Sunday 16th August 2020 ST GEORGE’S CHURCH Every person complete in Christ - Colossians 1: 28 WELCOME BACK to St George’s church! Finally, after many months of meeting Online we are now able to meet together, in person. Thank the Lord and rejoice with us. You will notice that Church has changed in many ways, but the Lord remains the same and so does our mission of presenting everyone complete in Christ. God has given us new ways of sharing Christ with our world, our city and our neighbours. He has also given us news ways to develop how we nurture our faith and support each other in the Lord. Thanks for being part of these new ways. THE COLLECT FOR 10TH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Almighty Father, whose Son Jesus Christ has taught us that what we do for the least of our brethren we do also for him; give us the will to be the servant of others as he was the servant of all, who gave up his life and died for us, but is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN. http://www.stgeorges.org.sg https://www.facebook.com/stgeorgeschurchsingapore 1
Dear Church, Greetings in Jesus' Name! It is my joy to share with you a word from today's Scripture; John 2:13-25 This passage shows Jesus at the Temple at the celebration of the Passover, the first big festival of the new year for the Jews. It recalls the Exodus from Egypt when God led Pharaoh to release Israel after the death of the firstborn in Egypt. Jesus overturned the tables and chairs of the money changers and those who sold cattle, sheep, and doves for the temple sacrifices. He declared that they had turned His Father's house into a market. In so doing, He was very directly exercised His authority as the Messiah, the Son of God, in His Father's house, the Temple. He declared this by action, rather than by words. 2
Not surprisingly, Jesus met the angry opposition from high priest and temple officials who saw themselves as the authority over the Temple. Jesus' action challenged their positions and accused them of theft and unscrupulous financial management. The fact that He was not immediately arrested was by the providence of the Father. He gave Jesus time to complete His earthly ministry. So, in spite of the fierce opposition, Jesus was free to continue His mission. This shows us that when we act in obedience to the will of the Father, our God provides for us the means to complete His call. We need to trust in Him who is sovereign over all things. Yet this does not mean we have immunity from attacks or opposition. For part of our discipleship is the willingness to suffer for righteousness sake. The heart of this lesson is that when we walk and serve in obedience our Lord will surely enable us to fulfill what He has sent us out to do in His Name; irrespective of how hostile a reception we may face in this world. Yet, as Jesus later went to the cross to fulfill God's will for Him to save us, so likewise, we need to be prepared to pay whatever cost the Lord may want us to pay, in order to fulfill His call for us. Unlike Jesus, we do not have authority ourselves. Rather, our call, unction, and authority, comes from Him. We receive all these when we act in obedience to Him. He is our Protection. He is our Lord. He is more than able to supply all we need to fulfill His purpose. 3
Jesus spoke of His destroying the Temple and He will raise it in 3 days. John makes it clear to us that the authorities did not understand Jesus at all. They thought He would destroy the building and rebuild it in 3 days. But Jesus was pointing prophetically to His crucifixion. He would be put to death by them and will resurrect after 3 days. So, even at that point of time, Jesus knew what He had to face to fulfill the Father's will. He did not shrink from it but moved forward resolutely to meet it. He has, thus, set an example for us that we should always move forward in obedience to face whatever awaits us, for the sake of fulfilling God's will. We look to His strength, guidance, and provision, which is always more than sufficient for the obedient. Let us take to heart these truths and live by them by our Lord's enabling. Blessings in Christ, Rev Dr Soh Guan Chin 16th Aug 2020 4
