Peter Smith, Secretary and Vice President Secretary Good afternoon to you all. We extend a very warm welcome to all connected Canterbury City. We hope you enjoy your short stay with us and have a safe return journey. We also extend a warm to today’s match officials. If this is your first visit to Mayfield Stadium we welcome you and hope you enjoy the experience. Well we are a few weeks into the season and it’s not gone to plan, has it. Two cup defeats and, only 1 point from our league matches. I was hoping for more. I’m sure Kevin and his management team are equally disappointed with the results and they will be working very hard to put things right. I know injuries are part and parcel of the game but when you have a run of injuries to players who play in the same or similar positions it is very disruptive and stops you putting out a settled side. On Saturday at Wick we were missing up to nine players who would either start or be part of the playing squad. That means we had almost a complete team unavailable although with some being the same positions this is not quite true but it does give the manager a big headache.

Peter Smith, Secretary and Vice President Football has changed, we all know. When I was “I’m sure Kevin and a lad I could name almost every team in the first his management Division, as it was then. Now that is impossible team are equally and even in the non-league rotation is part and disappointed with parcel of the modern game. But in our case we the results” have just 3 players who have played all the “Enjoy the game, games the side has played. It is a nightmare. observe the rules and stay safe. ” Any sport is about consistency and with team games the more settled selections you have the better. Defenders and attackers thrive on knowing their partners’ game but you only get that by playing together. Let us hope the situation will improve and we can get a settled side and then hopefully the results will improve and we can climb the league. There are some new rules in place for today’s game following the changes to the Government’s guidance. It any of these measure cause inconvenience then we are sorry but we ask you to comply with all the instructions. Enjoy the game, observe the rules and stay safe. See you here for our next home game with Beckenham Town on the 6th.

Kevin Rayner - First Team Manager Rayner “I’ve never known Good afternoon to you all and today we welcome anything like our Canterbury City FC and everyone attending the injury list which is Mayfield Stadium for our League game today. certainly keeping Denis busy ” It’s great to be back home after a couple of away “All three have games in which we lost and again had numerous experience at a changes due to injuries. higher level of football and will We tried to keep the game tight at Erith which give us a boost ” worked for a while but gave away two poor goals to get beaten and in the FA Vase we hit the self- destruct button as we should have won the game but had two players sent off and played the last 15 minutes with 9 players. We did well with 9 and went for it still with a 242 formation which created three great chances which we didn’t take. I’ve never known anything like our injury list which is certainly keeping Denis busy and hopefully we will gradually get players back. I have had to draft in a few players this week as a couple of injuries are long term and we need to get some senior players in to strengthen the squad. We had 9 players missing at Wick FC last Saturday and it’s not an excuse but we have only had two players that have completed all of the games so far this season. I’m fed up moaning about our missing players but unfortunately it hasn’t helped our start this year..

Kevin Rayner - First Team Manager Still we move on, we have a few back today as Liam Harwood, Jack Clarke, Jack Marney and Khalid Babikir return from injury and we welcome 3 new attacking players. Scott Egheghe, who made his debut at Wick, Timmy Babington and Billy Murphy are in the squad for today. All three have experience at a higher level of football and will give us a boost with the other players returning. The only negative being the two red cards ruling out Kazzeem Richards and Nahum Green. Nahum had equalled the clubs playing record last Saturday with is 146th appearance and I’m sure he will break that on his return. In these uncertain times its great to get out and watch football at our level and I hope that today we can be spurred on to gain a valuable 3 points. Enjoy the game and thank you for your support and stay safe.

Before today’s game there have been contrasting starts with the Wells having won 3 out of 3 in the league and sitting in second place. They play league leaders, Welling Town, today and will be looking to continue their run. The last visit to the Culverden Stadium was October of last year also on a Tuesday night. Dominic Ogun scored for the Rams but they lost 1-3. Getting to Culverden Stadium by car from Croydon should see you take the M25 anti-clockwise before joining the A21. Follow the road through Hildenbrough toward Tonbridge before picking up the A26 toward Tunbridge Wells. Follow this road until you turn right into Culverden Down which you then follow to the ground. Meet Today’s Opponents City Year Formed: 2007 (current) Club Nickname: City Ground: Salters Lane Faversham Kent, ME5 8ND History Canterbury City was revived in 2007 after folding in 2000-01. They were the first football club in the country to be formed as a Community Interest Company and won promotion from the Kent County League Division II (East) in their first season. Although for some fifty years there were various versions of a City club, it was not until 1947 that a truly representative one came about. For many years they played in the Kent League, the Southern League, and the Metropolitan League which they joined in 1958, finishing third and guaranteeing promotion to the Southern League Division One. During the 1960s City twice reached the first round of the FA Cup. In 1963-64 they lost 6-0 at home to Torquay United before a club record crowd of 3,001 and in 1968-69 they went to Swindon and, by all accounts, were unlucky to lose 1-0. During the early 1970s they struggled in the Southern Division and by the early 1990s they were also in financial trouble. They returned to the Kent League and although initially doing well, they finally finished bottom in two consecutive seasons and folded Under the management of Ben Smith/Ada Gower, and coach Darren Beale, City’s 2015/16 season produced their best league position finish since reforming, 8th, and also had their longest ever run in the FA Vase. In 2016/17, Tim Dixon joined the management team as Assistant to Ben Smith, and Darren continued as coach. A disappointing start to the season was turned around by much better form including an unbeaten run of 12 games, scoring 33 and conceding only 8. City finished 9th with 58 points, and had the 4th best defensive record in the League. Their home ground of Kingsmead Stadium has now been re-developed for housing but the Canterbury City Council is working with the club to provide a brand new “Football Hub” in the City which it is hoped will become the football club’s home. For the 2017-18 season they played home games at Deal Town FC and finished mid-table in 10th place. For 2018-19 the club played at Faversham whilst a location for a home ground continued to be worked on behind the scenes. Ben Smith led the side to a 9th placed finish but the huge positive of the campaign was a stunning FA Vase run that only ended at the semi-final stage when coming up just short to Cray Valley PM. The 2019/20 was a turbulent one with Management changes followed by the Coronovirus Pandemic which declared the season null and void with just a few weeks to go. We go again in 2020/21 looking to continue to push the club forward.

Tony Ford U18 League, East Division AFC Croydon Athletic U18 v Croydon U18 At Mayfield Stadium Monday 28th September 2020, ko 7.30pm Admission £3 Covid 19 Track and Trace applies to all attendees Ryan Frasers’ U18s kicked off their season with an FA Youth Cup tie that turned into a close encounter at Mayfield Stadium with Faversham Town U18s finally winning with the only goal of the game. It was always going to be a tough encounter and so it proved but the players performed well and although they find themselves out of the competition they are, nevertheless, looking forward to getting into league action and it will be another difficult game as they take on Croydon.

AFC Croydon Athletic and K&R Sports Academy Development The new season has got underway for our teams in the Tandridge Youth League after a full set of games last Sunday. A pleasing set of results and performances were pleasing but most important of all is seeing our young players enjoying their football again after six months off. With so many new teams it is difficult to know where to start. Our youngest team, the U8 had an exciting home game and a 10-goal thriller before they managed to run-out 6-4 winners. At the other end of the age group our U15s also managed a win with a 5-0 victory over The Warren. They continue their season with a home game against Sanderstead Juniors tomorrow and that game will take place on the Stadium pitch with a 11am kick-off. Our biggest win last Sunday was an 8-1 victory for U13 Hawks who started their Premier Division campaign at Bromley. Our U13 Stars also had a big victory with a 7-3 win also on their travels. Apart from our U15s we also have a full programme of games on our training pitches. They get underway at 10am and will see the U9 Eagles, U10 Eagles, U11 Rams, U12 Eagles, U13 Hawks, U13 Stars and U14 Falcons all have home games. Over the page you will see a selection of league tables. Tables are only published for U12s and above and goal difference isn’t used to separate teams on the same points.
