Sunday 25th October 2020 ST GEORGE’S CHURCH Every person complete in Christ - Colossians 1: 28 WELCOME BACK to St George’s church! Finally, after many months of meeting Online we are now able to meet together, in person. Thank the Lord and rejoice with us. You will notice that Church has changed in many ways, but the Lord remains the same and so does our mission of presenting everyone complete in Christ. God has given us new ways of sharing Christ with our world, our city, and our neighbours. He has also given us news ways to develop how we nurture our faith and support each other in the Lord. Thanks for being part of these new ways. THE COLLECT FOR LAST SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Merciful God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as pass man’s understanding. Pour into our hearts such love towards you that we, loving you above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire, through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. http://www.stgeorges.org.sg https://www.facebook.com/stgeorgeschurchsingapore 1

SINGLENESS “Why aren’t you married?”, “Why are you still single?”, “When are you going to marry?” …. These are some of the questions people ask someone who is not married. Sometimes these questions are annoying for singles. Let us see what Paul says about singleness in 1 Cor 7:24-40 today. The church of Corinth wrote a letter to Paul and asked, “Should unmarried people and widows remain unmarried?” The apostle himself, possibly a lifelong single, answered and describes both the struggles and gifts of being single. Paul’s opinion and advice are very practical and still applies to us today. Paul said, it is good for them to stay unmarried as he is (1 Cor 7:7). But if they cannot control themselves, it is better to marry than to burn with passion (1 Cor 7:8-9) which may be one of the struggles of an unmarried person. In other words, unmarried and widows have a choice. They are free to decide – to get married or to stay single…and by staying single, they are not sinning. A married person, however, must be prepared for challenges in their relationship with their spouse (28b). 2

On one occasion, Jesus’ disciples asked similar questions about staying single. His disciples said that if this is the case for those who are married, it is better not to marry. But Jesus said, it depends on a person’s calling. - “Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others—and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.” (Matthew 19:10-11) An unmarried person can give his/her full attention to the Lord’s affairs on how they can please God. Their focus is the relationship with God. This is a gift of being single. Are you single? How are you using your gift? On the other hand, it may be easy to think that singles are worry free. But not all singles have that same strength as Paul, others are vulnerable and lonely, and maybe carrying a heavy load about which we do not know. How can we as believers help our brothers and sisters in their struggles? We are all created for relationships. You may be single, but in a relationship with God! If the Lord has called you to be single for life just like Paul, you are blessed for that purpose. Whatever is our status in life at present, whether widow or single, we have a choice to stay unmarried or to marry. But do choose to stay in a close relationship with God. One day we will all be married…….to the lamb (that is Christ), because we are his bride. (Revelation 19:7-9) Hydie Valdez 25th October 2020 3

1 Corinthians 7:24-40 24 Brothers and sisters, each person, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation they were in when God called them. 25 Now about virgins: I have no command from the Lord, but I give a judgment as one who by the Lord’s mercy is trustworthy. 26 Because of the present crisis, I think that it is good for a man to remain as he is. 27 Are you pledged to a woman? Do not seek to be released. Are you free from such a commitment? Do not look for a wife. 28 But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this. 29 What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not; 30 those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; 31 those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away. 32 I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs—how he can please the Lord. 33 But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife— 4

34 and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband. 35 I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord. 36 If anyone is worried that he might not be acting honorably toward the virgin he is engaged to, and if his passions are too strong[a] and he feels he ought to marry, he should do as he wants. He is not sinning. They should get married. 37 But the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his mind not to marry the virgin—this man also does the right thing. 38 So then, he who marries the virgin does right, but he who does not marry her does better. 39 A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord. 40 In my judgment, she is happier if she stays as she is—and I think that I too have the Spirit of God. 5

Be Spiritually renewed and refreshed 1) Join a Life Group Life Groups are small groups which meet in homes or at church or on Zoom (or a mixture of in person and virtual) where we meet together, study God's Word the Bible together, pray and care for each other and Do Life Together (hence the name Life Group) Contact Marc to join a group marcwang@stgeorges.org.sg Marc will help you find a Life Group for you on a day and time that suits you. 12

2) Be a person who gives sacrificially A follower of Jesus is someone who is generous with their money to causes that advance the kingdom of God. The Old Testament encouraged tithing, giving 10% of income to the Lord. The New Testament encourages us to go beyond and give sacrificially as God gave sacrificially his son and Jesus sacrificially gave his life. St George's appreciates people giving in 3 ways: (go to https://www.stgeorges.org.sg/how-do-i-give a) Setting up regular payments through a standing instruction to your bank, b) Mobile banking app or Paynow/Paylah (see at the bottom of this message) c) Giving regularly through retiring offerings after each Church Service. 3) Be a person who serves A follower of Jesus is someone who will serve, serve in church, serve in the community. Here is a link to enable you to sign up: https://tinyurl.com/sgcMinistry-Involvement-Nov20 There is training provided by us too. 13

4) Be a person who shares about Jesus The good news about Jesus and being loved and forgiven by God, is such good news that a follower of Jesus will want to share this news with others. Who are you sharing your faith with? Are you praying for others that you will share Jesus with them? Are you ready to tell your story about how God has been at work in you? You don't need to be an expert to share your faith. You can show them in actions how much God loves them. And you can also invite people to Church or activities. Think about sharing Jesus and inviting people could happen over Christmas. And next year when St George's runs ALPHA and Christianity Explored. A Farewell Note from Rev Dr Soh Guan Chin to St. George's Church Composed 4 October 2020 Warm Greetings in Christ, dear people of St. George's Church! It has been my joy and privilege to have served with our parish for 6 years since 1 October 2014. Rev. Mark Dickens was Vicar then. I was asked by Bishop Rennis Ponniah, who has just retired, to assist him as priest. It was arranged as an agreement between my Mission, The Joshua Mission, and St. George's Church. My role was to work with him, and cover for him, when he had multiple engagements. This included celebrating, preaching, or officiating on Sunday communions & services, baptisms, weddings, funerals, home blessings, birthdays, and like pastoral duties. May the Lord continue to bless every family and every person who received from Him through these ministries, not just those I did, but all at St. George's. 20

The time for my farewell has come because of the growth of my Mission. When I joined St. George's, my Mission had 6 countries in its preaching and teaching network. It now has 18. Therefore, my load as Founder & International President, to teach, develop teaching materials, organise and administrate has grown. Also, over these years, more clergy and staff have been engaged at St. George's. Hence it is timely for me to focus more on my Mission. My attachment ends on 31 October 2020. But I am based in Singapore, and you are very welcomed to receive the preaching & teaching that is offered through my Mission, and to participate. Please do visit the Mission website www.thejoshuamission.net for messages & information, and to give, as the Lord may lead. By the way, the Mission is not named after me. Both the Mission and myself are named after the “Joshua” of the Bible. Thank you very much to you, the parish, to Rev. Ian Hadfield, the PCC, and the leaders, for all your prayers, fellowship, and funds to my Mission. I am sure there will be future opportunities to work with St. George's. May the Lord's blessing abide upon us all to worship and serve Him fruitfully for His glory. Revd. Dr. Soh Guan Chin (Joshua YJ Su) 21

A FINANCIAL GIFT TO SAY \"THANK YOU” to Rev. Dr Soh Guan Chin If you would like to say \"Thank You\" to Rev. Soh in a financial way in order to support The Joshua Mission, then please give through an envelope by cash or cheque marked \"Gift Rev. Soh\" or put that description in the details field in your electronic transfer. Please do so by the 2nd November. 22

Alex is an itinerant speaker for RZIM. He grew up in Brisbane, Australia, and spent most of his time playing sports with friends. When he was fifteen, he heard the Christian story in a way that unlocked his imagination, forcing him to ask deep questions about life to which the person of Jesus was the answer. After graduating from high school, Alex went on to study theology in Brisbane and Oxford, showing particular interest in the writing of Christian ethicists and gender theory. Alex speaks in churches and universities, at conferences, and in the corporate world. He particularly loves helping young people navigate their questions, having worked with them for just under a decade. Alex has led outreach teams in local parish missions, as well as volunteer chaplains at music festivals and school-leaver celebrations in Australia. In all of this, he has been continually reminded that the Christian story isn’t just true news but also good news, and he is committed to helping people explore the truth and beauty of God’s good story. Alex lives in Sydney, Australia, with his wife, Kath, and spends his time speaking with people who have questions about the Christian faith. 29
