UPDATES: STAAR STAAR test NEXT WEEK!!! Please reference calendar on the third page of this newsletter to understand who is testing when. STAAR test is occurring the first and second week of May. Campuses have preparing assessments, teachers have been preparing students. WE GOT THIS! You have worked diligently with students to prepare them, assist in closing gaps and ensuring that each and every student makes progress. We are proud of the work that you have done and we know our students are ready to SHOW WHAT THEY KNOW! We have purchased a SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW BOOKMARKER, pencil and bracelet for each student participating in the STAAR test. Teacher will be provided with these items (1 per student) on the first day of each grade level/content test. Your campus will be providing snacks and water each day the students test. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO AND ALL YOU’VE DONE TO ENSURE OUR STUDENTS MAKE PROGRESS THIS YEAR! FAILURE RATES/CREDIT RECOVERY: Principals received the number of failure rates per content/per grade level, as well as student names, by content. Principals have reviewed this information with teachers to determine recommendations for summer school and credit recovery opportunities. Each teacher/campus should be working on credit recovery opportunities for students. Please continue to support your students and their academic needs to ensure that they meet success this year. We want to be able to capture as many students as we can through the credit recovery process. SUMMER SCHOOL Summer School will be held from June 8-29, with a professional development/preparation day scheduled for June 6 for summer school coordinators and June 7 for summer school teachers/staff and coordinators. Summer school will once again focus on Reading/Math and EOCs. Summer School employees will be notified of employment no later than May 18 (if not sooner). Principals will continue to work with teachers to monitor the credit recovery process and the number of students needing to attend summer school. Student summer school applications were distributed the week of April 25, 2020. Teachers were to contact parents to inform them of student qualification for summer school (tentative based on what student progress was made during credit recovery opportunities in April/May). Parents are to return summer school applications as they receive and complete but no later than May 14 (for planning purposes). If you are interested in working summer school, please submit applications by the end of April. CURRICULUM WRITING Curriculum writing has been scheduled from July 11-14 and July 18-21 from 8:00-12:00. We are looking forward to our continued work to improve our pacing guides and curriculum for your use. This summer we are wanting to continue to build on the pacing guides to include resources and assessments to allow for ease of planning and preparation for next year. Curriculum writing applications will be distributed in mid May and due no later than the end of May.
UPDATES: (con’t) DENTAL KITS KISD received a donation from the Masonic Temple Lodge for Dental Kits for all 1st grade students. We are very grateful for this donation and happy to pass it on to our students to help them with their continued Dental Hygiene Practice. A healthy mind starts with a healthy Body. Many thanks to our KISD Nursing Staff for facilitating this process!
UPDATES: (con’t) CPR - SENIOR GRADUATION REQUIREMENT In the past few weeks our HM King HS Seniors participated in CPR training to fulfill a graduation requirement. Training consisted of watching a video on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and a hands on opportunity. Thank you to all who supported this endeavor to ensure our seniors receive this graduation requirement. TEAMWORK WORKS!!!
UPDATES: (con’t) SPOTLIGHT FEATURE
UPDATES: (con’t) SPOTLIGHT FEATURE An instructional teacher coach works with teachers to improve the quality of their lessons and the quality of students’ education. They serve as mentors and role models, helping teachers use the latest techniques and technologies in their classrooms. ITCs attend professional development monthly to develop their practice to support teachers in the classroom.
“Student outcomes don’t change until adult behaviors change.” -A.J. Crabill, Texas Education Agency Deputy Commissioner for Governance “The only reason you get drafted or even looked at by the NFL is because they believe you can play at the next level...if they believe I can do that, you know I believe I can do it.” — Robert Griffin III It is NFL draft week, and even if you are not a football fan, I would encourage you to watch at least the first round. The thrill on the faces of the athletes and family as names are called makes you smile. Educators have the power to make each student feel like a first-round draft pick. Educators are the ones cheering on their students, encouraging them to continue, and making the student believe in themselves. As we near the end of the spring semester, continue to build your students up so they can believe in themselves!
