49 Rising to His love, I look up to see Oh Lord, I look up and see What He would like to see in me; That the steps to take are hard for me, Can I be a child of God if what I do But with Your loving hand in mine Is not what He says is true? I know that I can make this climb, Can I be His child if I’m filled with pride Step by step and rung by rung Or selfishness or envy deep inside? Till the end is here and my life is done, Can I be His child if I do not lend With faith and hope and charity A helping hand to aid and mend? My heart and life I give to Thee. Can I be His child if I turn away The poor and sick and only say, (By: Jo Cheah) It’s their karma to suffer thus And so, they should not make a fuss? Can I truly be His child if I only hate And not forgive, forebear or tolerate? I look up to Him and then I see That He really wants me to be……. Someone with true mercy and humility, Someone with patience and generosity, Someone who forgives again and again, As no soul is free of guilt and stains. Someone who lives life with fortitude, With integrity, temperance, gratitude. With love for Him, and so for all, Who turns away when temptation calls, Someone who sees Him in everything And only to Him - to Him - they cling.

It won’t be easy but every step I take will bring me closer to You. So, my beloved Lord, please help me to overcome my negative qualities, tame my ego, surrender all to You and to climb the steps one by one…..

52 Devotion must confer patience and fortitude Enter upon that task of spiritual discipline from now on; that is the lesson you must learn here. Otherwise, a pilgrimage leads only to the accumulation of vessels - you buy vessels from wherever you go: from Rameshwaram, Tirupati, Kasi, Haridhwar, Madhura, Kumbhakonam. That is the merit you get from a pilgrimage, a room full of vessels. You come from long distances, incur heavy expenses, suffer in the cold in the open, or lie in the shade of trees, and wait for days, expecting the longed-for interview with Me; but in the end, you return and dissipate the peace and happiness you derive from this place. Devotion is something sweet, soothing, refreshing, and restoring. It must confer patience and fortitude. The devotee will not be perturbed if another gets an interview first or if another is given greater consideration. He is humble and bides his time: he knows that there is a higher power that knows more and that it is just and impartial. In the light of that knowledge, the devotee will communicate his troubles and problems only to his Lord; he will not humiliate himself by talking about them to all and sundry, for what can a man, who is as helpless as himself, do to relieve him? It is only those who have that implicit faith in God, who will deign to communicate only with the Lord and none else, who deserve the nectar of immortality. (Sathya Sai Speaks Vol. 1, p. 163)
