GRADUATE PROFILE - Joshua Bradshaw \"My interest in drawing and art led me to take a gap year to save money before I started studying, knowing this would be a big step. I chose to do the Bachelor of Applied Arts (BAA) because it meant I could stay with my family and begin my career as a creative graphic designer.\" \"I chose NorthTec because of the convenience of having a degree opportunity based in Whangārei in the field I wanted to work in. My favourite thing about NorthTec was the tutors - not only are they helping you learn but they get to know you. The support from them was the best experience because they consistently pushed me to do better. \"It was great to meet the amazing artists that spoke at our artist talks too.\" \"The BAA was the first step towards my career and has been foundational in terms of applying the skills I have learnt to my current career. I intend on enrolling in a Master of Design.\" \"Since graduating from the BAA, I am working as a Graphic Designer and I intent to con- tinue in this field. In the long term, my dream position would be a Creative Design Direc- tor in a major company, leading projects with a large team!\"
\"You don't need to go far to do well, but you do need to put in the effort wherever you do go.\"

GRADUATE PROFILE - Paora Tiatoa I had been painting houses for 10 years, then one day I saw an ad for NorthTec in the news- paper and so I applied. Here I am – an artist 9 years later! The best aspects of studying for me were my classmates and the tutors, without either for me, it would have been nothing. The standout of my time at NorthTec was learning new things that took me outside my comfort zone, the field trips and the photography darkroom. There were many challenges during my study. I was dealing with the good the bad and the ugly during the time I was at NorthTec and my study gave me a glimpse of hope. The main surprise for me was switching from an abstract painting medium to printmaking. I then combined my love of both to create abstract contemporary art. I am still learning about myself within my practice. In my last year of study I came across a Māori hair comb (Heru) that belongs to the British Museum. The Heru stars in my portfolio of work and I want to be part of a group to one day bring it home to Aotearoa. I can only be visible by producing new work. No work no change. In 2019, my work led me to feature in a documentary filmed by a Spanish film crew from Madrid. They paid me too! I also received a grant to start a new website, so I know the best is yet to come. My advice to aspiring artists is: Being an artist and being in the art world to try make a living are two totally different things. Be true to yourself - no matter what - even if your friends, family, haters and lovers don’t understand you. If you can’t be true to yourself, what can you really be true to? Where there’s a no there’s a yes, eventually. Search, seek out the internal shift within yourself to become a higher version of yourself as an artist. Finally, art is fun. If it’s not fun it’s not worth it.

“Committing to study gave me the opportunity to contemplate things that mattered to me and gave me the confidence to rediscover what I was good at.\"
GRADUATE PROFILE - Megan Dickinson Director & Curator at MD Gallery “Twenty years ago I had the idea to open a gallery but I put it aside until now. I opened the MD Gallery in downtown Whangārei in mid-2017, and for me it’s all about curating. I’ve been cu- rating since I was a child. I worked as a florist and taught floristry for 15 years but I wanted to curate art. Deciding to complete a degree in Applied Arts was a real turning point for me. “The tutors were practising artists themselves with solid reputations and they were beyond ded- icated in sharing their wealth of knowledge and experience. When I finished the degree in 2014 I went into recovery mode for a while, then I entered the Corban’s Art Awards and won second place in the sculpture section. That reawoke my creativity. “At around that time I started work at The Shutter Room as a curator and was there for a couple of years. I exhibited some of my own photograms (photos made without a camera) and installa- tions there. The transition from The Shutter Room to running my own gallery was prompted by turning 50. It was an ‘if not now…when?’ moment, so I started looking for premises and found this high-foot-traffic site in Rust Ave. Over 2 years on and I am still loving it.\" “I curate both group and solo shows here, mostly for Whangārei artists, ranging from emerging to established. There’s been a gap in Whangārei for a fine art gallery space and I’m now provid- ing that space. I’m into making connections between the viewer and artist, and showing viewers how to hang a mix of photographs, paintings and prints together. \"Looking forward now, I aim to build my client base locally, nationally and internationally.\"
