Sunday 23rd August 2020 ST GEORGE’S CHURCH Every person complete in Christ - Colossians 1: 28 WELCOME BACK to St George’s church! Finally, after many months of meeting Online we are now able to meet together, in person. Thank the Lord and rejoice with us. You will notice that Church has changed in many ways, but the Lord remains the same and so does our mission of presenting everyone complete in Christ. God has given us new ways of sharing Christ with our world, our city and our neighbours. He has also given us news ways to develop how we nurture our faith and support each other in the Lord. Thanks for being part of these new ways. THE COLLECT FOR 11TH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Almighty God, who called your Church to witness that you were in Christ reconciling men to yourself: help us so to proclaim the good news of your love, that all who hear it may be reconciled to you; through him who died for us and rose again and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN. http://www.stgeorges.org.sg https://www.facebook.com/stgeorgeschurchsingapore 1

In our passage today we will learn about another eyewitness of Jesus named Nicodemus. Nicodemus is a person of high position. He is a Pharisee and a member of a ruling council and a teacher. He came to Jesus at night because he heard something interesting about him, something extraordinary! The passage does not say why he came at night. Perhaps he was too busy during the day at work. Or maybe he felt shy that others may see him with Jesus. But he was eager to know more about Jesus. Let us find out. In their conversation, Jesus told him many important things that Nicodemus needed to know but Nicodemus was not able understand. Jesus then explained everything to him. If you already know Jesus, make every opportunity to make him known. If you are like Nicodemus who wants to know more about Jesus, you are very welcome to come and ask questions! 2

Your desire to know more may be different to Nicodemus' conversation with Jesus. He went to Jesus face to face. If those days were in our time now, he could use zoom, skype, or messenger call with Jesus. Jesus is not physically with us today, but his Spirit is with us and he speaks to us in the Bible, that is always available. Also there are Christians you can ask as well as Life groups to join to ask questions there. We can come to Jesus not just at night, but all the time! Let us pray that we may understand his message to us today. Jeremiah 33:3 says, \"Call to me and I will answer you, and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.\" Hydie Valdez 23rd Aug 2020 3

John 3: 1-21 3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” 3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” 4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” 5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” 9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. 10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept 4

our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. 5

PRAYERS PRAISE GOD FOR WHO HE IS • Thank God for his love for the world that he sent his son to bring salvation and not judgement. Thank God for the verse John 3:16. THE WORLD • Pray for Maldives (Asia). The Maldives is a beautiful location, but its people are one of the least evangelised nations on earth. The government denies the existence of Christianity among Maldivians while arresting those who do believe. Pray for the true name and nature of Jesus to be made known in this nation. • Ask for the Lord to be active for peace and stability in Lebanon as it continues to struggle with many issues; the explosion, the government resigning, inflation, COVID-19, corruption and situated between many antagonistic countries. Pray for the Christians there. • Bring before the Lord the Eastern Orthodox Churches (Greek, Coptic, Russian, Syrian, Ethiopian etc). Pray for boldness to proclaim Christ and faithfulness to follow him. SINGAPORE • Thank God that the number of cases of COVID-19 is reducing. Continue to pray for all who are unwell with the virus. Continue to pray for the guest workers where infection is high. • Pray for the retail sector in Singapore. Thank God for those who work there and especially pray for Christians in this area in how to be godly in dealing with customers, staff, and bosses. 7

• Pray for Bishop Rennis as he finishes his time as Bishop this month. Pray as he says goodbye to people that he would speak words that God would use for encouragement and challenge. ST GEORGE’S • Pray that as a church soon we might be able to meet together as 100/Service. • Pray that we would prayerfully and carefully consider our financial giving to St George’s and our mission partners. Thank God for our current levels but we are still behind our income budget. • Thank the Lord for Lesley who works with us in rostering Services and the Website. Pray for her and her husband Chris and their daughter and son. • (Pray for a St George’s Mission Partner) OMF – Brian and Laureen Powell Anwyn and Ruth: Laureen is still awaiting a visa to the UK whilst Brian and the girls have left for England to start the girls’ schooling. Pray that Laureen’s visa will arrive very soon. • Pray for the sick Rosemary, Peter, Kah Seng, Caitlin and Tee Dhye. Pray that God will show his mercy and give perseverance. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:17 8
