CORONAVIRUS PRAYER Loving Lord, We pray for your love and compassion to abound as we walk through this challenging season. We ask for wisdom for those who bear the load of making decisions with widespread consequences. We pray for those who are suffering with sickness and for all who are caring for them. We ask protection for the elderly and vulnerable to not succumb to the risks of the virus. We pray for misinformation to be curbed that fear may take no hold in hearts and minds. As we exercise the good sense that you in your mercy provide may we also approach each day in faith and peace, trusting in the truth of your goodness towards us. Amen. THE BISHOP OF BURNLEY WRITES... Dear Friends, This comes with my love and prayers as you keep the holy season of Lent and gather together to encounter Jesus in the Eucharist. In these forty days we prepare ourselves through prayer, fasting and penitence to renew our baptismal promises at Easter. The privilege of refreshing our baptismal com- mitment to serving Jesus and following him is the highlight of the church’s year and a joy for us all. At the start of Holy Week I will be inviting your priest to dedicate his life anew to priestly service at the Chrism Mass. In the presence of his Bishop and surrounded by his fellow priests, he will make again the promises of Ordination in order to be prepared to serve you through Holy Week and then for the rest of the year. At the same Mass the oils which are used for ministry are blessed. 4 | St John the Evangelist, Lund | April 2020
Without God’s people, there is no point in priesthood, and so I am writing in the hope that at least a few of you from your Parish might be able to attend the Chrism Mass to pray for your priest as he takes this important step. The Chrism is a joyful celebration and a wonderful chance to join together with fellow Christians at the start of Holy Week. Moreover, it is followed by a lovely feast when we can enjoy being together. The Chrism Mass this year will take place on Palm Sunday (April 5th) at St Anne’s Church, St Anne’s on Sea, FY8 2EA, beginning at 6pm. It would be really good to see you there. Thank you for your continued commitment to Christ in his church. Yours, Bishop Philip Hearing Problem? A Christian Retreat at the Parish of Lund The Old Norse word ‘lund’ means ‘a grove of trees’. This is a day to take time out and contemplate creation, particularly trees and the peace they offer. We will reflect on The Cosmic Christ and Christ, The Tree of Life. The day includes stillness, prayer, discussion, reflection, presentation and an exploration of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale, The Nightingale, including a performance of this wonderful tale. INTRODUCTION TO CHRCISHTRIIASNTIMANEDMIETADTITIAOTNION “Be still and know that I am God” Meditation is an ancient form of prayer. Its aim is to bring the distracted mind to silence and stillness, and rest in the presence of God. Even in our modern busy lives this is possible. We invite you to come along and try this form of prayer which is simple and peaceful. Lund Meditation Group provides an opportunity to experience the practice of Christian Meditation in a small group, to learn about its origins, and to discover its relevance as a form of prayer for the contemporary world. Spirituality and Dementia Care: A Gospel Message of Hope. In early March we were delighted to welcome Sister Siobhan O’Keeffe to Lund for a day of reflection. Sister Siobhan is an RGN; she has a degree in Applied Theology as well as a Diploma in Person-Centered Dementia Care. She has worked in Outreach Dementia Support Services and Nursing Home Management. She currently works in Community Palliative Care. Today an increasing number of people are living with dementia and the purpose of the day was to help us respond to the social and pastoral issues this raises. During the morning sessions we were given a comprehensive overview of the clinical aspects of dementia. This factual part of the day was peppered with many examples and lively anecdotes from Sister Siobhan’s own experiences. During the lunch break a number of the participants enjoyed a leg-stretch around our grounds whilst some visited the church. Sister Siobhan began the afternoon by telling of a visit to Australia where she was a speaker at an International Dementia Conference. Before the conference began, she spoke to the local police to let them know that there would be people attending the conference who had dementia and who might get lost when they left the venue. 16 | St John the Evangelist, Lund | April 2020
In the course of this tale, Sister donned a baseball cap with the word MISSING emblazoned on the front. She wore this for the rest of the day. In considering the teachings of the gospels and how these can be applied in everyday situations, she led us in discussion, in prayer, and in periods of silence. Everyone who attended the day found it to be most worthwhile. “Powerful”, “informative”, and “thought-provoking” were typical comments overheard on the way out. Many of those who attended from outwith Lund hope to be able to arrange a similar day with Sister Siobhan in their own parishes and services. Helen Bushe New Pilgrim Path Website of the Week. Saint Patrick really existed. Two Latin works, still surviving, can definitely be attributed to Patrick’s own authorship. Composed in Latin, in the fifth century, and preserved in manuscripts dating from the 800's onwards, these are the oldest extant texts written in Ireland. One of these documents is his Confessio or “Confession”, which is a testimony to Patrick’s personal faith and trust in God, to whom he attributes the entire success of his mission in Ireland. This short document, in a very accessible and accurate English translation by Pádraig McCarthy, can be read at www.newpilgrimpath.ie THE FACTS OF LIFE This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.
