La casa a Melides é il risultato di un vecchio deside- rio del cliente di costruire una casa di vacanze su un terreno da egli stesso cercato durante vari anni tra la Serra di Grândola e l’oceano Atlantico. 110 Piú che un progetto per una casa, il committente ricercava un’idea riguardo la forma di abitare quel luogo e fu con questo presupposto che decise di bandire un concorso invitando alcuni architetti all’elaborazione di una proposta che gli permettes- se di scegliere la soluzione piú vicina al suo imma- ginario. Il desiderio di vivere quel paesaggio si este- se alla forma stessa di abitarlo, diventando il tema chiave del progetto. Il progetto iniziò, in un primo momento, per trova- re il punto esatto dove fondare la casa, garantendo una corretta esposizione solare, una buona prote- zione dai venti e una centralità rispetto al sistema di viste tra la montagna e l’oceano. La topografia irregolare del terreno e il programma, che proponeva la costruzione di una casa con un’a- rea di appoggio per una eventuale futura espan- sione, furono due punti chiave che suggerirono la frammentazione in due volumi. Con ciò si rafforzò l’intenzione iniziale di ridurre la scala e la presenza del costruito. Il volume inferiore, seminterrato e rivestito con blocchi di cemento fabbricati in situ, si fonde con il terreno come a formare uno spesso muro di sup- porto sopra il quale poggia il volume superiore par- zialmente sospeso sul paesaggio. Tale strategia progettuale ha condotto alla chia- rificazione formale, sintesi tra due modi di abitare complementari che si rivelano e si svelano attraver- so le relazioni stabilite con il luogo. Il volume infe- riore della casa, dove si situano le aree di servizio e le stanze degli ospiti, é caratterizzato dal ritmo serrato di finestre che ne rafforza il carattere più in- timo.
