Native to western North America, these flying mammals have an especially large presence in the thick pine forests of the Rocky Mountain states like Utah, Colorado, etc., but are also seen in as far as southern Mexico. During the summer months they can be found roosting in abandoned buildings, but they generally prefer open areas with low and steady temperatures such as caves, cliffs, and even abandoned mines. While males tend to roost alone, females will raise their pups in maternity colonies that can range from 12 to 200 members, although groups of 1,000 have been recorded. With a large wing area to mass ratio, the townsend’s big-eared bat is capable of high maneuverability, low-speed flight, and the ability to hover while flying. In fact, tests conducted on straight-line tracks clocked their speeds ranging from between 6.4 to 12.3 mph. As their namesake, the large ears on townsend’s big- eared bats are what enable them to navigate and hunt with accuracy. From their larynx they emit low- frequency pulses, which only last a few thousandths of a second, that bounce off objects and return back to","their ears. With these quick signals, they can determine the shape, size, distance, and even texture of their main prey: moths. They make up about 80% of their diet, which also includes other destructive species like gypsy moths, making the townsend’s big- eared bat an effective source of pest-control that help reduce the environmental and agricultural damage caused by insects. Many of the animals on O’Reilly covers are endangered; all of them are important to the world. The cover illustration is by Karen Montgomery, based on a black and white engraving from British Quadrupeds. The cover fonts are Gilroy Semibold and Guardian Sans. The text font is Adobe Minion Pro; the heading font is Adobe Myriad Condensed; and the code font is Dalton Maag’s Ubuntu Mono."]
