Sunday 6th September 2020 ST GEORGE’S CHURCH Every person complete in Christ - Colossians 1: 28 WELCOME BACK to St George’s church! Finally, after many months of meeting Online we are now able to meet together, in person. Thank the Lord and rejoice with us. You will notice that Church has changed in many ways, but the Lord remains the same and so does our mission of presenting everyone complete in Christ. God has given us new ways of sharing Christ with our world, our city and our neighbours. He has also given us news ways to develop how we nurture our faith and support each other in the Lord. Thanks for being part of these new ways. THE COLLECT FOR 13TH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Lord God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: increase and multiply upon us your mercy, that you being our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal that we finally lose not the things eternal. Grant this, heavenly Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. http://www.stgeorges.org.sg https://www.facebook.com/stgeorgeschurchsingapore 1

This week Zoom Sunday School is starting a new series on Jesus has the power. Sunday School’s very first passage is in line with our sermon series in Church. We will all be looking at John 5 and seeing that Jesus has the power to heal. Jesus was in Jerusalem again and he visits the Pool of Bethesda / Bethzatha / Bethsaida, where tradition has it that if the water bubbled an angel had done it and the 1st person in will be healed. So obviously the pool was surrounded by lots of desperate people. Jesus’ attention focuses in on a man who has been crippled for 38 years. When Jesus askes the man if he wants to be healed, his answer; “I have no one to help me,” is an acknowledgement of the man’s helplessness. This is a great reminder that for all of us that we are 2

all in need of help when it comes to our salvation. We all need Jesus. When Jesus commands the man to get up and pick up his mat, the man responds in obedience and is healed. The response of the Jewish leaders is so sad. They are more concerned about him carrying his mat on the Sabbath than rejoicing in his healing. Jesus had shown his compassion and demonstrated his God given authority over sickness, but the religious leaders failed to recognise the healing came from God. When Jesus met up with the man later in the temple, telling him not to sin reminds the man that he is to walk in the new life that Jesus has given him. Jesus has shown God’s power in healing the man, but also God’s authority to forgive sins and that he is Lord of the Sabbath to do God’s work. Narelle Hadfield 6th Sept 2020 3

John 5: 1-18 5 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” 7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” 8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, 10 and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.” 11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ” 12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?” 4

13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. 5

PRAYERS PRAISE GOD FOR WHO HE IS • Thank God for steadfast love that never ceases and is new every morning. THE WORLD • Pray for Morocco (Africa). Praise the Lord for this small but emerging church. It is estimated that there are only about 2000 believers in the nation of 36 million. It is legal to talk about Christ and to religious discussions at home but generally this legal ‘freedom’ is not upheld. Pray for this persecuted church and pray for the nation to become open to hearing about Christ. • Pray for the persecuted church that our sisters and brothers will remain strong in the faith. Pray that their steadfastness will bear witness to Christ. • Bring before the Lord the world as it continues to struggle against COVID-19 and the economic fallout. Pray that our world will recognise God’s challenge to turn to him. SINGAPORE • Pray for wisdom for the government as it continues to determine when and how to lift COVID-19 restrictions. • Continue to pray for those in the dormitories; their health and ability to return to work. Pray that they would come to Christ whilst in Singapore. Thank God for opportunities to share with them during circuit breaker and phases 1 and 2. • Bring before the Lord those who work in the banking sector. Pray for banks to be wise and gracious in how they deal customers and business and governments. 7

ST GEORGE’S • Pray that St George’s would be a community which accepts all who join and continue to support each other whether we are single or married. Pray that those who are single that they will not be made to feel ‘second class’ because they are not married. • Thank the Lord for Hydie and her work with Toddler Time and Filipino Fellowship. Thank God for opportunities to she has to share Christ and to encourage those who are already Christians. Pray that all of us at St George’s will be a help to the ministry to Helpers as well as showing Christ to all whom we employ. • (Pray for a St George’s Mission Partner) Young Life - Kaithlin Chaffin: For staff returning from the US. For ministry adjusting to small meetings vs. large group gatherings, fundraising efforts, and new ministries that are gaining traction- Specifically with local schools & universities!! • Pray for the sick Joanna, Rosemary, Peter, Kah Seng, Caitlin and Tee Dhye. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. John 5:23b 8

ANNOUNCEMENTS Special Parochial Church Meeting 15th September 2020 8:00 pm at St George's Church Due to COVID-19 delays, the St George's Annual General Meeting (AGM) in June 2020, was not able to accept the completed audited Accounts for the year 2019. Draft audited accounts were only acknowledged by that AGM. The complete accounts are now available and the only difference on them is that there is a signature from the auditor. St George's Constitution requires that these accounts be accepted now by a Special Parochial Church Meeting (SPCM) held for Electoral Roll Members. Thus two things are being asked of those who are currently on the Electoral Roll: 9

(Note that at least 10% of the Electoral Roll must make a request for this meeting to occur) ii) Upon submission of the above form, you will be provided with a link to register to attend the Special Parochial Church Meeting on 15th September 2020 at 8:00 pm in the church. We need at least 20 people to attend for that is our quorum. A maximum of 50 can attend in person. If there are more people wishing to attend, they can watch (but not participate in voting) via Zoom. Note that the meeting will only last for about 10 minutes. But it is important to hold the meeting. Also, due to COVID restrictions no refreshments will be provided. 10

Adopt a Dorm Program - Update From May 2020, we at St George's have been supporting guest workers in their dormitories with physical and spiritual food. The program is now ending but we want to celebrate what has been done in the name of Jesus and out of his love. We praise God for the opportunities to share food and Christ with these men who have faced difficulties, shortages and isolation during the Circuit Breaker period of COVID-19 and only now are allowed back to work. It has been a magnificent effort sharing the love of God and so thank you to everyone for your prayers and donations towards this local mission cause. You have brought honour to God. We are particularly grateful to Shiva (a Christian) who has been the contact person in the dormitories and to Fileo, Larry, Nishka, Rebekah and Annette (all from St George's) for their hard work in making this possible. And we pray that God will continue to do his good work in these men and their families due to the love and generosity that we have been able to share with them. 14
