Peter Smith, Club Secretary Secretary Good afternoon to you all. We extend a very warm season. That could be very interesting especially if welcome to today’s visitors, Deal Town. We hope they need points for promotion but also have the all connected with them have a pleasant afternoon Vase final on the horizon, and a safe journey home. We extend the same welcome to the match officials and to anyone here Two questions come to mind, firstly, who do I for the first time as well as our regular supporters. think will go up? And, who would I like to go up? We are getting near to the end of the season and it’s My answer to question 1 is Beckenham and very interesting at the top of the SCEFL table. To Corinthian. I choose these because Beckenham me it looks a four-horse race. Beckenham, have the points while Corinthian have been the Corinthian, Chatham and Sheppey are the main most consistent of the teams. My answer to contenders. Tunbridge Wells and Hollands & Blair question 2 is Sheppey and of the other challengers have, I think, only an outside chance of gate maybe I go for Corinthian because they’ve been crashing the party although Tunbridge do have consistent. games in hand. But with 16 games to play fatigue could hamper their chances. We will see and don’t laugh at me when my predictions all go totally wrong. Corinthian are in a very good position with games in hand but their success in the FA Vase could Enjoy the game. make it difficult. Surely the thought of the chance of playing a cup final at the iconic Wembley Stadium must be on their minds and the question to be answered is will it affect their performances. Will players think twice about going for 50/50 challenges? We played Beckenham last week and although we lost 0-4 I didn’t think that was reflective of play, however, that is just one game and maybe I saw things through maroon eyes! In fact in the coming weeks we play Sheppey, Chatham and Corinthian. The first two at home, and, we visit Corinthian on the last day of the

Kevin Rayner - First Team Manager Rayner Good afternoon to all and today we welcome Deal getting game time and some have put in great Town and everyone attending the Mayfield performances and will remain in the squad as we Stadium for our League game today. look to next year. Last week at Beckenham Town we played well only to concede two quick goals It’s great to be back home for a couple of weeks and then two late goals in what was quite a good after a couple of miserable results and appearing to game and the scoreline flattered Beckenham. be away forever! We have a good set of home games remaining as we will look to gather some Last Saturday due to injuries and unavailability we points and stabilise our league position. somehow managed to get 13 players to Lordswood with several players making their debut. Five We have not been at full strength for a few weeks players dropped out on the morning of the game and the match squads have had a lot of youngsters leaving us with an impossible task getting in replacements. Sam Faulkner, Martin Younger and Sam Gregoire all made league debuts as we had 11 squad players missing and only 3 senior players available. The boys put in a good performance and a really young side led 1 0 at the break but couldn’t hold out conceding two very late goals. I can’t moan at the results as we have played well but the lack of senior boys had cost us a point or two. We need to ensure we put out as strong a side as possible over the next few weeks and today we welcome goalkeeper Ash Davey and returning today from injury/missing last week Kazzeem Richards, Liam Harwood, Dammy Bada, Liam Coates, Jack Clarke, Nahum Green, Dan Hunwick which should place us with a much stronger squad and look to compete and pick up points. Deal Town will be a tough fixture and they will also be looking to add points to the league tally so we can expect a good game and a tough encounter

A two-leg tie against Hebburn Town for a place at Wembley Stadium. FA Introduce New Guidance for Heading The FA has introduced new guidance for youth and junior players with regard to heading in training, this follows a study commissioned between the FA and the PFAthat was conducted last year. Although there was no evidence in the FIELD study to suggest that heading the ball was the cause to the link with incidence of degenerative neurocognitive disease, to mitigate against any potential risks, the updated Heading Guidance has been produced in parallel with UEFA’s Medical Committee, which is seeking to publish Europe-wide guidelines later this year. The Irish FA and the Scottish FA will also adopt the same Heading Guidance. The updated Heading Guidance includes: • Heading Guidance in training for all age groups between Under 6 and Under 18 • No heading in training in the foundation phase [primary school children] • Graduated approach to heading training for children in the development phase between Under 12 to Under 16 • Required ball sizes for training and matches for each age group • No changes to heading in matches, taking into consideration the limited number of headers in youth games

Meet Today’s Opponents Town Year Formed: 1908 Club Nickname: The Hoops Ground: Charles Sports Ground St Leonards Road Deal CT14 9AU History Originally known as Deal Cinque Ports FC the club was formed in the early 1900s, changing its’ name in 1920 to Deal Town FC. Deals’ first matches were played in the Thanet League and the East Kent League. Deal were elected into the Southern League in 1969, but after a torrid three seasons they moved onto the Greater London League. The 1971/72 season saw the club return to the Kent League. Deals’ first, Kent League Championship came in 1953/54, then after a long wait, the second was achieved in 1999/2000. They have been Runners-up on two occasions, 1988/89 and 1998/99. The club has reached the Kent League Cup Final on five occasions. The club has made four appearances in the Kent Senior Trophy Final. Deal were beaten finalists in 1982/83 going down to Southern League Fisher Athletic. There was further heartbreak in the 1990/91 Final this time having to settle for second best against Hythe Town. However it was a case of third time lucky in 1994/95 as Deal finally captured the Trophy defeating Folkestone Invicta in a penalty shoot-out following a 2-2 draw. 1999/2000 saw Deal lift the trophy for the second time when they beat Chatham 5-1. Another trophy to come the way of the club was the Greater London League Cup which they won in 1967/68, meanwhile in 1959/60 Deal finished as Aetolian League Runners-up. 1997 saw the appointment of a new Chairman in Roy Smith whose ambitions both on and off the field lifted the Club, and his deci- sion to appoint a full time manager in Tommy Sampson for the beginning of the 1998 season soon bore fruit. 1998/99 saw the Club achieve their best season. This was however surpassed the following season. As well as their domestic achievements, Deal Town become the 1st team from Kent to lift the FA Vase with their 1-0 victory at Wembley Stadium against Chippenham Town in front of a crowd of 20,083, the second biggest in the history of the competition. Albie Barker took over the reins until he resigned in January 2014 to be replaced by Paul Murray. Paul stood down to be replaced by Darren Anslow for the start of the 2014/15 campaign, only for him to resign in early September and be replaced by Dave Johncock. Dave was replaced in January 2015 by Derek Hares with Paul Murray as his assistant and Steve King as coach. Paul resigned for the start of the 2016/17 sea- son. Season 2015/16 saw us finish in 9th position in the table, a top half finish, an improvement on previ- ous seasons where we have struggled as a bottom half team for over ten years. We had a very good run in the FA Cup, finally losing out to St Albans in the 2nd Qualifying round 1-2 away, having beaten Horsham and Whitstable on the way. We also had a good run in the FA Vase before losing to a strong Kidlington side in Oxfordshire. All in all a good season both on and off the pitch with our new Clubhouse up and running. 2016/17 saw us finally finish in 13th position after struggling near the bottom of the table until the last few months of the season.

It is a busy day at Mayfield tomorrow with three of our teams in action. The U16s get under way at 10am with a tough game against Bromley U16 who in 9th place in the league. The U16s are sitting in 3rd place in the league and there is still all to play for despite losing their first league game last Sunday. Second up is the U14 Eagles. They host Bromleians United U14s. The U14s are sitting in 2nd place in the League and will be looking to solidify that position with a win tomorrow. Finally, the U13 Hawks have a bottom v top clash as they host Oxted & District. The visitors sit on top of the table whilst the Hawks are still looking for their first win of the season in the League. Our Hawks are pictured opposite. All our Junior teams would welcome support and if you want to come and check out the stars of the future you can do so tomorrow. The Clubhouse is also open with drinks and hot food.
