WINTER 2021 / 223 It was the first year I traveled to Odessa. On the main boulevard Diribavskaya, next to the opera house, a boy played the violin almost every day, always in the same place, under the poster of Freddy Mercury. I photographed him only once. I returned to Odessa almost every year for the next five years. In 2005 I met the same boy again, taller of course and a little different, in the same place, playing the violin. I could not believe in my eyes… At that time I had printed some postcards in Athens, one of them was the photograph of the boy I took back in 2000. Without second thought, I approach him and place in the violin’s case, instead of money, the postcard with his picture. He soon stopped playing and approached to see the case. I will never forget the surprise in his eyes and his joy once he saw his face. This is the magic and power of photography. Odessa Ukraine 2000

TIMESILENCE PHOTOGRAPHY friends / 224 It was summer and I was in Odessa for a photo shoot. It was extremely hot and so I decided to visit some Crimean cities to have a few swims, Sevastopol, Simfer- opol Theodosia, Yalta. I stayed in Yalta for about a week and almost every day went up and down the dock, in quest for an incident ca- pable of surprising me. It was relatively early in the morning, and the old man had taken his seat, playing an old Russian melody on his accordion. Next to me was walking a woman who, when close to the musician, suddenly started dancing. In a flash, I take out the camera and take three photos, trying to fit the wooden boat “Argo” in the background. Fortunately, the reflexes worked quickly… later, when I printed the photograph, I saw the crack in the ground at the accordionist’s feet. This pleased me greatly! Yalta 2000

TIMESILENCE PHOTOGRAPHY friends / 226 I was photographing various gypsy villages in northern Romania; I had visited more than 10 villages in almost a month. I always asked if there was a wedding I could go and photograph, but there wasn’t, unfortunately. Suddenly, a kid comes and tells me an old woman died, and if I would like to go to the cemetery to photograph. At first I thought it was a joke and didn’t really believe it, but I didn’t have anything to lose. So, as I approach the cemetery, I see a small procession of 10 to 15 people, a small band with two violins and an accordion at the front, the coffin, and a few gypsy rela- tives following at the back. I asked for permission to take photos, which fortunately they gave me without asking for anything in return. The whole situation was slightly reminiscent of Kustourit- sa’s “Gypsy Time”. From one moment to the next the mourning turned into joy. Suddenly the band started playing a livelier tune and everybody started singing. Someone approaches me and offers me a shot of home- made vodka, just above the grave. “to your health” I toast, “to life” he says, and we drink it in one sip. Coltau Romania 2009

TIMESILENCE PHOTOGRAPHY friends / 228 I am a coffee lover, and in whichever city I am, I first visit the cafés and then the museums. It was a teenage dream to visit Venice, I had read a poem about café Florian and my desire grew. Fortunately, my dream came true and I visited many times. The first time, I remember I went straight to the most famous and oldest café of Europe, the café Florian in St. Mark’s Square. I was drinking coffee where the great composers, intel- lectuals and writers of the previous century frequented, from Casanova to Lord Byron and from Goethe to Marcel Proust. It was a nice day and I sat outside in the square, the band was playing a beautiful melody, I ordered a machi- atto and felt happy for a moment. I was in the most magical city of the world, sitting in the most beautiful café of the world, enjoying a wonder- ful sun…and, oh, my God!... right in front of my eyes, at the next table, a couple was making eternal promises of love. TIMESILENCE PHOTOGRAPHY friends / 230 I was at the town where I was born and lived for many years, Arta. At that time “the doctor” was alive, so they called him, an old gypsy man who was wandering around the town’s centre with a bottle of wine and a half-broken guitar with one string. Should you treat him to a drink, he would sit with you and play whatever came to his mind. On hot middays he used to sleep in the parks under the trees. I always remember him as a figure with a coat and a half-broken guitar. I photographed him twice, first lying in a park, sleeping, and the second in an alley next to the church of Panagia Paregoritissa, getting lost in the street… Arta Greece 2000

TIMESILENCE PHOTOGRAPHY friends / 232 It was winter and I was in Lvof, Ukraine. It was quite cold and there was a lot of snow on the roads. I had entered a park and was enjoying the abso- lute silence. I was alone… Suddenly I heard a melody, a wonderful melody in this absolute silence. It was as if angels were playing a Bach melody. The further I went, the louder the music became. After a while I was in front of a beautiful landscape, on a bench was sitting an old man who, with closed eyes, was playing a marvelous melody on the flute. He did not realise my presence and so I managed very carefully (to not spoil this mystical atmosphere), to cap- ture two photos. He was not playing for money, there was no one around him, only a small paper image of the Virgin Mary he had placed in front of his feet Lvof Ukraine 2004
