Sunday 20th September 2020 ST GEORGE’S CHURCH Every person complete in Christ - Colossians 1: 28 WELCOME BACK to St George’s church! Finally, after many months of meeting Online we are now able to meet together, in person. Thank the Lord and rejoice with us. You will notice that Church has changed in many ways, but the Lord remains the same and so does our mission of presenting everyone complete in Christ. God has given us new ways of sharing Christ with our world, our city and our neighbours. He has also given us news ways to develop how we nurture our faith and support each other in the Lord. Thanks for being part of these new ways. THE COLLECT FOR 15TH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Almighty God, you have taught us through your Son that love is the fulfilling of the law. Grant that we may love you with our whole heart and our neighbours as ourselves, through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. http://www.stgeorges.org.sg https://www.facebook.com/stgeorgeschurchsingapore 1

John’s Gospel 1-6 John 6:1-24 When stories about events become routine, we can often become too blasé, too relaxed, too ‘I-have-heard-this-all-before’, matter of fact about them and thus we don’t listen carefully to them. The feeding of the 5000 men is just such an event. The story is very often in the curriculum for Sunday school lessons (and in fact St George’s church is studying this miracle this week at Sunday School) And this week, we adults are examining the story too in church and in our Life Groups. Not only is the miracle of feeding 5000 men included in sermon series and in Sunday School but it also included in all 4 of the Gospels. The feeding of the 5000 men is in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The only other miracle in all four Gospels is the resurrection of Jesus – that is how important this miracle of much bread and fish is, in the list of miracles of Jesus. 2

Especially considering that in the Gospel of John, written later than the other 3 Gospels, John normally only tells us about other miracles that are not included in the other three Gospels. But the feeding of 5000 men is included. Why not discuss amongst one another over your lunch or dinner time today, why this miracle is such a prominent one? You will notice that I keep talking about 5000 men being feed and that is because only men were counted in the first century and Matthew’s account of the miracle (14:21) tells us that there were also women and children present too. Thus, Jesus is feeding maybe up to 20,000 people, all from 5 loaves and 2 fish. That is one big meal, that is one huge miracle, that is one powerful person – Jesus, that is the sort of miracle that you would expect God to be doing if he was walking on earth. Jesus is a person who is greater than Moses or any other biblical, or other factual heron or even a greater superhero from our imagination. Jesus is one very powerful person. Truly, he is none other than the Son of God. Take a closer look at the miracle of the feeding of 5000 men and note how amazing Jesus is. Ian Hadfield 20th Sept 2020 3

John 6: 1-24 1 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near. 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. 12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 4

13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. 14 After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself. Jesus Walks on the Water 16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing, and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, [b] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading. 22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. 23 Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus. 5

Adopt a Dorm Program - Update From May 2020, we at St George's have been supporting guest workers in their dormitories with physical and spiritual food. The program is now ending but we want to celebrate what has been done in the name of Jesus and out of his love. We praise God for the opportunities to share food and Christ with these men who have faced difficulties, shortages and isolation during the Circuit Breaker period of COVID-19 and only now are allowed back to work. It has been a magnificent effort sharing the love of God and so thank you to everyone for your prayers and donations towards this local mission cause. You have brought honour to God. We are particularly grateful to Shiva (a Christian) who has been the contact person in the dormitories and to Fileo, Larry, Nishka, Rebekah and Annette (all from St George's) for their hard work in making this possible. And we pray that God will continue to do his good work in these men and their families due to the love and generosity that we have been able to share with them. 12
