SSRVM Magazine Bengaluru East March 2022 Principal’s Message STORY OF A CLIMBER There were 2 girls – twins and both were very meticulous in putting sincere efforts but one was topping and the other was very average -- scoring just pass. Hence, she was constantly being compared to her sister who was a topper. The sister always felt bad because, she knew the efforts her twin was putting in to achieve, but the teachers failed to understand her. One day, the science teacher gave them an assignment on plants. The talented twin did the project in an interesting way. She completed the project and wrote an essay on the title ‘Climber and Creeper’ as follows. In a garden there were two climbers. One climber plant was fortunate, as it was growing next to a pillar and hence it climbed on easily without any difficulty. While the other climber plant was not fortunate enough as it did not have any support. The other climber was struggling as dogs came and slept on it, stamped it etc. The climber started feeling very low and disappointed. Things were continuing the same until one little girl saw this and identified that there was something that she could do to help the plant grow. She identified the plant as a climber and she immediately arranged for a pole, and in no time the climber plant began to climb and grew to its full potential bearing fruits and flowers. The little girl knew, all the climber needed was a little support and encouragement and it would also eventually climb up the ladder. As the twin sister read out the story, the students applauded. The teacher had a tear in her eye and hugged the twin for opening her eyes. As teachers and parents, we have to keep in mind that each child is unique. We have to work on strategies to cater to different types of learners, provide moral support for them to identify their strength and help them to succeed. SSRVM Magazine Bengaluru East March 2022 Editor’s Corner: Learners need endless feedback more than endless teaching!!! Learning happens when students are given opportunities to build upon previous knowledge and experiences. It is an approach by which students are evaluated for their learning. It also acts as a pathway to enhance their skills for learning and motivate them to perform better. It provides them a chance to interact with their teachers, peers to understand and find a wide range of resources to make learning more effective. There are various activities that a teacher and the management should keep in mind to make assessment an interesting process. It is advised that we follow the same to make students get out of the exam fear and work happily towards the assessment. • It should be based on syllabus outcomes and HOTS questions to be part of the assessment to initiate critical thinking skills. • It should include a criterion to help students clarify and understand what aspects of learning or knowledge is being assessed. • To enable students to demonstrate their learning in different context. • Enable students and teachers to use feedback effectively and reflect on the learning process. • It should be inclusive and accessible to all students. • Assessment should be an ongoing process where progress is monitored over time. NEP focuses on 360 – degree assessment and feedback. To help students understand the importance of assessment, at SSRVM BE, we follow Assessment for learning, Assessment of learning and Assessment as learning. It is like a structured process that help students gauge their learning and also provides effective measures to scale their level of understanding and knowledge. All these types of learning combine together for self-assessment and peer assessment. Contd… 2
SSRVM Magazine Bengaluru East March 2022 Editor’s Corner: ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING: Mostly referred as ‘Formative assessment’, is a continuous process to clarify and work upon the student learning and understanding of a concept. • Formal and informal activities are part of this type of learning. • Includes clear goal setting. • Teachers provide effective feedback to motivate learners and to work towards improvement. • It offers a confidence that students can improve their learning curve. ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING: Sometimes referred as ‘Summative assessment’, usually occurs at defined times either during a concept or at the end of the concept. • Helps in planning future goals. • Transparent feedback provided by the teacher helps for a better learning. ASSESSMENT AS LEARNING: It is the most important type of assessment where students are their own assessors. Students learn more when they monitor their learning and question themselves and use a wide range of strategies to help them decide on how they can perform better. • It encourages students to take responsibility for their learning. • Teachers and students work collaboratively in creating learning goals so as to encourage growth and development. • Provides ideas and opportunities to use formal, informal, self and peer assessment and work towards the next step of learning. Assessment For learning and Assessment Of Learning are the main approaches that help teachers and students know if their learning is effective or not. In a nutshell, at SSRVM BE we make assessment as a friendly process and as a main key to acquire knowledge by providing effective feedback to help students grow and learn more. Ms. Varshini Facilitator Sri Sri Ravishankar Vidya Mandir Bengaluru East 3
SSRVM Magazine Bengaluru East March 2022 Editor’s Corner: A 360 – degree assessment is multi source feedback/assessment that provides feedback from peers, teachers, supervisors and parents as well as a self-evaluation by the students themselves is gathered. For an effective 360 – degree feedback the facilitators work on enhancing the students’ self – awareness and provide them with challenges to engage and identify their self-developmental strategies to cope up better. 360 – degree = holistic development: NEP focuses on holistic development of students. At SSRVM BE, we focus to reflect on the progress and uniqueness of each learner. Their cognitive skills, socio – emotional skills, psychomotor skills, project-based learning, inquiry- based learning, Role plays, group work etc. form part of their assessment criteria. 4
SSRVM Magazine Bengaluru East March 2022 Editor’s Corner: Self-monitoring is a necessary skill for self-assessment as students pay deliberate attention to what they are doing in relation to their learning. It plays a significant role to help students identify their strengths and weakness. Students need to self-assess to know how much effort they must expend for success. It enables students to recognize what they have mastered in and also to identify the areas where they have to work more. Post self-assessment, students reflect on what they know, or have learnt and identify their areas of confusion so that they can create new goals. At SSRVM BE, Self- assessment is in regular practice as it develops an awareness to thinks on which metacognitive strategies to be used and when to be used. 5
SSRVM Magazine Bengaluru East March 2022 Student learning improves when they get effective feedback from their peers. When students provide effective feedback, it helps them to analyze the problems and find operative solutions that are the symbols of higher order thinking skills. It is with peer assessment students receive feedback in a timely manner from varied perspectives of their same age. At SSRVM BE, Peer assessment is part of regular assessment schedule that helps in assessing the work of their peers. Students glean better understanding of their own work, honing their metacognitive capacity to recognize holes in their own understanding. 6
SSRVM Magazine Bengaluru East March 2022 With immense pride, we are happy to announce that our budding writer Ananya Shubhananda’s article has been awarded to be published under iNTELLYJELLY’s premium ‘BUDDING AUTHOR OF THE MONTH’ section. The Skilful Mosquitoes In the court of King Quentin, the king of all the mosquitoes, there was an emergency meeting! How the mosquitoes are supposed to get the food without being killed by humans. Because, now a days they are using some sort of dangerous tools. Somebody suggested that, when getting the food, they can hide behind curtains and the humans are not paying attention there then mosquitoes can take the food and fly away. For that one of the ministers replied “I have heard that they shake the curtains and drive us out” They all thought hard. President got an idea!, he said, “O King, I know have an idea, humans cannot notice us when we sit on black things, then we can wait till the night and when they off the lights we can go and bring food easily.” The King thought this was a wonderful idea and said “That’s great! Well, what do all of you say?” They all were about to agree when the Queen interrupted, “But what do we do if they turn on the fan?” They all started thinking again. They thought and thought but nothing seems to work out. Towards the end of the meeting everybody began to lose hope, when suddenly, the Prime Minister, who had been very quiet, got up and said “O King, I know the solution, when the humans on the fan the mosquitoes can hide under the bed.” Everybody stood up and greeted this idea with a big applause. The King said “It is settled then. We shall carry out this idea” Everybody was happy and few days passed without any complaints. One day, while the king was having his lunch the messenger came with a small envelop in his hand. O king! He said, an urgent message has arrived from a small town beside the capital. The king took the letter and read it. It was about many complains that the mosquitoes were again being killed. The king was shocked and worried. During the court period, he asked everyone. Does anybody have another solution to this endless problem? Has anybody gathered any information about the incidents? A courtier who lived in that town stood up and said O King! Contd….. 7
SSRVM Magazine Bengaluru East March 2022 The Skilful Mosquitoes - Contd… I have heard that the humans are now using a big stretched net. They wave it in the air at us. If it touches us, we will get a lighting strike and burn into ashes immediately. The king’s face has shown very pale after hearing this. He asked in a grief stricken voice ‘can somebody come up with a solution so that we can continue getting our food without being hurt.’ The whole day passed without any solution. Next day after the general preceding, the prime minister said, O king I have finally found the solution, I found this old time-travelling machine in my shelf along with this book. In this book it is said how our great ancestors have mastered the skill of getting food. So if some of us time travel we will be able to get the knowledge. The king was amazed at this idea and sent some of the brilliant and brave courtiers to time travel. After their return, they taught everybody the skill of getting food by tricking humans. Their after complains reduced day by day. One day, a small kid mosquito in 4th level of learning asked her father that why human doesn’t share food. They have so much blood in their bodies. Why cannot they spare a little food for us? The father replied “this is a big question; nobody knows the answer for.” The little mosquito was disappointed but curious to know the answer. The next day, when she went to get food, she saw a baby and bit it, sucked blood and tried to fly. Suddenly baby started making loud noise. Baby’s mother came and tried to shoo the mosquito and cursed it. And then, small mosquito understood that it hurts humans when they bite. So she flew back home at top speed and informed this to her parents and her father informed this to the king. King called for a meeting and the father narrated the entire story on why humans are hate mosquitoes. Then everyone was sad that they cannot get food without hurting humans. The king asked everyone to find out other sources of food. And the court adjourned for the day. Ananya Shubhananda Grade 4B 8
SSRVM Magazine Bengaluru East March 2022 At the age of 5, Vihaan used to be worried about the feral dogs’ food. Vihaan observed it and approached his mother with an idea to develop an app which can provide food to stray dogs without human support. This thought from an innocent and tender mind, was the seed of his curiosity to gain knowledge in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Vihaan started observing the automated process, accommodated in our daily life. Be it the adjustment of a fan regulator or repairing the China made car remote, he used to take an active part in mending machines around him. Two years passed by and we all faced the deadly pandemic. This was the time which helped Vihaan to ignite his interest and build a drone with the materials available at home. To shape this very thought, he made a machine out of 4 chopsticks, plastic fans, batteries, DC engines and remote from his old cars. With hundreds of trials and errors, finally he made a flying machine which could fly up to 3-4 inches from the ground level. The 2020 Hyderabad flood left the everyone in a great shock. Vihaan became worried when he saw his grandparents’ home submerged in 7 feet water for around 8 days. To find the solution for this problem, Vihaan came up with an idea to make a home-made pump which can drain out the water from the low-lying surface of their home. We were surprised looking at the young mind who is trying to solve the problem with his best possible way. Identifying issues and solving them became a routine for him. One such situation was to save his favourite chocolates from elder sister, Shreeya. And to answer this, Vihaan started working on a project and created a Super Safe which would gong whenever Shreeya tried to open the safe!! Hand sanitiser dispenser, Electricity Generator and self-guided motor vehicle are a few of Vihaan’s projects from his treasure. The school is proud to have a young scientist who always thinks and finds solution for everything. We wish Vihaan to be a responsible citizen who can develop an attitude to solve a problem through willingness, perseverance and self-confidence. Way to go Vihaan!!! Good luck!! Vihaan Grade 4B 9
