable with—even in the face of hostility, rejection, and opposition. Blessings, Sean Tan 3

Psalm 45:10-17 10 Listen, daughter, and pay careful attention: Forget your people and your father’s house. 11 Let the king be enthralled by your beauty; honor him, for he is your lord. 12 The city of Tyre will come with a gift, people of wealth will seek your favor. 13 All glorious is the princess within her chamber; her gown is interwoven with gold. 14 In embroidered garments she is led to the king; her virgin companions follow her— those brought to be with her. 15 Led in with joy and gladness, they enter the palace of the king. 16 Your sons will take the place of your fathers; you will make them princes throughout the land. 17 I will perpetuate your memory through all generations; therefore the nations will praise you for ever and ever. 4

Acts 8:1-25 1And Saul approved of their killing him. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. 2 Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. 3 But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison. 4 Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. 8 So there was great joy in that city. 9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great, 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.” 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery. 5

12 But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw. 14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19 and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! 21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. 6

22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.” 24 Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.” 25 After they had further proclaimed the word of the Lord and testified about Jesus, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages. Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30 16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others: 17 “ ‘We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’ 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.” 25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the 7

wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. 27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” 8
