Kia OraHere is some basic programme information for theBachelor in Applied Arts programme that is beingdelivered at NorthTec’s Whangarei arts precinct,Toi Te Pito.Bachelor of Applied Arts(Visual or Digital Arts)This three-year visual arts degree providesopportunities to work in 2D, 3D and Digital Arts.It is distinctive in its emphasis on research-basedpractice and the interdisciplinary connectionsthat are developed throughout all aspects of theprogramme.The students gain the ability to explore a widevariety of artistic techniques including drawing intermedia sculpture ceramics printmaking photography graphic design digital artsStudents will use theory, practice, industryexperience and project work to continuedeveloping as creative lateral-thinking problemsolvers in a wide range of artistic fields.

Students will develop an awarenessof how art is influenced by changing context (i.e. culture, politics, economics, technology, and ideas).Pacific Studies 51002This course introduces students to the history, culture and art of Pacific people. Students will develop anawareness of issues relating to the use of Pacific imagery in contemporary art and design. The course aimsto encourage an awareness and appreciation of cultural difference.Drawing and the Creative Process 51012The focus of this course is on the development of students’ personal concepts using drawing and thecreative process. Students will develop their concepts, using drawing and selected media, into a body ofwork.Approaches to Drawing 51011The focus of this course is on students’ development of a broad awareness of historical and contemporarydrawing practice. Students will explore and develop drawing skills and techniques which will form a strongfoundation for extending individual practice.

(You will need your own digital camera for this course. ENTRY REQUIREMENTSApplicants (under 20 years old require)• NCEA level 3 with University Entrance including at least: • 14 credits in art, design or an art-related subject; and• A portfolio.Applicants aged 20 years or over require demonstrated commitment through aportfolio of 12-20 artworks (or images of them) and interview.Applicants for whom English is not their first language require a minimum IELTS scoreof 6.0 with no band 5.5 or equivalent.If you do not meet the entry requirements for the Bachelor of Applied Arts you mayconsider applying for the Certificate in Art and Design that will transition you into theBachelor programme. If you are requiring Recognition of Prior Learning or Cross Creditfrom other courses this can be discussed at the interview stage.
COSTSThe fees are approximately $6,800 incl. GST per full-time year of study.Unlike many other arts programmes all the basic materials for classes andfield trips are provided by your materials fee. It is expected there will alsobe specific materials that you will want to purchase for yourself.Photography: You will need to own a suitable camera to studyphotography. Contact the photography department for further details.Courses and programmes may be cancelled, postponed or have their content or configuration changed from time to time (includingduring the academic year) at the discretion of NorthTec.
