Sunday 11th October 2020 ST GEORGE’S CHURCH Every person complete in Christ - Colossians 1: 28 WELCOME BACK to St George’s church! Finally, after many months of meeting Online we are now able to meet together, in person. Thank the Lord and rejoice with us. You will notice that Church has changed in many ways, but the Lord remains the same and so does our mission of presenting everyone complete in Christ. God has given us new ways of sharing Christ with our world, our city and our neighbours. He has also given us news ways to develop how we nurture our faith and support each other in the Lord. Thanks for being part of these new ways. THE COLLECT FOR 18TH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us your gift of faith; that, forsaking what lies behind and reaching out to that which is before, we may run the way of your commandments and win the crown of everlasting joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. http://www.stgeorges.org.sg https://www.facebook.com/stgeorgeschurchsingapore 1

Jesus gives new life! This week in Sunday School we are continuing our series on “Jesus has the power”. We will be studying Luke 8: 40 – 56. This passage shows Jesus has the power over death as he raises Jairus’ daughter. Jairus was a ruler of the Synagogue, who came to Jesus asking him to intervene and stop his only daughter from dying. It took courage for him to approach Jesus. Jairus was well known as a community leader and Jesus was clearly regarded by other religious leaders of the time as a controversial figure. Jairus’ approach to Jesus shows both his desperation and that he clearly loved his daughter more than his career and reputation. Jesus is always the one we should turn to in our times of desperation. 2

Jesus unhesitatingly responds to Jairus’ request but is interrupted by the hemorrhaging woman. He hasn’t moved on before word comes that Jairus’ daughter has died. Jesus response is to ask Jairus “to have faith” as his daughter will get well. In this worst of situations Jairus seems to respond with faith entrusting his daughter to Jesus. Jesus describes the little girl’s condition as “sleeping” – which the professional mourners found laughable. Jesus risked defilement by taking the little girl’s hand – something a Rabbi would not do to an unrelated female – and spoke to her tenderly in Aramaic, showing his great compassion. The little girl got right up and started walking. There was no need for convalescence, it was a full restoration of life and health. Jesus power and authority are complete. This passage shows Jesus’ power over death and prepares us for the climax of Jesus mission – that he will lay down his life at the crucifixion for us, and take it back up again in his resurrection, so that we might have New life. Narelle Hadfield 11th October 2020 3

1 Corinthians 7:8-16 8 Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do. 9 But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion. 10 To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife. 12 To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13 And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy. 15 But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the sister is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace. 16 How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife? 4

Be Spiritually renewed and refreshed 1) Join a Life Group Life Groups are small groups which meet in homes or at church or on Zoom (or a mixture of in person and virtual) where we meet together, study God's Word the Bible together, pray and care for each other and Do Life Together (hence the name Life Group) Contact Marc to join a group [email protected] Marc will help you find a Life Group for you on a day and time that suits you. 8

2) Be a person who gives sacrificially A follower of Jesus is someone who is generous with their money to causes that advance the kingdom of God. The Old Testament encouraged tithing, giving 10% of income to the Lord. The New Testament encourages us to go beyond and give sacrificially as God gave sacrificially his son and Jesus sacrificially gave his life. St George's appreciates people giving in 3 ways: (go to https://www.stgeorges.org.sg/how-do-i-give a) Setting up regular payments through a standing instruction to your bank, b) Mobile banking app or Paynow/Paylah (see at the bottom of this message) c) Giving regularly through retiring offerings after each Church Service. 9

A Farewell Note to St. George's Church Composed 4 October 2020 Warm Greetings in Christ, dear people of St. George's Church! It has been my joy and privilege to have served with our parish for 6 years since 1 October 2014. Rev. Mark Dickens was Vicar then. I was asked by Bishop Rennis Ponniah, who has just retired, to assist him as priest. It was arranged as an agreement between my Mission, The Joshua Mission, and St. George's Church. My role was to work with him, and cover for him, when he had multiple engagements. This included celebrating, preaching, or officiating on Sunday communions & services, baptisms, weddings, funerals, home blessings, birthdays, and like pastoral duties. May the Lord continue to bless every family and every person who received from Him through these ministries, not just those I did, but all at St. George's. 25

The time for my farewell has come because of the growth of my Mission. When I joined St. George's, my Mission had 6 countries in its preaching and teaching network. It now has 18. Therefore, my load as Founder & International President, to teach, develop teaching materials, organise and administrate has grown. Also, over these years, more clergy and staff have been engaged at St. George's. Hence it is timely for me to focus more on my Mission. My attachment ends on 31 October 2020. But I am based in Singapore, and you are very welcomed to receive the preaching & teaching that is offered through my Mission, and to participate. Please do visit the Mission website www.thejoshuamission.net for messages & information, and to give, as the Lord may lead. By the way, the Mission is not named after me. Both the Mission and myself are named after the “Joshua” of the Bible. Thank you very much to you, the parish, to Rev. Ian Hadfield, the PCC, and the leaders, for all your prayers, fellowship, and funds to my Mission. I am sure there will be future opportunities to work with St. George's. May the Lord's blessing abide upon us all to worship and serve Him fruitfully for His glory. Revd. Dr. Soh Guan Chin (Joshua YJ Su) 26

NOTICE ON CHANGE OF USE FOR TES FUNDS Dear Donors, If you have previously donated to the PMF-ST GEORGE’S CHURCH account to support the restoration of St George’s Church, and received a tax deduction on your donation, please note that the scheme now allows collected donations to be used for: 1. Restoration of non-protected but historical structures within our Monument’s compound; 2. Works that are required for compliance with statutory regulations; and, 3. Payment of Lease and TOL renewals. This is in addition to the original approved use, which was to support the restoration of the monument building. The Parochial Church Council has recommended, and Church Members have approved at the recent AGM that up to S$160,000 of funds in the PMF- ST GEORGE’S CHURCH account be used for Payment of Lease and TOL renewals. Should you have any concerns or objections to your donation being used for these new purposes, please contact Annette Ho (email: [email protected]), with your official tax exemption receipt as issued by NHB, by no later than 31st October 2020. Note: After 1st November 2020, it shall be taken that donors have no objections to the additional proposed uses, and donations will be channeled to fund these, where applicable. 27
