Message from the Director Students’ success is our aim, so we are proud to share the many ways we have lived our school’s mission and vision this year. DeBakey’s SY 2016-2017 Annual Report describes our progress on the eight goals outlined in our 2013- 2018 Strategic Plan. In this report you will find an overview of the activities, accomplishments and critical milestones we have crossed toward meeting the goals that define our school’s purpose and direction. We present this report as a reflection of the tremendous work we have done together as faculty, parents, students and members of the community.That said, we know that we can never be complacent. We are committed tocontinuously aiming higher, reaching farther and doing more to support ourstudents’ success.Looking back at the year we have just completed, I feel confident that wehave laid a strong foundation to build upon our achievements, and successfullytackle opportunities for improvement in the year ahead. Class of 2017On May 19, 2017, 36 students graduated who had committed to and succeeded in studyingin one of the most challenging schools in the region. Dr. Omar Zaghmout, Associate Directorof Medical Education at Hamad Medical Hospital and a member of the DeBakey at QatarAdvisory Board motivated the graduates with his inspiring speech and also shared hisexperience in the field of medicine.Of the class of 2017’s 36 students, 13 students graduated with honors. Students who had participatedin DeBakey’s six weeks Hamad Hospital rotations internship were recognized with a certificate ofcompletion presented by Dr.Omar Zaghmout, Associate Director of Medical Education at HamadMedical Hospital.4 DeBakey High School for Health Professions at Qatar – Annual Report 2016 - 2017

STRATEGIC GOALS & PROGRESSGoal 1: Deliver a rigorous, college preparatory curriculum focused on science,mathematics, technology, engineering and the health professions. Facilitating Authentic Learning Within and Beyond the ClassroomDeBakey High School- Qatar prides itself on its rigorous curriculum and its delivery methods.DeBakey’s curriculum standard, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), ensures that allstudents have equitable and challenging learning experiences that prepare students andprovide them with sufficient opportunities to succeed at the next level.DeBakey students started the SY 2016-2017 with great enthusiasm and rigor through a widerange of authentic and critical thinking learning experiences both in and outside the school.Students had field trips and orientations in line within their curriculum and aspirations.High school students had the opportunity to build foundational knowledge of currentmedical tools and practices. Students also had a chance to explore their interests in a rangeof medical professions during the six-week internship consisting of hospital rotations andphysician shadowing.DeBakey was also pleased to build upon a partnership with the University of Calgary in Qatarto bring nursing students to DeBakey to lead educational presentations on health. As a partof their annual internship program, University of Calgary students shared their skills andknowledge with our grade 7 & 8 Health students. DeBakey students had hands-on collaboration with Weill Cornell University and Sidra MedicalCenter which provided them with authentic learning experiences in the fields of science andhealth.Senior students were certified in Hamad Hospital Rotations Observership Program, wherethey explored the various departments at Hamad Hospitals in order to make an informeddecision about their future medical careers.DeBakey students competed in the World Scholar’s Cup, Doha and won opportunities tocompete in the global competition. Goal 2: Ensure consistent delivery of high quality instruction Recruiting & Retaining Highly Qualified StaffThe vision, mission and purpose are also reflected through the dedication of DeBakeyteachers as well as the quality of teaching. From the very beginning, highly qualifiedteachers are employed through an extensive hiring process and serious consideration isgiven to match their experience with the job role expected. Evaluation and staff appraisalsare held regularly, which provide valuable feedback to both administration and staff onachievement of the school objectives and offers a chance for improvement anddevelopment. The school utilized Search Associates, an international recruitment agency forSY 2016-2017.Teachers are regularly rewarded for their commitment to teaching through certificates andbonuses linked to the evaluation outcome. DeBakey continued the tradition of “TeacherAppreciation Week” during the SY 2016-2017 to honor the efforts and hard work of ourdedicated faculty. Providing On-going Professional Development and Teacher SupportDuring the School Year 2016-2017, teachers were given a comprehensive and intensiveinduction program at the beginning of school year. It ensured that all staff members areequipped with the necessary resources to effectively begin the new school year. Theprofessional development that the staff participates in is followed up through tools thatenable teachers to implement and reflect on what was provided throughout theprofessional development.DeBakey High School Faculty attended the iEARN Professional Development workshopconducted by ROTA in association with Qatar Foundation on November 10, 2016. iEARNempowers teachers and young people to work together online using the internet and othernew communication technologies. Out of 66 projects with the iEARN Qatar, our school wonfirst place in the category of distinguished projects for Secondary Level for Digital Citizenship.8 DeBakey High School for Health Professions at Qatar – Annual Report 2016 - 2017

Teaching Methods & PedagogyDeBakey is committed to utilizing and applying various teaching strategies to ensure aneffective learning process. Various differentiated instruction and learning methods arecontinuously implemented to ensure an equitable learning process for all students. Teachersutilized various 21st Century teaching methods to ensure that higher order thinking skills aredeveloped for each student.Differentiated instruction is key at DeBakey as we strive to meet and enable each student toreach his/her potential. Teachers differentiate within each class by utilizing techniques thatmeet the students’ needs, while still challenging them. Goal 3: Improve the academic achievement of all students Assessing for LearningOur external assessments include NWEA MAP and Stanford 10. DeBakey has opted to useNWEA MAP data aligned to the TEKS, and as such, our faculty are able to identify studentperformance and curriculum gaps against our own curriculum’s standards. This alignmenthas allowed DeBakey faculty to reach valid inferences regarding student status with respectto the curricular objectives we regard as high-priority instructional targets.Through strong procedures and oversight, the school leadership works to ensure that internalassessments meet equally high standards of validity, reliability and lack of bias. Our externalassessments allow DeBakey to garner valuable information to adapt instruction and to gaininsight into the performance of DeBakey students in comparison to their contemporaries atother institutions in the United States and across the world. In Math, DeBakeystudents were at the norm in grade 7 and above the norm for each subsequent grade level. Using Data to Adapt Instruction to Students’ Unique Learning NeedsTo ensure that all faculty are effectively using student assessment data to reflect theirteaching practice, staff participated in professional development focused on data-driveninstruction. The training received lays the foundation of our teachers to provide enhancedguidance and support to teaching faculty in adapting instruction to student’s uniquelearning needs.SY 2016-2017, grade level team meetings were initiated wherein teachers met to discussstudent performance across grade level, results of standardized tests and to align theirteaching methods to our students needs. Providing Students with Academic Support and RemediationDeBakey aims to set students up for success, no matter what their current level ofpreparation is. To support students in need of academic remediation, DeBakey provided ESLtutoring for students from grades 6-8. Involving students with Khan Academy gave them theoption to receive assistance based on their individual levels outside of normal school hourswhen neededAcademic support was also provided to our high achievers wherein AP instructors provideafter school support for AP students during weekdays. SY 2017-2018, DeBakey plans to offermore AP courses in Psychology, Computer Science and Literature for students of grades11 & 12 for the SY 2017-2018 DeBakey High School for Health Professions at Qatar – Annual Report 2016 – 2017 13

Goal 4: Provide students with well-rounded preparation for college and careerthrough physical, psychological, character and leadership developmentprograms and services Enriching Student Life through Extracurricular Activities and Special EventsStudents actively celebrated the Qatar National Day that included the Qatari TraditionalSword Dance, face painting, camel riding, falcon showcase and many more activities. Atthe sixth Annual International Day, DeBakey also celebrated the rich diversity of the DeBakeyschool community with the theme ‘Unity in Diversity’. Students and faculty shared theculture and traditions of their native countries through a series of activities.DeBakey offered different clubs such as debate, robotics and table tennis to name a few.Clubs functioned during after school hours allowing the students more opportunities toexplore their skills.DeBakey High School has collaborated with INJAZ, a non-governmental organization thatwas established in 2007 to work hand in hand with the business community, corporatevolunteers, and educators to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a globaleconomy.This was the first year for our students to participate in ‘INJAZ Mubadara Competition’ andthe team competed as finalists in all of Qatar. During the school year, the team underwentthe life cycle of a business where they started a company, created a product, devised abusiness plan and completed several live presentations.The school has always collaborated with organizations of higher education to enroll studentsin various programs; they assist students to think about the right path for their future. Somecompetitions include; Healing Hands Competition, Winter Program, HSMC Researchcompetition with Weill Cornell Medical College and the summer program with Texas A&M.14 DeBakey High School for Health Professions at Qatar – Annual Report 2016 - 2017

DeBakey students have experienced victories in sports events, including many wins in friendlymatches. Students participated in a friendly football match and Basketball match with theGerman School, Canadian school, Bonaparte School, Choueifat School and many more. Providing Students with Comprehensive College Readiness SupportIn addition, to our School Counselor, the Naviance school program that we have atDeBakey, helps students organize all the files needed for college admissions, and promotecareer planning and assist students choosing the right college path. We also providestudents with exposure to local and international colleges and universities by hosting collegefairs and inviting recruiters to deliver presentations to the upper grade levels. 36 seniors successfully graduated and were accepted to Universities such as Weill CornellMedical College in Qatar, Texas A&M University – Qatar, American University of Sharjah,King’s College- London, University of Ottawa – Canada, and many more.DeBakey continued with the Adult Advocate Structure that ensures each staff will mentor agroup of students. Every staff member mentored a group of five to six students during theschool year. Goal 5: Strengthen DeBakey’s leadership and policy setting structures:DeBakey leadership team under the guidance of Mrs. Linda Mabrie has providedgovernance and leadership that promoted student performance and school effectiveness.In SY 2016-2017, efforts were made to put all the necessary policies and procedures in placeto ensure the effective operation of the school.SY 2016-2017 school leadership team reviewed policies and practices regarding professionalgrowth, making every effort to formalize and consistently implement opportunities for all staffgrowth for effective day-to-day school operations and staff retention for the next academicyear. DeBakey got the candidacy and also submitted the Self-Study Report for QatarNational School Accreditation (QNSA) this year. The school is awaiting to receive the QNSAAccreditation Team next school year.DeBakey’s Advisory Board is consulted for guidance and advice concerning the school’sprogress and goal alignment with the vision and mission of the school. This school year theBoard members visited school during the school hours and had interactions with ourstudents.Board members also contributed their support by visiting the classroom during instructiontime. Each member did a formal evaluation of the instructional class based on the rubricprovided. Feedback given by the members during the debriefing session, focused on theuse of technology by teachers in the classroom. The school is working towards increasingthe use of technology during instructional time which is aligned to DeBakey’s future goals.The School Management team made a concerted effort to promote the vision, mission,purpose and values to all stakeholders throughout the school at every level. Goal 6: Improve School Infrastructure Maintaining a Safe, Secure, Functional and Effective Learning EnvironmentDeBakey High School has effective plans in place for managing all aspects of materialresources including infrastructure, purchasing, managing and distributing resources. Periodicmaintenance of facilities and buildings takes place to ensure safety, durability andoperational function of facilities.There are also well-equipped rooms for art, computer labs, a cafeteria and a gymnasium.The staged theatre installed this school year in the assembly hall is used frequently andprovides an ambience that motivates the students and ensures enjoyment for all.Use of promethean boards and tablets have improved this SY 2016-2017 which contribute tothe students ‘general creative skills and allows them to enrich their academic curriculumthrough research.18 DeBakey High School for Health Professions at Qatar – Annual Report 2016 - 2017

Goal 8: Establish positive and productive ways for parents to support andparticipate in student learning and school operationsSY 2016-2017 witnessed an increase in parent participation. Parents actively participated inQatar National Day, International Day, Sports Day, Family Fun Day and the PTA. They playeda vital role in organizing Teacher Appreciation Week.RenWeb continued to be one of our best ways of communication; it is an Internet basedschool management and student information system that embraces the various needs ofadministration, staff, teachers, parents and students. Parents are consistentlycommunicated with about student performances and also text messages are in place forimmediate communication with parents in case of emergencies.The parent-student handbook plays a vital role in communicating the school’s operatingprocedures, school rules and behavior expectations from students. Moving Forward…We have accomplished much in SY 2016-2017. As we look to the future, our sights are set oncontinuing the great progress we have made on all aspects of our current 5-Year Plan 2013-2018.Going forward, our major focus will be to maintain high standards of quality for instruction by makingsure that the right team and support structures are in place. We will also look at how we canaugment our curriculum to provide more support for English Language Learners, and to providestudents with more course offerings that reflect their interests and challenge them to think morebroadly.On the academic front, DeBakey has planned to have professional development on inquiry basedlearning and collaborative teaching, along with horizontal and vertical planning for next school year2017-2018.The Office of Student Affairs’ main objective will be to focus on using technology in more than oneavenue within its 4 different sections of Counselling, Discipline, Library & Clinic to support the school-wide goals, students’ life skills, and college admission programs. By next year, Naviance, the onlinecomprehensive K-12 College and career readiness solution, will be used by all high school students tofacilitate their self-discovery, awareness of career options and overall college readiness. StudentAffairs will grow its student offices to offer more opportunities for students to exhibit self-confidenceand self-esteem while occupying leading roles as class representatives and student ambassadors.In an effort to improve student outcomes and connect learning to life, the student mentorshipprogram and the character building program will be delivered during homeroom time on Thursdays,starting from the very beginning till the end of the year.The school clinic will migrate into a leading role in the provision of health care to meet theeducational goals which will improve the health and safety of the school environment.The library’s major objective for the upcoming year is to build an online database, and create aninterlibrary loan system with national and international universities which will enrich the libraryresources and have a positive impact on promoting reading amongst all students.Reconnecting with the seventh cohorts of the alumni that have graduated from DeBakey, andorganizing a get together like ceremony remains a focal objective of student Affairs.In the coming year, Student Affairs motto will be “Think Green” to support its major goal of the year.Clubs, school-wide events, meetings and clearance documentation will all be virtual.
