Waveplate Polarizing Optic ─Waveplate OverviewPolarizer WaveplateDepolarizer Waveplate OverviewBrewster Window Waveplates (retarders) are made from birefringent materials θ which introduce a phase difference between the fast and slow Optical Axis Quartz Polarization principal axis of the waveplate. The optical axis of waveplate is 2θRotator parallel to the face. Light incident normal to the surface will be split to components polarized parallel and perpendicular to the 45oOptical Isolator optical axis with different refractive index and velocity in this Optical Axis device. The difference in velocities gives rise to a phase shift Lateral Displacement which is called retardance. At any specific wavelength thePolarization Beamsplitter phase retardance is governed by the thickness of Waveplates. The standard waveplates we provided include half waveplates and quarter waveplates, other custom waveplates can also be provided upon request. Half Waveplate When applying a linearly polarized beam to a half waveplate, it emerges as a linearly polarized beam but its polarization plane is rotated with respect to the polarization plane of the input beam. The rotation of the polarization plane is such that the angle between the input polarization and the output polarization is twice the angle between the input polarization and the waveplate's axis. When applying a circularly polarized beam, a clockwise circular polarization will transform into a counter-clockwise circular polarization and vice versa. Half waveplates are often used as continuously adjustable polarization rotators and as a variable ratio beamsplitter when used in conjunction with a polarization beamsplitter cube. Quarter Waveplate When applying a linearly polarized beam with the polarization plane aligned at 45deg to the waveplate's principal plane, the output beam will be circularly polarized. Similarly when applying a circularly polarized beam to a λ/4 waveplate the output beam will be linearly polarized. When a quarter waveplate is double passed, i.e. by mirror reflection, it acts as a half waveplate and rotates the plane of polarization to a certain angle. A depolarizer will change Depolarizerthe plane polarization into a mix of polarization states by scrambling up the polarization, the result is to change planepolarized beam into pseudo-depolarized beam and produce depolarization. Depolarizer is widely used in polarizationsensitive instrument.Union Optic’s quartz wedge depolarizer consists of two 3° wedges of crystal quartz. Usual wedge depolarizer consists ofone crystal quartz wedge and a compensation fused silica to avoid big beam deviation, but the deviation is also very big forsome precise instruments. Union Optic does not use fused silica plate to compensate the beam deviation, we use a crystalquartz plate with its optical axis along the propagation direction. Because the depolarizer is constructed by same material,so the beam deviation can be much better. The usual depolarizer can only be used at narrow band wavelength to avoid thebig beam deviation. With our special design, our depolarizer can be used in a wide range of wavelength and keep thebeam deviation in an acceptable range.When a beam hits on the depolarizer, there is a variable phase shift across the beam aperture on the wedge, so apolarized beam can be effectively depolarized. Quartz wedge depolarizer can work well with monochromatic andbroadband light source.Usually we can get better result if we orient the input polarization state 45deg to the optical axis ofthe depolarizer. Regarding monochromatic light, we can only get good pseudo-random polarization when the input diameter is bigger than 6mm. The minimum beam diameter requirement comes from that randomization of the output beam's polarization is achieved by producing a spatial variation when the light hits on the wedge surface. Regarding a broadband source, it does not have the same beam diameter restriction because of the wavelength dependent retardation and also spatial variation.
