Soroptimist International Bangkok SIB Climate Change Initiative Recently Soroptimist celebrated it 100th year by bringing back two fantastic environment projects that honor our founding members and the values they handed down since 1921. SIB’s Climate Change Initiative came about in 2018. In the past ten years Thailand has experienced air pollution, which didn’t exist when we were children. As President it became my mission to improve our carbon footprint and do more. To promote awareness, plant trees and reduce the use of disposable plastic by getting local communities involved and, thereby, feeling more responsible for protecting their environment. Thailand is a signatory of the Paris Climate Change Agreement since 2016 and now on the cusp of passing the Climate Change draft bill, which will help the country protect the environment and drive the economy. This requires collaboration. With collaboration comes the power of exponential effects. Let’s adopt a paradox thinking mindset. That is to say we can have the best of both worlds – climate change action should not be a choice of either/or, i.e. emissions vs poverty, emissions vs a lifestyle of food, cars & travel; we can have both. We at Soroptomist are glad to be the driving force of change and align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 for a better world. Nirupama Narula Chansrichawla 95
