Our agreement with the ITF will help achieve this, and supports the agreements we already hold with a number of unions in countries where we’re represented.” The agreement will contribute to the best possible collaboration between unions and the company including not only adherence to International Labour Organization (ILO) core conventions on freedom of association, organising and collective bargaining, but also the guarantee of regular meetings between unions and management and the inclusion of grievance and arbitration procedures. OSM Aviation recruits, appoints, trains and administers flight personnel. It currently has bases in 14 countries and deals are already in place with unions in a number of these. Norway’s Norwegian airline is the company’s largest client by far, but it also has assignments for eight other international airlines. The new MOU will be implemented across the OSM network. The ITF represents more than five million transport workers organised through 680 unions in 150 countries. General secretary of the federation Steve Cotton said: “We’ve followed developments in international aviation with concern. New players have emerged with models that challenge workers’ rights, aggressively pushing forward the race to the bottom. What that means in practice is an under regulated industry where standards for workers are in decline. OSM Aviation is taking steps to promote permanent employment and orderly pay and working conditions. That’s a good starting point, and I’m pleased we have now put an agreement in place where we and OSM Aviation will cooperate with one another to protect union rights, social security and working conditions.

IN THE NEWS IATA, UNCTAD COLLABORATE TO BOOST GLOBAL ADOPTION OF CARGO MESSAGING STANDARDS

January 25, 2017 - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) announced that IATA’s Cargo-XML messaging standard has now been fully integrated into ASYCUDA World, the UNCTAD automated customs management system used by 90 countries worldwide for their customs procedures. The integration of Cargo-XML in ASYCUDA World standardizes the electronic communications between airlines and customs authorities using the program. The new data standard reduces message duplication and simplifies communication across the supply chain facilitating trade growth, improving cargo security, modernizing customs operations and fostering participation in global commerce through advance electronic data submission for air cargo shipments. Cargo-XML makes it easier for airlines, freight forwarders and shippers to ensure that the information being provided to the customs authorities is technically correct and in line with the standards of industry bodies such as the World Customs Organization (WCO) and regulators. It also facilitates custom risk assessments for air cargo shipments and improves compliance with security regulations. “Having a standard air cargo digital messaging system between customs authorities, airlines and other air cargo stakeholders is fundamental to enhancing efficiency, driving trade growth and maximizing safety and security across the industry. IATA’s successful partnership with UNCTAD means that airlines, freight-forwarders, shippers and border agencies in over 90 countries can now talk the same digital language. It takes the industry one step closer to achieving the global adoption of a standard air cargo messaging system,” said Glyn Hughes, IATA Global Head, Cargo. “Considering the complexity of trade flows, increasing demands on advance risk assessments and operational efficiency, electronic data interchange is an integral component of customs modernization programs,” said Shamika N. Sirimanne, Director of UNCTAD’s Division on Technology and Logistics. “We’re delighted to support IATA Cargo-XML standards in the ASYCUDA system, which ultimately will help trade efficiency, improve custom clearance and enhance security through risk assessment procedures,” she added.
