UNIT 2ANIMALS DOG The dog is a domestic animal. Its baby is called a puppy. It lives in a kennel. It guards our house. It barks at strangers. It has a good sense of smell. CAMEL Camels are found in deserts. People travel on a camel in the desert. A camel can walk on sand. It can stay without water for a long time. It is called the ‘Ship of the Desert’. CHEETAH The cheetah has strong legs for running and hunting. It is the fastest animal in the world. 10 BOOK ONE

The elephant is a wild animal. It is a herbivorous animal. It eats leaves, twigs, bamboo and roots. It is the biggest land animal. It lives in the jungle. It has a long trunk and two tusks. ELEPHANT FROG Frogs are insect eating animal. The young ones of frogs are called tadpoles. The ostrich is the largest of all birds. It lays the largest egg. It cannot fly. It can run fast. GIRAFFE The giraffe is the tallest land animal. It has a long tongue. It can clean its ears with its tongue. It is good at kicking. It can kick so hard that it can kill a lion. CHIMPANZEE Chimpanzees are very intelligent animals. They also have got good communication skills as humans do. DANPHE Danphe is the national bird of Nepal. It is about 70 centimeters long. Porcupines are small animals with long spines. Spines protect them from enemies. They can expel spines when attacked. PORCUPINE Dolphins have two stomachs, one for storing food and one for digesting it. An adult dolphin may eat 15 kg of fish or more in a single day. DOLPHIN KANGAROO The kangaroo has a pouch. A baby kangaroo lives in a pouch. A baby kangaroo is called a joey. You can see a kangaroo in Australia. BOOK ONE 13

The blue whale is the largest of all animals. It is as long as two trucks. It is also the noisiest animal. BLUE WHALE The humming bird is the smallest bird. It is about 5 cm long. It is the only bird that can fly backwards. It is also able to fly up and down. It can also fly side wise. HUMMING BIRD The leather back is the world’s biggest turtle. RHINOCEROS The rhinoceros is also called rhino. Its name means ‘nose horn’. It is a plant eater. It has three toes on each foot. It has one or two horns. In Nepal, one horned rhinos are found. SHARK Sharks are the biggest fish in the world. They eat small fish and seals. Baby sharks are called pups. Sharks never run out of teeth. If one is lost, another comes out.
