From the traditional harams, mangalsutras and thalis to the more fashionable long earrings, chains, bracelets and rings; there is a lot to choose from Tanishq Kundan What is Kundan? One of the oldest forms of jewellery made and worn in India, is the 22K pure gold Kundan jewellery. Kundan received great patronage during the Mughal era and many a stunning pieces were created in those times. Kundan work is a method of gem setting, in which a gold foil is inserted between the stones and its mount. It is a product of well orchestrated teamwork, involves a variety of specialist skills and requires the creativity of the designer, the goldsmith, the engraver, the enameller, the gem setter and the stringer.
How is it done? The jewellery piece is first shaped by specialized craftsmen (and soldered together if the shape is complicated). Holes are cut for glass or diamond, emeralds or rubies, any engraving or chasing is carried out, and the pieces are enamelled. When the stones are to be set, lac is inserted in the back, and is then visible in the front through the holes. Highly refined gold is then used to cover the lac and the stone is pushed into the Kundan (gold). More kundan is applied around the edges to strengthen the setting and give it a neat appearance. This was the only form of setting for stones in gold until claw settings were introduced under the influence of western jewellery in the nineteenth century. Often Kundan work is combined with enameling, so that a piece of jewellery has two equally beautiful surfaces, enamel at the back end and Kundan set gems in the front.
Polki What is Open Polki? As the name suggests, this kind of Kundan uses uncut diamonds and precious and semi precious stones. These stones have an open setting and are not covered with gold at the back. This is done so that the uncut diamonds reflect more light and sparkle.

Platinum Nothing can describe platinum better than Pure, Rare and Eternal Pure : Platinum’s purity endows it with a brilliant white lustre. This helps to reflect the true radiance of diamonds. Because it is generally 95% pure (18 karat gold is 75% pure), platinum jewellery does not fade or tarnish and retains its look for a lifetime.
Rare: Platinum is rare, the coveted treasure of discerning individuals. There is very little platinum on earth and it is found in even fewer places around the world. This exquisite metal is 30 times rarer than gold which makes it exclusive and distinctive. Eternal: Platinum jewellery is the perfect choice for a lifetime everyday wear. Platinum does not wear away and holds precious stones firmly and securely. Some of the most exquisite jewels in the world are set in platinum. All precious metals can scratch, and platinum is no exception. However, the scratch on a platinum piece is merely a displacement of the metal and none of its volume is lost. What is the difference between whit gold and platinum? Platinum is a metallic element while White Gold is a Gold alloy, which gets its white colour due to palladium or nickel. Why is platinum more expensive than white gold? Platinum is so rare that the price of the raw metal is invariably higher than gold. Platinum jewellery is most often 95% pure compared to only 75% for 18 carat gold. Platinum is denser than gold and weighs half as much again as 18 carat gold. Platinum requires a higher level of craftsmanship and hence the making charges are relatively higher. Is Platinum good value? The price may be higher that similar items in gold but platinum is rare, enduring, beautiful and the perfect host for diamonds. Precious qualities that make it worth paying that little bit extra for.

Gently apply very soft brush to clean the dirt (exception soft stones product). After cleaning, place it on a very soft clean cloth and gently dry it. Make sure to clean the back of all transparent or translucent gemstones well. This allows the facets of the gemstone to reflect light properly. Special care must be taken while cleaning enamel and pearl jewellery as these are easily susceptible to damage.
Kundan Care Here are some tips on how to take good care of your Kundan. When replacing the jewellery after use, wipe it with a suede cloth to restore its shine. If space is an issue, place the jewellery in between layers of cotton wool and seal it in a good plastic bag. Do not clean the jewellery with soap and water. Handle the silk chord used to adjust the length of the necklace with care. Never wet the chord as this will discolour the zari in it.
Purity of Gold What is the purity of gold sold commonly? Most gold sold in the market is impure. i.e. the gold you buy is not certified. Most frequently, the joints and hooks in jewellery are made with lower Karatage of gold. What is the implication of underkaratage on price? With every single unit of under karatage, the customer loses at least Rs 40 per gram. With an attractive price, retailer might claim lower making charges, but the customer ends up losing money. For eg. when 10 grams of 21Kt gold jewellery is sold as 22K to a customer (gold rate for 22Kt being Rs 875 per gram) the customer loses Rs 40 per gram on the purchase.
How to retailers sell with minimal or no making charges? How is Tanishq different? Some retailers sell jewellery with very low making charges, hence it feels like a good bargain. However there are hidden costs involved. There are various ways in which jewellers sets off low making charges. Underkaratage: Selling a lower karatage of gold after having charged for a higher. At Tanishq, the Certificate of Authenticity provided with the jewellery ensures you get what you pay for. Gold rate charged for stone weight: Charging the rate of gold for the weights of stones used in a product. At Tanishq, you are charged only for the net weight of gold used in the product. The price of stone is added separately. Differential buy back: Having a different rate for selling and buying gold jewellery. At Tanishq, a single gold rate is maintained for buying or selling gold jewellery. High Wastage : In some cities across the country there is a wastage component attached to the making charges.
How is gold exchanged commonly? In case of exchange most retailers operate with different buying and selling rates of gold. Few jewellery retailers often sell jewellery at 22K rate, but they would buy back the very same jewellery at 20K rate. Gold certification What is BIS Hallmark, how is it done? Government of India has identified Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) as a sole agency in India to operate this scheme. As per this scheme, the purity of gold is hallmarked and certified from any of the BIS recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre. However Tanishq is the first player to guarantee gold purity ever since BIS started 11 years back.
When a jeweller is BIS hallmarked, what does it entail? Some retailers claim to be selling hallmarked jewellery these days. However, when the retailer makes such a claim, it is not mandatory that all pieces of jewellery in his store are BIS hallmarked. The jeweller can get a BIS hallmark for the store even if only a few pieces in his store carry this hallmark. How is hallmarked jewellery commonly sold? Is there any price implication? Jewellers charge a higher making charge for these hallmarked products since they cannot hide the making charges by underkaratage or selling impure jewellery. Why Tanishq jewellery is not BIS hallmarked? Tanishq was the first jeweller to provide certification for the purity of gold used in the products. Tanishq has its own hallmark to certify the purity of Gold. Every piece of jewellery has ‘Q’ mark which stands for ‘Quality’ indicating that the products has undergone the quality check. You can walk into any Tanishq store and check the purity of the products.
How is Kundan jewellery commonly priced in the market? How are Tanishq Kundan products different? Most jewellers charge the customer for the gross weight of the product; i.e. with stones; hence the customers end up paying the price of gold for the price of stones. The gross weight and the net weight of gold used in the product are mostly never known. Net weight of jewellery refers to the weight of gold only, i.e. without the weight of stones used in the product. Most jewellers are unable to ensure the purity and correct weight of the product since it involves so many stages. Even if the gold is guaranteed for its purity, the actual weight of the gold used in the product if not-certified cannot be know until it is melted. At Tanishq, we ensure the purity and net weight of every product. Each product is accompanied with a Certificate of Authenticity, that certifies the weight of gold and its purity. For eg: if the total weight of product is 100 grams and the actual weight of gold is only 80 grams and stones weight 20 grams, then the jeweller charges you the gold rate.
Why Tanishq for Diamonds?
How diamond jewellery is commonly sold in the market? How is diamond jewellery sold at Tanishq? In different parts of the country, retailers ofter refer to the local terminology for the quality of diamond e.g. Deluxe and Super Deluxe. These are not recognized standards for diamond gradation, but are some subjective terms very loosely used by retailers. Retailers also refer to the extent of inclusions ‘dosham’ in the diamond to describe its quality. At Tanishq, diamond jewellery is certified for its quality using standards set by the GIA, which is acceptable across the world.
