If you have the words, there’s always a chance that you’ll find the way. —Seamus Heaney I-Statements At-Home Resources Level: Lower Elementary (K-2) Concepts: • Assertive Communication • Conflict Resolution • Identifying & Expressing EmotionBig Ideas For This LessonCommunicating with others is most effective when we take responsibility for our own emotionsby using an I-Statement. I-Statements may help with conflict resolution and self-awareness bynaming what emotion we are feeling in response to a specific event.You-Statements, on the other hand, can make people feel bad and might have a negative resultin our communication. For example, a You-Statement would be: “You are mean.” An I statementallows us the space to identify and name our emotions, and to find resolution in the conversa-tion, “I feel sad when you tease me.”The I-Statement for students consists of 2 parts:a. I Feel _____ (emotion) _____b. when _____ (event) _____.
