Sunday 4th October 2020 ST GEORGE’S CHURCH Every person complete in Christ - Colossians 1: 28 WELCOME BACK to St George’s church! Finally, after many months of meeting Online we are now able to meet together, in person. Thank the Lord and rejoice with us. You will notice that Church has changed in many ways, but the Lord remains the same and so does our mission of presenting everyone complete in Christ. God has given us new ways of sharing Christ with our world, our city and our neighbours. He has also given us news ways to develop how we nurture our faith and support each other in the Lord. Thanks for being part of these new ways. THE COLLECT FOR 17TH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Almighty God, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you. Teach us to offer ourselves to your service, that here we may have your peace, and in the world to come may see you face to face, through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. http://www.stgeorges.org.sg https://www.facebook.com/stgeorgeschurchsingapore 1
1 Corinthians 7 1-6 Dear Church, Greetings in Jesus' Name! We begin this series, as set by our Vicar, on Marriage, based on 1 Corinthians 7. In this chapter, Paul dealt with many situational issues that confronted the church in Corinth. This included much sexual immorality and temptations, divorce, being married to an unbeliever, and whether it maybe better to be single. I believe the best way to start is to anchor this situational passage on the Scriptures that give us God's design of marriage. I will draw from an OT, and an NT, passage. Consider Genesis 2:18-25. God said that it was not good for man to be alone so He will make a partner suitable for him. 2
Therefore, marriage is God's design for humankind; not a human idea or initiative. When God present Eve to Adam he exclaimed that she was his own bone and flesh. He recognized that she was human like him. But they were different from all the other lifeforms God created. Husband and wife were naked but not ashamed. They knew each other as they were, with no cover up, pretense, or camouflage. Such was the nature of their union. Ephesians 5:21-33 teaches that the union of husband and wife is modeled after Christ and the Church as His bride. A husband is to love his wife self-sacrificially for her well-being, like Christ does of us as His Church. A wife is to love her husband as the Church is to love Christ, in willing submission to respect him. There is no self-seeking or domination, but self-giving for the benefit of the others. With these biblical anchors, we are in a strong position to understand Paul's counsel in 1Corinthians 7. Let us take to heart these truths and live by them by our Lord's enabling. Blessings in Christ, Revd. Dr. Soh Guan Chin, Joshua 4th October 2020 3
1 Corinthians 7:1-9 Concerning Married Life 1 Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” 2 But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. 3 The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. 5 Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 6 I say this as a concession, not as a command. 7 I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that. 8 Now to the unmarried[a] and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do. 9 But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion. 4

Restoration of non-protected but historical structures within our Monument’s compound. 2. Works that are required for compliance with statutory regulations; and, 3. Payment of Lease and TOL renewals. This is in addition to the original approved use, which was to support the restoration of the monument building.
