I Carry Your Heart With Me i carry your heart with me(i carry it in my heart)i am never without it(anywhere i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done by only me is your doing,my darling) i fear no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true) and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant and whatever a sun will always sing is you here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide) and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart) We carry in our heartsby E.E. Cummins and memories Harold and Dorothy Austin , Dr. Sam Parker and Joan Teller, John Jauron, Ron Coffman, Jill Teller Johnson and Pamela Underwood.

Don was not only a brilliant scientist but a great teacher. He never let dogma or bias get in the way of his search for truth, and he bravely spoke truth to power. Don, we miss you, but I know your good work will continue through your positive influence on students and colleagues. Leslie O'Leary, Eugene, OR Don was a pivotal figure in my education in the Epidemiology and Biostatistics track of the OHSU MPH Program. after many years in the program spanning the end of my residency, my fellowship at the NIH, and my return to the faculty, it was Don's consistent encouragement and mentorship that allowed me to finish my MPH degree. I will always be grateful for all he taught me, not only about Epi and Biostatistics, but about intellectual rigor, scientific integrity, and persistence. I am grateful to have been his student and colleague and will always remember him with fondness and with gratitude. May his memory be for a blessing. Eric Suhler, Lake Oswego Don was a wonderful mentor to me during my Preventive Medicine residency. He was one of the lead authors on the development of Oregon's first clinical practice guidelines for diabetes, which served as my residency practicum project. He guided me with wisdom about the importance of public health practice. During my latter tenure at OHSU we shared an office and often discussed the challenges of educating students and public health professionals. Please accept my sincere condolences. Jay Kravitz, Portland, OR Don was a wonderful colleague and mentor to so many students and professionals in public health. He was instrumental in designing and implementing the Oregon Cancer Registry and Chronic Disease Program before he transitioned to OHSU to dedicate his energy to teaching and conducting research. Don was quick to laugh with and complement those he worked with. He will be long remembered as a hero of public health. Michael Heumann, Portland, OR

Horse Named Bill Once there was a horse named Bill When he ran he couldn't stand still He ran away, one day, And I, went with him He ran so fast he could not stop He ran into a barber shop And he fell down, exhausted, With his head on the barber's left shoulder What do you do in a case like that? All you can do is stomp on your hat or your toothbrush! Or your toothpaste Or anything else you can find That is helpless I went up in a balloon last fall, Everything looked so small like pigs, Like chickens, like katydids, like katydidn’ts Down in the cove there lives a whale, He eats sardines by the pail, by the bucket By the barrel, by the hogshead, by the schooner ~Family Song
