A well-known journalist went to interview Jack Parrish in an expensive New York restaurant. The journalist was late, but fortunately when he arrived, he found the great man was not there yet. The waiter thought that the young man was just trying to be funny, because he said that his name was Jack Parrish. And it was. In spite of its widespread diffusion, music remains an enigma. Music for those who live with it is so important that to be deprived of it would be cruel and unusual punishment. Moreover the perception of music as a central part of life is not only for professionals or gifted amateurs. It is true that those who studied the techniques of musical composition can more thoroughly appreciate the beauty of a musical work than those who have not. But even listeners who cannot read musical notation and who have never learnt an instrument may be deeply involved so that a day without music is wasted.
In the context of contemporary culture, this is puzzling. Many people think that music is a luxury rather than a necessity, and that words or pictures are the only means of influence. Those who do not appreciate music think that it has no significance except giving pleasure. This is, no doubt, why our society seldom provides a significant place in education. Today, when education is becoming very practical, music is likely to be treated as an extra in the school curriculum and which only well- to-do parents can afford. 6. What does the author of the text find enigmatic about music? A That it can be enjoyed by anyone. В That a thing so widely loved does not play a more important role in our society. С That so many people who love music do not enjoy it more often. D That our education system does not find it important. 7. How do different people take music? A As something unusual. Some people believe that there are mysterious animals of large lakes, which live in the water of large lakes or high up in the snow on the mountain tops or deep in the forests. A few people claim that they have actually seen the creatures. Lake Okanagan is situated in the Rocky mountains of western Canada and some local people say that a strange creature lives at the bottom of this large lake (128 kilometres long and 230 metres deep): the Ogopogo, they call it. You can read the
name forwards or backwards and it's still the same name. You can see the stones about this creature in two different ways, too: believe them or doubt them? Ed Fletcher, who lives in a house on the side of the lake, is certain that there is something there, under the surface. He says that he has taken more than 50 photos of it out in the middle of the lake. He reports that it is green in colour and about fifteen metres long. But his photos are not at all clear so we can't be sure. Other people say that the Ogopogo is grey and only about six metres long. Some say it has a head like a dog; some say it has horns on top of its head, like a goat. So who should we believe? Perhaps we should not be too quick to laugh at those stories. Television teams from Japan and the USA have been down into the lake in small submarines, in the area near a small island. They have not been able to make clear pictures either, but they do believe that something lives near the island — something very large, deep under the water. And if it is there, then what is it? 6. For each question, mark the letter next to the correct answer - А, В, C, or D. Sixty years ago, before the start of the \"throw-away\" consumer societies of today's world, people did not throw away so many things. They used and re-used bottles, jars, cardboard boxes, paper bags, etc. much more carefully than we do today. Now, more than fifty years later, we are returning to the same good idea — we call it \"recycling\". We are again thinking about what we throw out. Why do we throw away so much food packaging, so many plastic supermarket bags, old newspapers and phone books, drinks bottles and cans? What is all this rubbish doing to our environment, to the world we live in? Can't we use some of it again? Answer: yes, we can. New industries — recycling industries — are staring to re- use some of our rubbish. For example, the island of Taiwan now buys tons of waste paper from the USA and recycles it to make newspapers, and for use in offices and
homes. Japan takes scrap metal from the USA and makes some parts of new cars with it. Most European and American cities now have \"recycling centres\" for people's old bottles and newspapers. All this recycling is not only good for the environment but it is good business, too. A recycled aluminium can is twenty per cent cheaper to make than a new can, for instance. For both the recycling and the economy, recycling makes very good sense. 6. Why is recycling so important? A Because it makes us richer. В Because it makes us happier. С Because it improves the environment. D Because it is a modern trend. 7. Is recycling a new idea? A Yes, it was adopted by \"throw-away\" societies. В No, it was known long ago. They returned to the bar. An hour later another train arrived and the same thing happened. They missed the train again. Two hours later the porter told them that the last train was due 5 minutes later. Again the men took another drink and when they came to the station the train had already started. Two of them could catch the train, but the third one missed it and went back to the bar. \"Where are your friends travelling?\" asked him the barman. \"I don't know,\" answered the man, \"they have just come to sec me off.\" VARIANT 3 Bill was on his way home from Oxford. When he arrived at the railway station the train was already standing at the platform. All the carriages were full, but Bill found a seat between two ladies in a non-smoking compartment. When the train started a man ran down the platform, opened the carriage door and got in to a first-class compartment. He was wearing a black hat and a black suit and he had an umbrella and an evening newspaper. The train went fast and didn't stop until it was in the country. Then it stopped at every station. It was very hot. The ladies were talking so loudly that Bill decided to leave the compartment. In the corridor he saw the man in black again. He was standing at the open window, his right hand was on the communication cord near the first class compartment. Before Bill could do anything, the man pulled the cord. The train stopped immediately. The man in black got off the train and walked fast to a large house. The guard arrived, looked at Bill. \"Who pulled the cord?\" he asked. \"It was that man. The one who is walking to the large house. I believe he is a thief. I'll run to the house while you phone the police.\" The guard looked out of the window. \"That's Sir Montague. He sometimes doesn't get out at the station and pulls the cord when the train passes his house. He pays 25 pounds each time he does it because he is very rich.\"
VARIANT 4 The zoo had big baskets for rubbish, where people who bought ice-creams and other things could throw the papers from them. One Saturday afternoon Mr Brown was walking near the cages where the lions and tigers were kept. Usually there were a lot of people round the cages on a Saturday afternoon, but that day there was nobody there. Mr Brown was surprised. He was even more surprised when he saw a crowd around the rubbish basket near the lion's cage. He went towards the crowd. Most of them were children. Ho looked over their heads and saw — a little mouse, which was running about among pieces of paper in the basket looking for bits of food. It was only a few centimetres from the children, but it was not afraid — and the children were more interested in this small, common mouse than in the lions and tigers because they could watch it very closely and see life and enjoy it. VARIANT 5 One day a man was walking along the street. He carried an old bag in his hands. He was wondering why people who had so much money were never satisfied but always wanted more. \"As for me,\" he said, \"if I only had enough to eat, I should not ask for anything else.\" Just at this moment Fortune came down the street. She heard the man and stopped. \"Listen,\" she said, \"I want to help you. Hold your bag, and I shall put diamonds into it. But if a diamond falls down to the ground, it will become dust.\" The man agreed. He quickly opened his bag and Fortune put there a lot of diamonds. The bag began to grow heavy. \"Is that enough?\" asked Fortune. \"Not yet.\" The man's hands began to tremble. \"You're the richest man in the world now,\" said the Fortune. \"Just a few more, and a few more,\" said the man. Another diamond was added and the bag slipped. All the diamonds fell down to the ground and became dust. Fortune disappeared leaving the man in the street. VARIANT 6 Once an Englishman and his wife were travelling abroad. When they arrived in Rome they decided to stay at one of the best hotels there. They filled the FORMs and the hotel porter showed them to their room. They liked it very much. It was a single room, not large but very comfortable. They were happy that it was an inside room and hoped that they wouldn't hear much street noise. The Englishman's wife was very tired after the trip and wanted to have a good rest. After dinner the Englishman decided to go sightseeing. His wife, however, could not go with him and went to bed. The Englishman was walking about the city for a long time. Rome impressed him very much. In the evening he wanted to go home but he didn't know the address of the hotel and couldn't find the way back. He came up to a passer-by and asked him in English, \"Could you show me the way to the Flower Hotel?\" But the passer-by didn't tell him anything and hurried away. The Englishman wanted to know the time. He put his hand into his pocket to take out his watch. But there was no watch there. He thought that the passer-by had stolen it. He ran after him and asked to give his watch back. The passer-by didn't know any English but he understood that the man wanted to have his watch. And thinking that the man was a mugger he gave it to him. It took the Englishman a lot of time to find his hotel. He' told everything to his wife. She was listening to him attentively and when he finished his story, she showed him the watch that was on the dressing table. The Englishman understood that he himself was the thief.
FORM 7 VARIANT 1 Sally had been studying at an art college for a year and, like most students, she did not have much money. It was going to be her mother's birthday soon, and she wondered what she could buy her as a present that could be nice and useful but not too expensive. At lunch time one day, a week before her mother's birthday, she decided to have a quick sandwich and a cup of coffee instead of her usual meal in the college hall, and then go shopping near her college to try and find a nice present for her mother. Half an hour later, she came across a shop that was selling umbrellas cheap, and decided that one of those would solve her problem, since her mother had lost hers. She chose a black umbrella because you can carry that with clothes of any colour. On her way home she felt hungry and went to the buffet leaving her umbrella behind in the compartment of the train. When she came back it had gone. Sally burst into tears when she saw that the umbrella was no, longer there. The other three passengers felt sorry for her when she explained what had happened and asked for her mother's address in order to be able to send it to her in case someone had taken it by mistake and brought it back after Sally had got out of the train. The next week, Sally heard from her mother. Her letter said, 'Thank you very much for your lovely presents, but why did you send me three black umbrellas?' VARIANT 2 The air hostess was in the small kitchen at the back of the airplane preparing the trays for lunch when a little old lady came up and spoke to her. \"Could you please tell me,\" she asked, \"where the ladies' lavatory is in this airplane?\" \"Yes, madam,\" said the air hostess and smiled. \"It is right at the other end of the plane — at the front.\" The little old lady went too far. She walked all the way to the front of the plane, opened the door in front of her, and saw the captain of the plane and the other officers. They were all busy at their work and didn't see her. She went out again, shut the door and returned to the air hostess. \"Oh, didn't you find it, madam?\" the girl asked her. \"Yes, I did,\" said the little old lady. 'But there are four men in the ladies' lavatory watching television.\" VARIANT 3 Hurriet Reeves was a famous actress but her great-success made her very selfish and unkind to people. On the stage she always tried to attract the attention of the public to herself alone, and after the performance she took no notice of her fellow actors. She always made promises but never kept them. When she grew older she began to have heart attacks and had to retire. Harriet had a lot of money and could afford to live quite comfortably, but by this time everybody in the theatre hated her and she felt quite lonely.
A year later on her birthday she did not receive a single flower or a telephone call. She was so upset that she had a bad heart attack. The doctor who examined her told her frankly that her chance of living was not too good and insisted that she should stay in bed as much as possible. Harriet took the news bravely and for a couple of weeks followed the doctor's instructions. But one day she could no longer be alone and called in her butler to talk over a plan. She wanted to invite all her friends to her place. The same evening she wrote invitations to the actors. She thought she would get them together and apologize for her behaviour in the past. At 10 o'clock Saturday night none of the guests turned up. When she realized that nobody would come to the party she suddenly felt very weak and tired. Her butler found her lying on the floor sonic hours later. She was dead. A few days later when the butler was looking through the papers on her desk he discovered a pack of invitations, which Harriet had forgotten to post. VARIANT 4 Johnny was six years old and his favourite game was cowboys and Indians. He had a cowboy suit and a belt with two guns, and spent most of his time pretending to be fighting Indians. One day his mother took him in a train for the first time. Of course, he wore his cowboy suit and carried his two guns. He had seen a film of an attack by Red Indians on a train in the Wild West, so his mother was not surprised when he began playing cowboys and Indians in the train. But when he wanted to open the window wide so that he could shoot out of it, she thought it too dangerous, and allowed him to have it open only at the top, so that he could shoot out of it if he stood up, but could not fall out. He was playing happily, hiding behind the curtain, suddenly stepping forward, firing a shot out of the window and then quickly stepping back again, when he suddenly gave a cry, fell back on to the seat and lay there with his chin resting on his chest and his arms resting loosely beside him. Of course, his mother was frightened. She thought that something from outside the train must have hit him as he stood at the window. She shook the child gently, but he made no movement, and his eyes rolled in his head. His mother was now very worried indeed. She picked Johnny up in her arms to go and find some help; but just then he lifted one of his arms with great effort, pointed to his chest and said in a weak whisper, \"Pull the arrow out, will you?\" VARIANT 5 The school teacher thought that hobbies were very important for every child. She encouraged all her pupils to have one, and sometimes arranged for their parents to come and see the work they had done as a result. One Friday morning the teacher told the class that those of them who had a hobby could have a holiday that afternoon to get the things they had made so that the parents could see them the following afternoon.
So on Friday afternoon, while those of the pupils who had nothing to show did their usual lessons, the lucky ones who had made something were allowed to go home on condition that they returned before five o'clock to bring what they were going to show, und to arrange it. When the afternoon lessons began, the teacher was surprised to see that Tommy was not there. He was the laziest boy in the class, and the teacher found it difficult to believe that he had a hobby. However, at a quarter to five, Tommy arrived with a beautiful collection of butterflies in glass cases. After his teacher had admired them and helped him to arrange them on a table in the classroom, she was surprised to see Tommy pick them up again and begin to leave. \"What are you doing, Tommy?\" she asked. \"Those things must be here until tomorrow afternoon. That's when the parents are coming to see them.\" \"I know they are coming then,\" answered Tommy, \"and I am going to bring them tomorrow; but my big brother doesn't want them to be out of our house at night.\" \"Aren't the butterflies yours?\" asked the teacher. \"No,\" answered Tommy. \"They belong to him.\" \"But Tommy, you are supposed to show your own hobby here, not somebody else's!\" said the teacher. \"I know that,\" answered Tommy. \"My hobby is watching my brother collecting butterflies.\" VARIANT 6 Some boys join the navy when they are quite young, and are given a course of training as sailors. It is a long course, both on land and at sea, and during it the boys study things like mathematics and science as well as learning to tie knots, fire guns and do other practical things. One of the important things they are taught is, of course, how to swim. In the old days, many sailors were unable to swim, but nowadays it is rare to find one that cannot. At one school for sailor boys, the swimming instructor was very good. He had never had a boy whom he had failed to teach to swim by the time the course ended. One year, however, there was one particular boy on the training course who seemed quite unable to learn to swim. The instructor tried giving him extra lessons, he tried throwing him into the pool at the deep end, and he tried holding him up with a rope tied to the end of the fishing rod while he attempted to swim, but he had no success at all, whatever he did. In the end, as the time drew near when the course was due to end, he had to give up. One day he called the boy aside after the swimming lesson and said to him, \"John, I have tried very hard to leach you to swim, but I have failed — for the first time in my life. Now I want to give you n piece of advice. Listen carefully.\" \"Yes, sir,\" answered the boy. \"Well,\" the instructor went on, \"if you are ever on board the ship and it sinks, just jump over the side into the sea, go right down to the bottom and run to the shore as fast as you can. That is the only way you will save your life.\"
FORM 8 VARIANT 1 Alice: Hi Sam. What are you doing out here? There's a practice starting in five minutes for the school play. We've decided to do it under the big oak tree in the garden today - it's too hot inside. Sam: I'm not going to come. Alice: But you have to come. You're playing Romeo. How can we do Romeo and Juliet without Romeo? Sam: I'm not going to be Romeo any more. Alice: Oh, don't be silly. Why aren't you? You were so pleased when Miss Hayes chose you. And you are such a good actor too. Sam: You might think so but Miss Hayes doesn't. She says my voice isn't loud enough. Alice: Oil that's too bad. I know she asked you to speak louder at the first few practices we had but you did what she said. You've got a louder voice than most of the other people acting anyway. Sam: She says she is not going to give me another chance. Alice: I could go and talk to her. After all I am playing Juliet so it's important I get on with the person who's acting Romeo. I'd prefer it to be you than anyone else. Sam: It won't help and she has already asked someone else to be Romeo anyway. She offered mc another smaller part but I don't really want it. Alice: But it will be such a pity if you're not in the play at all. Why don't you take the part she is offering and may be you can have a bigger part next time? Sam: You can't persuade me. I spent such a long time learning Romeo's speeches. I can't start again. I am going to offer to do the scenery instead. They are still looking for someone to do that. Alice: So at least I'll see you at the practices. Come on then. I expect everyone is waiting for us. Sam: I won't come today. I'll see Miss Hayes later and see what she thinks of my idea. VARIANT 2 Marcus: Hi there! Cora: Morning, or should I say afternoon? Marcus: I am not late, am I? Cora: Only a few minutes today. But you're never exactly early, are you? Marcus: It's traffic! There were queues of buses stopping anything from moving up the London Road. Cora: But that's where you're wrong. It's the cars that make traffic jams because there are so many of them. And most of the time they just have one person in them — like you! At least the buses have more than one person in them. Anyway I don't know why you don't come to work on your bike. You'd pass all the jams and you'll be fitter. Marcus: I just don't accept that. What about the air I'd breathe while I was cycling? I'd get wet in the rain. And I'd arrive at work all hot and sticky. Cora: But you would not if you allowed enough time to go across the park. It's really quite pleasant riding that way, and it's not much further. It's cheaper. Marcus: Yeah, anything would be cheaper than the buses in this town. If they were not so expensive, more people would catch them. They should make them cheaper or employers should pay part of people's bus fares. That would cut the traffic and we'd all get to work in much less time. Cora: And it'd be healthier for everyone, whether they were on a bike or not. Marcus: If the buses weren't too old and smelly. Some of them arc terrible. Cora: And so are cars and lorries of course. So, are you going to take the bus tomorrow, then? Marcus: Well I might consider it but unfortunately the bus stop's a long way from my flat so I'd have to get up earlier, and tomorrow's my day off anyway. Cora: Honestly, I sometimes wonder how you manage to get out of bed in the mornings! Marcus: Well, I don't have to tomorrow. Cora: So we'd better get on with some work now. Marcus: OK, OK.
VARIANT 3 Sophie: Hi, William. William: Oh, hi, Sophie. Sophie: This is a good music shop, isn't it? Before it opened, I had to ask my mum to buy me what I wanted in Birmingham because there wasn't a good shop here. William: Your mum went all the way to Birmingham to buy what you wanted? It's about twenty kilometres from here! Sophie: No, silly. She works there. William: So do you go with her sometimes during the holidays and spend the day shopping in Birmingham? Sophie: Well I find the city centre a bit big so I get anxious about getting lost. I'd rather tell my mum what I want and she gets it for me. She doesn't mind. William: Well next time you go I could come with you. If we had a map, it would not be a problem for me. Sophie: Yes, if we were together, it'd be OK. That CD you had in your hand when I came in. Are you going to buy it? William: I already have. Why? Sophie: Oh, I was thinking of getting it too. It's the new one by that band 521, isn't? I didn't use to like them much but their music has got a lot better recently. William: Mmm. Don't get the same one. You can borrow mine. If you got a different one by the same band then you could lend that to me. Sophie: Well... William: I don't think this one is very good anyway actually. Look at these others — they've got much better songs on them. Sophie: Mmm, I had not seen that one. But I am going to get the one I planned to buy — that's what I really want. William: Well, here you are then. Happy birthday! I've just bought it for you. Sophie: Oh thank you but my birthday's not till next week. I really prefer surprises. William: You spoilt the surprise. I had to give it to you now to stop you buying it. VARIANT 4 Radio presenter: And to finish our programme about the area, I must advise you to go to Eastern. Cars aren't allowed into the centre so it's very pleasant to walk around. The museum is on the hill just outside the town in a very old building, which used to be a prison. It's much a happier place now than it was then, I can tell you. One room describes the history of the building itself. You can't miss it — it's just in front of the castle and you can see that from any place of the town. History is brought to life in the museum. Go back to the 19th century; go along the street with copies of all the original shops. There are even horses and carts that you can ride on. If you can wait there's a new exhibition opening soon. Eastern is famous for one thing in particular — something most of us enjoy. If you like chocolate, this exhibition is the place for you. You can learn about its history. I've never seen such a variety of different kinds. Rut don't go yet because it does not start until the 14th of July. Have a look round the town too while you are in town. If you start in the main square and follow the green signs, they will take you to the museum. And you will see lots of other interesting things on the way too. Well, that's all for today...
VARIANT 5 Speaker 1 Tim had this friend with an apartment in the Canaries so we all set to book a charter and get down there. It was on the way to the.travel agent's that it happened. I suppose I was lucky to have come out of it with nothing more than a broken leg. I hit that tree pretty hard. So that was the end of my summer. Speaker 2 We pick up and go every year. Usually mid- to late July but sometimes earlier if we can manage it. The house has been in the family for generations. Jane's parents actually used to live there all year round. It must have been freezing. There is no heating. It's blissfully cool in summer. Speaker 3 I never go away before October. Everything's so crowded in July and August and it's almost too hot. Who wants to be on a beach with several thousand other people when you can wait a bit and have it virtually to yourself? I don't mind being here when everyone else is out of town. I get more done in one month than I do in the whole of the rest of the year, I always say. And this year was no exception. Speaker 4 That's my idea of the perfect summer holiday... As far as I am concerned it's the only summer holiday. I like to go somewhere where I don't understand enough of the language to read the newspaper headlines. That's what we did this year and I really recharged the batteries. Speaker 5 My brother is working there actually so I decide to take a chance and go there for summer. And I don't regret. In fact I've enjoyed every minute of it because it was fantastic. Thailand is one of the best places that I have ever seen. Food, people and sites are fantastic! Speaker 6 It's the only chance 1 have so I'm always determined to really make the most of it. I never go back to the same place because I've usually covered every inch of it by the time my two weeks are up. No, it's somewhere different every year. This year I went a bit further than usual. To Sydney. I loved it. I might even move there. VARIANT 6 Today we are going to speak about the effect of mood on our body, spirit and brain. We all feel happy to be alive in the summer, but it may not only he the warmer weather that makes us feel like this. Although we think we choose what we eat because it tastes or looks good, in fact we make unconscious choices based on the way food makes us feel. Summer foods like seafood and salads are full of chemicals that put us in и good mood. One chemical that is found in high protein food is serotonin. It makes you feel calm and relaxed. It can also be found in coffee and tea, ginger and honey, but the best source is spinach which also contains folic acids in large quantities. A deficiency in folic acid can cause depression, sleeplessness, forgetfulness and irritability. Fish has traditionally been considered an ideal brain food because it contains high levels of the mineral selenium, which can also effect how you feel. A lack of selenium in your diet can produce tiredness and depression. If you want some food that will cheer you up instantly, then chillies are the answer. They can have a dramatic effect on your mood giving a sense of well-being. A slow acting but longer lasting antidepressant called DMAE can be found in anchovies and sardines. DMAE also heightens intelligence and makes it easier to learn. So if you've got an important exam coming up, make sure you eat all those foods that keep you feeling good and thinking clearly.

FORM 7 Read the text and be able to do the tasks below. I. Last year three friends decided to spend their holiday in the mountains. They set off by car early in the morning and by late afternoon they had almost reached the village where they were going to stay. After stopping for a quick cup of tea at a wayside cafe, set off again along the winding road that led to the mountains. They had a map with them and according to it the village they were going to stay in was only about fifteen miles away. It got dark and it began to rain soon, which of course made it more difficult to see the road clearly. After they had driven for about fifteen miles, there was still no sign of the village. They went on for another five miles and then the car suddenly stopped. At first they thought that they had run out of petrol, but then they found out that it was not the reason. Since they could not start the car they decide to spend the night in the car, though they had very little food with them and there was not much room for three people in the car. Early in the morning a car came along the road. They stopped the driver and asked him where the village was. It turned out that it was on the other side of the hill. She had lived alone ever since her daughter had emigrated to Australia many years before. She always used to invite the postman in for a cup of tea. Just as the postman approached the gate, a small boy came running down the hill. Suddenly he slipped and fell down. The postman left his bicycle and hurried across the road to help the boy. After a quick examination, he found that the boy had hurt his leg very badly. In fact he thought that the boy's leg might be broken.
