Unit 2 ANIMALS CATS Cats are popular pets in the world. A group of cats is called a clowder. A male cat is called a tom. A female cat is called a molly or queen. Young cats are called kittens. CAMEL A camel can walk on sand and stay without water for a long time. So it is called the ‘Ship of the Desert’. It may have one or two humps. Its humps stores fatty tissues that change into water when its body gets dry. SHEEP Sheep have very good memories. They can remember at least 50 individual sheep and humans for years. 14 BOOK TWO

YAKS Yaks are the only domestic animals, which survive in the high Himalayan region. They are pack animals for the expeditions to Mount Everest. The animals that carry loads are called pack animals. PEACOCK The peacock is a beautiful animal. It is one of the largest flying birds. Its male is called peacock and the female is called peahen. It is omnivorous. It eats both plants and animals. ELEPHANT The elephant is the biggest land animal. It has a long trunk and two tusks. Its trunk is able to sense the size, shape and temperature of an object. BOOK TWO 15

HIPPOPOTAMUS Hippopotamuses are heavy animals. They are the third largest land mammals. The word ‘hippopotamus’ means ‘river house’. Hippos love to live in water. BLUE WHALE The largest animal in the world is the blue whale. It is almost as big as the nine elephants standing in a row. It can reach 100 feet in length and 150 tons in weight. TADPOLES Tadpoles are baby frogs. They look more like fish than frogs. They have long tails and breathe through gills. They use their tails for swimming. When they grow up, they lose their tails and develop lungs for breathing. 16 BOOK TWO

FROG Frogs are amphibians. Amphibians can live both on land and in water. They have strong hind legs for jumping. They have short front legs. They use their tongue to catch and swallow food. Frogs don’t drink water; they absorb it through their skin. GORILLAS Gorillas are so afraid of water that they do not even drink it. The gorilla is the largest of all monkeys. When it is angry, it beats its chest to frighten its enemies. WALRUS Walruses have two long tusks. They use their tusks to pull their huge body out of ice. They also use their tusks to break ice. KING COBRAS King cobras are the only snakes that build nests for their young on the ground. King cobras are the longest venomous snakes in the world. The average male can grow to 18 feet long. HUMMING BIRD The humming bird is the smallest bird. It is about 5 cm long. It is the only bird that can fly backwards. Like a helicopter, it is also able to fly up and down. It can also fly side wise. RHINOCEROS The rhinoceros is also called rhino. It is a plant eater. It has very thick and hard skin. It may have one horn or two horns. It has three toes on each foot. In Nepal, one horned rhinos are found. Its horn is very expensive and it is usually hunted for its horn. 18 BOOK TWO

RABBIT One thing that makes a rabbit such an interesting and special pet is that the domestic rabbits behave just like wild ones. TIGRESS In a tiger family, the female tiger is called a tigress. A tigress gives birth to the young ones and looks after them. OSTRICH The ostrich is the largest bird in the world. It also lays the largest eggs. Its egg needs to be boiled for 2 hours to get a hard- boiled egg. BOOK TWO 19

Unit 3 PLANTS PITCHER PLANT The pitcher plant is a carnivorous plant. It eats small insects and animals as food. The plant has an attractive smell that helps it to easily catch its prey. RAFFLESIA The rafflesia is the world’s largest flower. It is found in Indonesia. It is as big as a truck wheel. It is also known as the monster flower. It has five blood red petals. It smells like a rotten egg. ARCTIC POPPY The beautiful arctic poppy grows in very cold places. The flower is cup-shaped. The stems are hairy. It has a single flower on each stem. 30 BOOK TWO

NEEM The neem tree is a medicinal plant. Its parts are used to make different kinds of medicine. It is a fast growing tree that can reach a height of 15-20 m. BAMBOO The bamboo is the fastest growing plant. It can grow up to 3 feet in height in 24 hours. Largest species of bamboo can reach 1300 feet in height. It absorbs more carbon dioxide than other plants. JACKFRUIT Jackfruit is a huge tree. It is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world. The fruits are green when they are not ripe. PINE TREE The pine tree is just one member of the big tree family known as conifers. The tree is best known for its cones and lovely needles. It is an evergreen tree as its needles stay green all year long. APPLE Apples are the fruits of apple trees. Apples are large if they are grown from seeds, but small if gratified from roots. BITTER GOURD A bitter gourd is also called a bitter melon. Its taste is bitter. It is one of the popular vegetables in Nepal and India. It is rich in vitamins. 32 BOOK TWO

LITHOP Lithop is an amazing plant. It can be simply described as a living stone. It exactly looks like a stone or pebble. TOUCH ME NOT The touch me not or mimosa pudica is a sensitive plant. The most interesting thing about this plant is that its leaves fold up at night as well as by touch. COCONUT The coconut is a useful plant. Almost all its parts are useful.
