Lterta’sveclhaanmdpisopnogrrteen Welcome to the first Barking BikeFest. I hope you and your family have a fantastic day in what will be a wonderful celebration of cycling and sustainability. The event will not only feature the London leg of ITV’s Tour Series but also a community festival featuring cycle races for all ages and abilities, fun bike related events, musical entertainment plus an exhibition of green travel technology. There will also be a nod to the borough’s proud past with the presentation of The Mary Wollstonecraft Cup to winners of the professional Women’s race in memory of the pioneering feminist who once lived in the borough. BikeFest will be a celebration of cycling and of Barking and Dagenham’s rich heritage, which is why we chose to host the event against the magnificent backdrop of Barking Abbey. The borough has always made a huge contribution to the nation’s story. We are determined to continue to make our mark on history with BikeFest. We want the event to leave a lasting environmental legacy. Climate change is a clear and present danger, so it’s important for us to lead the way in adopting greener travel. And, we want to build on the borough’s splendid sporting history too. Just as Sir Alf Ramsey, Bobby Moore and Martin Peters – Barking and Dagenham’s 1966 World Cup winning squad - inspired a generation of footballers, I hope that BikeFest will inspire new cyclists and, who knows, possibly some cycling champions too. What a proud legacy that would be! Councillor Darren Rodwell Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council 03

04

Why BikeFest? As Councillor Rodwell outlined earlier BikeFest is not all about cycling. It’s also about leaving a sporting legacy and helping to make Barking and Dagenham a heathier borough. The borough has sadly often topped the table as one of the country’s unhealthiest places with levels of obesity among the worst in England. By bringing a day of cycling to the borough we hope to inspire and promote healthier ways of living and sustainable travel so that our residents can be among the healthiest and happiest in the UK. And, by hosting a televised national sporting event in the borough we can showcase the historic Barking Abbey and its splendid grounds and put the borough on London’s tourist map – providing an economic legacy too. Oh, and last, but not least, we hope the event will be fun for everyone – from the professional cyclists to budding bikers or day trippers, who will all see why Barking and Dagenham is a great place to live, visit and work. The green village BikeFest is about fun as much as celebration of cycling and the promotion of green and healthy living. And it’s The Green Village where the fun starts. Here on Abbey Green you and your family will be entertained by musicians and bands playing well known covers and hits. And there will be thrills and spills featuring stunts on BMXs and mountain bikes by Fusion Extreme team – who will also be on hand to teach some simple bike tricks. There will also be a five metre high talking green robot called Binbot and interactive workshops creating bespoke bike streamers for children’s bicycles. Also on hand will be Dr Bike, who will be giving free bike medicals and advice on how to keep your bike roadworthy and safe. And, don’t forget to check out the heritage exhibition and activities in historic St Margaret’s Church. P>>>>l> u sfmaasbrocaatfegsltliopcapoanlsnaidnhymtocefwroorasrdfettsloldedrslers, and 12

REoleccktdroicwnAvteonue As part of our commitment to delivering a lasting legacy, the Barking BikeFest will feature an exhibition of green travel technology – known as Electric Avenue. The avenue will showcase a number of alternatives to using the car which clogs up our roads and pollutes our air. The exhibition is part of our ambition to help make Barking and Dagenham a greener, heathier borough. Electric Avenue will feature information and demonstrations on: Electric cycles If you’re interested in e-bikes, you are in luck! Lime Bike will be in attendance to showcase their e-bikes. They will also be putting on a demonstration. E-bikes are cleaner and less expensive than a rideshare and Lime electric-assist bikes make it easy to get across town. Come down to Abbey Green and try one out for yourself. car clubs Have you ever had questions about how Car Clubs actually work? Come down to Electric Avenue and talk to Enterprise Car Club.
