VAdm Narayan Prasad, AVSM, NM, IN(Retd), CMD, MDL The Launching of Udaygiri (Y-12652), the second Stealth Frigate of Project 17A today marks another milestone in the long and eventful history of warship production in India. This event is also bears testimony to Indian Navy’s continuous faith in the capabilities of MDL to deliver potent platforms to fulfill Navy’s aspirations of becoming a blue water navy. Project 17A ships are not only technologically generations ahead of its predecessor Shivalik Class but are also required to be delivered with reduced build periods. To achieve this objective, MDL has adopted integrated construction methodology wherein the blocks are being pre-outfitted before assembly on the slipway. The Product Data Management / Project Lifecycle Management (PDM/PLM) is being introduced first time in shipbuilding on the ships of project 17A. This will lead to digital transformation of Naval shipbuilding and provide a platform for data management during the design, construction and throughout the service life of the ship. While the role of a shipyard is that of an integrator, MDL has been in the forefront to increase the indigenous content on our ships. It has worked closely with Indian Navy in substituting numerous imported equipment. It is the culmination of joint effort of MDL & the Indian Navy that P17A ships will have an indigenous content of more than 70%. I would like to complement Director (Shipbuilding) and his team, Directorate of Naval Design & Warship Overseeing Team for making the ship ready for launch. I am confident that the synergized effort, hard work and toil put in by all concerned would fructify into a finely crafted battle worthy ship which would be a powerful force multiplier for the Indian Navy in the years to come. Jai Hind !
Shri Biju George, (Director- Shipbuilding) The Launching of Udaygiri (Y-12652), the second Stealth Frigate of Project 17A marks yet another moment of national pride as well as bears testimony to the skill, capability and pioneering efforts of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. MDL has come a long way moving from steam to diesel and gas propulsion, adding stealth features to hull and machin- ery, improving detection ranges, missile and gunnery capability. P17A ships have brought in ‘many firsts’ and new challenges in ship design and construction, enhanced stealth features, increased automation, state of the art weapons, sensors and machinery. Integrated construction used in P17A ships, first time in indigenous warship building, will reduce the build period of these ships substantially. Build period will also reduce due to use of the concept of parallel construction introduced in these ships, wherein the blocks are being manufactured at different geographical locations and consolidated at MDL. All this has been possible due to the use of best resources like our professional executives, experienced subcontractors, reliable suppliers and skilled operatives in a synergized manner. I would like to congratulate the entire shipbuilding division for working with zeal, enthusiasm and professional competence to ensure the readiness for Launch of the vessel. My complements to the Project Management Team who have put in relentless and consistent efforts to overcome numerous challenges faced during launching preparations. I must also complement the officers and staff of Directorate of Naval Design and of the Warship Overseeing Team, Mumbai who have been our partners in every stage of construction of Udaygiri helped us in jointly solving the problems which arose during the production process. It brings me immense pride to be at the helm of Shipbuilding Team of MDL which is building technologically advanced combat platforms of international standard and encouraging Indian manufacturers to participate in shipbuilding program to realise the true spirit of Make in India. I take this opportunity to wish the Project Superintendent of P17A and his team all the very best in maintaining the same momentum in completing the balance work and deliver the ship as per the contracted timelines. Jai Hind !
Shri A Vinod, Project Superintendent-P17A Launching of Udaygiri ( Y-12652), the Second frigate of Project 17A is indeed a moment of pride for all of us at MDL. It is a laudable achievement for all the executives, staff and operatives of MDL who have put in the hard work to launch the vessel. The Project 17A Stealth Frigate are a continuation of the lineage of highly successful Shivalik Class ships. These technologically advanced platforms are fitted with the state-of-the-art sensors and weapons and once commis- sioned would add substantial punch to the arms of Indian Navy. All major dry dock activities including alignment & installation of outboard shafting post embarkation of propul- sion and associated equipment have been completed in the dry dock phase of Yd 12652. We would like to thank all the MDL employees associated with this prestigious project for their efforts. We would also like to thank DND and WOT (Mbi) team for their guidance and support. Jai Hind !

DIRECTORATE OF NAVAL DESIGN(DND) The founders of the Indian Navy realized early that the 33 ships of various sizes and capabilities inherited from the Royal Navy at Independence were grossly inadequate for India’s maritime defence, and that indigenous warship construction would be a competence that India would need to develop if she were to become a self-reliant and powerful nation. This was the genesis of the Central Design Organisation that was established in 1964. Rechristened Directorate of Naval Design (Ship Surface Group) or DND (SSG), it has since evolved into a cradle of excellence in warship design over the last five decades. The Indian Navy’s in house Design Directorate has designed over 19 designs to which over 90 ships including Destroyers, Frigates, Survey Vessels, Landing Ship Tanks and Seaward Defence Boats have been built. The Organisation has been a key enabler in the metamorphosis of the Indian Navy into a potent blue water force.
