Peter Smith, Secretary and Vice President Secretary Good Morning we hope you have had a good Christmas and we welcome you to Mayfield Stadium for the “Boxing Day” fixture with our neighbours from Beckenham Town. We extend Christmas greetings and a warm welcome to all connected with Beckenham and to today’s match officials. We hope you enjoy your short stay, have a safe journey home and enjoy the rest of the festive season. Our last game at Redhill fell victim to the current rise in Covid. This was similar to Beckenham’s last game too. If you are reading these notes then we have managed to get this game played although the uncertainty of the pandemic and Christmas print deadlines means that this programme is exceptionally only available online. It would have been a shame if our Christmas fixture had fallen foul of this dreadful pandemic. Football and Christmas go together like mince pies and brandy sauce. If you are old enough to remember you will know that it used to be that games were played actually on Christmas Day, when did they have their dinner? Indeed it was often double headers with the return fixture being played on Boxing Day. The last time a match was played on Christmas Day was back in the late 1950’s. It would be harder now without public transport.
Peter Smith, Secretary and Vice President There have always been some odd results over “If you are reading the two Christmas games. I remember West these notes then we Ham playing Blackburn Rovers at Upton Park have managed to get and losing 8-2 bit then winning the return game. this game played” This was 1963. Also in 1963 Fulham beat “There have always Ipswich Town 10-1 before losing the return 2 been some odd days later 4-2; whilst Burnley beat Manchester results over the two Unuited 6-1 before losing 1-5 at Old Trafford in Christmas games.” the return fixture. You don’t get results like that these days or perhaps they couldn’t defend! There is going to be a degree of uncertainty as the Omicron variant seems to have taken hold and there is concerns of another lockdown. Hopefully we will not see another interruption to our football. Notwithstanding Covid we are going to see a break her at Mayfield Stadium as after today the next home fixture is not until 5th February. Well I hope you all enjoy the game. Get behind the Rams. On behalf of the Club may I wish you all a very happy New Year.
Kevin Rayner - First Team Manager Rayner “Our recent form A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to has been good and all as we welcome high flying Beckenham we now have most Town, the match officials and everyone to Mayfield players available and Stadium for our Christmas derby and we hope this has been everyone enjoys their day. showing in our recent Our recent form has been good and we now have performances” most players available and this has been showing in “Enjoy the game and our recent performances which have been pleasing. from myself, the We haven’t lost at home since August and the home Management form stacks up well with most sides in the league. team and all the players we wish We’ve picked up five points in our last three games everyone a merry and are unbeaten at home in the League since Christmas ” August and will look to keep that going today. In our last game against Horley Town we should really have seen the game out and needed a fantastic Nahum Green equaliser late on the get a deserved share of the points. We have had the consistency needed after a bout of injuries and suspensions and are now only threatened by Covid as we had it running through the players last week. As I’m writing, before Christmas, most players that were affected will have finished isolating, however, Hermes Mengi had gone down with a positive test so may be missing today.
Kevin Rayner - First Team Manager It’s going to be a really testing time over the next couple of weeks as we saw last week with many games called off due to players being infected. Most clubs will be affected and hopefully ourselves and Beckenham can put on a good game today. Beckenham Town are pushing for promotion and will fancy they can collect a win today although we are now in a much better position than earlier in the season in terms of personnel and I will fancy that we can upset them today. It’s a real must win game for them as the top of the table is getting tight and I would expect Walton & Hersham, Jersey Bulls, Beckenham Town and Raynes Park Vale to be vying for those top 2 positions at the end of the season. Enjoy the game and from myself, the Management team and all the players we wish everyone a merry Christmas and hope to see as many of you as possible in the New Year. Keep the Faith

Round Up of Recent Matches - AFC Croydon Athletic 3 Horley Town 3 Reports AFC Croydon Athletic and Horley Town produced an entertaining pre-Christmas six goal thriller. Six goals, a fight back and a dramatic ending were all part of the action. Once again, the Rams were missing a number of players through injuries, illness and suspensions. At the beginning it was the visitors who were on top and creating chances. Chris Klass was twice called into action to deny both Wyte and Matt Rapson. Then it was the turn of the Rams to have chances. Carl Obiltey fired over the bar and Nahum Green had a shot saved and then he fired a cross across goal, but no one was there. Then on 34 minutes a ball into the Horley box as mishandled by Hyde and the ball bounced around but was put over the line by a defender. Horley hit back and Klass again denied Matt Rapson. On 45 minutes a neat move saw Jermaine Green passed to Nahum Green who set up Luwayne Greenwood who shot clinically past Hyde for 2- 0. The half-time whistle then blew before the re-start. The second half began with Horley looking to get back into the game. It took them just 10 minutes to get back into the game. After the ball bounced around Josh Rapson fired home. Within just 4 more minutes they were level when the Rams defence failed to clear the ball and Roberts score. Both sides were now looking for looking for the winner. On 81 minutes Horley thought they’d found it when Ford raced through beat Klass and scored. The Rams were now chasing the game but in the first minute of added time a cross into the Horley box was partially cleared by Hyde but Nahum Green volleyed the ball back over his shoulder to make it 3-3. As the time ticked by the Rans had once last chance but Joe Nwoko could not convert.
Upcoming Away Travel Road Saturday, 8th January 2022, 3pm kick-off Combined Counties League, Premier Division South v Guildford City At Guildford Spectrum, Parkway, Guildford, GU1 1UP (27 miles) Although the Rams have only made this journey once before it will be a more familiar journey for Manager Kevin Rayner who was the boss at Guildford for several successful seasons including promotion out of the Combined Counties League. The only visit previously was in the Surrey Senior Cup on a cold February evening where the game finished 2-2 before Guildford went through on penalty kicks. Whether you take the journey through Mitcham or head for the M25 you are making your way to the A3 as the direct route to the Spectrum. Once on the A3 head south until you reach the junction marked Guildford/Bagshot (A322), it is also later signposted Leisure Centre, and leave the main road. At the end of the slip road you turn left toward Guildford and then turn left again signposted for the leisure centre. The entrance to Spectrum is on the left at the next set of traffic lights. There is plenty of parking. If coming by train the nearest station is London Road which is about a half hour walk away or from Guildford there are buses or taxis.

Welcome to tonight’s Opponents Town Year Formed: 1971 (current) Club Nickname: The Reds Ground: Eden Park Avenue History (6.1 miles from here) Beckenham Kent BR3 3JL Beckenham Town Football Club is one of the older non-league clubs still in existence, being first affiliated to The Kent Football Association in 1887. Records show the club played in the London League from 1923 to 1933 and 1951 to 1961 and the Aetolian League from 1961 to 1964 before moving to the Greater London League from 1964 to 1969. In addition to its present day participation in the FA Cup and FA Vase, it also competed in the FA Amateur Cup from 1926 to 1967. Amongst the club’s past Presidents is ex-Prime Minster the Rt. Hon Harold Macmillan MP and amongst the club’s Vice Presidents is Sydney Wooderson one of Britain's greatest middle-distance runners. Honours include the London League Championship in 1927-28 and runners-up in 1930-31. Unfortunately, the club folded in 1969 merging with Bromley FC. The club was subsequently re-formed and joined London Spartan League in 1975 and enjoyed some early success being Runners-up to Fisher Athletic in the Spartan League Senior Division in 1977-78. Town also reached two Spartan League Cup Finals, losing to Welling United and Farnham Town. More recent successes have been two previous appearances in the Kent League Cup Final in 1984-85 and 1992-93 and Runners-Up to Maidstone Utd in the Kent League Premier Division in 2005-06.This season, after three previous unsuccessful attempts in 1981-82,2004/05 and 2007/08, finally victory in the Kent Senior Trophy after a 4-0 win over Ashford Utd at Longmead Stadium in April. In July 1980 Beckenham moved from Stanhope Grove to their present ground in Eden Park Avenue joining the Kent League in 1982-83. In 2003 Beckenham were awarded £100,000 by the Football Foundation for ground improvements which enabled the ground to become enclosed and their award winning pitch along with a drainage system to be laid Amongst Becks ex-players are goalkeeper Ray Potter who played over 220 games for West Bromwich Albion , Frank “Dot” Morris who played over 70 games for Crystal Palace and Pat Saward who played for Aston Villa in the 50’s and captained The Republic of Ireland. More recently ex-Charlton Athletic star Jason Euell wore Beckenham’s colours.

That game would finish with Horley winning a 5-goal thriller in a game that could have gone either way. After a difficult start to the season Horley have gone from strength to strength and find themselves lying in 6th place in the League table. Their recent form reflects that position having lost just once in their last six outings. But recent form has been better than the Rams current league position so it could be another interesting encounter.
