8 NIGHTMARISH HORRORS TO BINGE For many, horror films are the perfect excuse to invite some friends over, eat some pizza and dim the lights for a scary movie night. Some prefer bad b-movies so they can laugh and make fun of them while others prefer true horror so they and their friends can be scared together. Luckily for the latter, we have the perfect list for the most recent pants-soiling horror experience. NOVEMBER 2022 5

Crimes of the Future Anyone vaguely familiar with the work of David Cronenberg will be well aware of the body horror aspects of his movies. From the all-time classic head explosion in Scanners to the horrible fly/man thing, Jeff Goldblum turns into at the end of the 80s The Fly. With Crimes of the Future Cronenberg does what Cronenberg does best, nightmare-inducing body horror. In Crimes of the Future, the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, and the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner, Caprice, Saul Tenser, a celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin, an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed with their sole mission to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution. It’s a tough watch as is most of Cronenberg’s movies, but it offers a fascinating look at the human body and what people will do to it to reach the next level. With a fantastic cast in Léa Seydoux, Viggo Mortensen, and Kristen Stewart, Crimes of the Future is a fantastic, if tough watch for Halloween. Scream (2022) Moving away from the bizarre to something more tangible, the Scream series has become synonymous with Halloween movie nights. And even though the series peaked back in the early 2000’s it’s still a beloved franchise. Fortunately, the 2022 sequel, simply named Scream is a return to form for the much-loved series. Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past. 2022’s version of Scream brings everything that made the original movies so successful, loads of brutal kills, hilarious inside jokes, and even more brutal social commentary. This movie also sees the return of series regulars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette to once again play their iconic roles, plus a whole batch of new young stars joins the fray in Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, and Marley Shelton. The 2022 release of Scream is the perfect Halloween movie if you’re looking for laughs, chills, and an all-round good time with friends. 6 NOVEMBER 2022

X In the ’70s the grindhouse horror was all the rage, a mix of sleaze’ploitation and ultra-violence. Throughout the decades the genre faded away but was kept alive by fans like Quinten Tarantino and others. X is a return to the grindhouse format, another great film in the already stacked library from A24. Set in 1979, strip-club owner Wayne decides to gather a group of friends and employees, including his girlfriend Maxine, to make a low-budget adult film titled “The Farmer’s Daughter” in rural Texas. In order to save money on hotel rooms, the cast and crew stay at a remote farmhouse owned by a reclusive, elderly couple. When their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the filmmakers find themselves fighting for their lives. The cast is fantastic with a wonderful performance from the new scream queen Jenna Ortega, but the supporting cast in Brittany Snow, Kid Cudi, and Mia Goth play above- and-beyond parts as pornographers trying to elevate their medium. X’s director Ti West has loads of fun comparing horror to pornography in terms of public perception, while characters are granted agency beyond easy stereotypes. It’s gory, it’s fun, and above all scary as hell. You Won’t Be Alone Making his directorial debut, Goran Stolevski heads to 19th Century horror in this unique take on the horror genre. Set in an isolated mountain village in 19th-century Macedonia, You Won’t Be Alone follows a young girl who is kidnapped and then transformed into a witch by an ancient spirit. Curious about life as a human, the young witch accidentally kills a peasant in the nearby village and then takes her victim’s shape to live life in her skin. Her curiosity ignited, she continues to wield this horrific power in order to understand what it means to be human. The horror follows her as she continues to kill and slowly integrates into human society. Unlike other movies on this list, You Won’t Be Alone can be seen more as an arthouse horror, with beautiful cinematography and subtle performances from its wonderful cast.  You Won’t Be Alone breaks the horror trope constraints in an artsy and poetic way that is disturbing, intense, beautiful, and never strays too far from its true essence as folk horror. Stolevski comes across as a confident filmmaker with a clear vision of how he wants to tell his story and if You Won’t Be Alone is his first attempt we cannot wait to see what he does next. The Black Phone Blumhouse horrors can be very hit-and-miss at the best of times from horror highs such as Get Out to the terrifying lows of Thriller. Fortunately, The Black Phone falls under the former. Based on a short story by Joe Hill, son of famous horror author Stephen King, Black Phone sees Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney. A wonderfully creepy movie that mixes supernatural horror with real-life terror of being kidnapped, multiple Oscar-nominated Ethan Hawke delivers a terrifying turn as the masked kidnapper, a performance that elevates the movie. Director Scott Derrickson also returns from his Marvel exploits to take the helm of a genre that made him famous. His direction goes a long way as he shows a confident and transformative command of The Grabber’s basement. It feels massive when Thames’ victim searches around for escape clues and claustrophobic when The Grabber comes downstairs to enhance the sensations of chilly isolation.  The Sadness Gore and violence have always been at the heart of a classic horror flick and The SAdness ticks both boxes as Canadian filmmaker Rob Jabbaz unleashes his inner grindhouse love onto Taiwan. After a year of combating a pandemic with relatively benign symptoms, a frustrated nation finally lets its guard down. This is when the virus spontaneously mutates, giving rise to a mind-altering plague. The streets erupt into violence and depravity, as those infected are driven to enact the cruelest and ghastly things they can think of. Murder, torture, rape, and mutilation are only the beginning. A young couple is pushed to the limits of sanity as they try to reunite amid the chaos. The age of civility and order is no more. There is only The Sadness. The heart of the story resides with Kat (Regina Lei) and her boyfriend Jim (Berant Zhu) as they try to survive long enough to meet up and escape the city after being separated from each other. However, the biggest draws of The Sadness are the practical gore effects and the film’s relentlessly mean and nasty aesthetic. If you love intense gore in your horror films then The Sadness is the one for you. 8 NOVEMBER 2022

Watcher Halloween movie nights aren’t exclusively for monster horror, of course, there is plenty of room in the playlist for a good old-fashioned psychological thriller that will haunt you for days to come. Watcher is one such film that, although not jump scares scary, will stick with you for days after the credits roll. A young American woman, Julia, moves with her husband to Bucharest, and begins to suspect that a stranger who watches her from the apartment building across the street may be a local serial killer decapitating women. The movie is definitely a slow- burn as she deals with the accumulating psychological damage of being watched and stalked by a stranger while most of the people around her, including her husband Francis, downplay her emotions. It’s an uncomfortable watch but in the best way possible, following Julia on her journey through paranoia and fear will hit close to home to anyone who had that “someone is watching me” feeling. The slow burn of the movie itself adds to the tension that crescendos into one of the best and agonizingly scary endings we’ve seen in a movie in a long time. Mad God Anyone who claims that stop-motion animation can’t be scary clearly hasn’t watched Mad God. From the twisted mind of the world-renowned stop-motion animator, Phil Tippett comes one of the scariest and best-looking stop-motion animation films in years. Equipped with a gas mask and a crumbling map, the Assassin, an iron-clad humanoid, descends into a rusty, peril-laden underworld of grime, blood, and unsettling monstrosities. As the stealthy invader meanders through the labyrinthine post-apocalyptic wasteland on a mysterious mission, going deeper and deeper into the nightmarish realm, the Assassin gradually reaches his final destination: the heart of this grotesque tower of torture. But what cruel, vindictive deity allows fear and suffering to take its most complete creation further and further into despair? Only a Mad God would revel in humankind’s ordeal. The movie is beautifully grotesque, depicting a journey that descends further and further into a hellish world of death and decay. It is a supremely atmospheric and surreal experience that should be viewed by any fan of dark and strange things. NOVEMBER 2022 9

This, coupled with a creepy world and character design make for an atmospheric experience that’s fun in groups and terrifying alone. If scary puzzle platformers are your thing, then Little Nightmares II will without a doubt scratch that horror itch.

Pathologic 2 Pathologic 2 is a narrative-driven dramatic thriller about fighting a deadly outbreak in a secluded rural town that is dying. Face the realities of a collapsing society as you make difficult choices in seemingly lose-lose situations. The plague isn’t just a disease it is devouring the town. The chief local healer is dead, and you are now to take his place. Yet most of the dying locals are not best pleased to see you. This stubbornly unforgiving game will challenge and punish you at every turn as you try to last for twelve days in its deadly village. The town is beset by a vicious plague, and you desperately have to try and save as many as you can. Pathologic revels in darkness and its bizarre setting and story, which you’ll uncover more of if you survive long enough, you have to satiate your hunger, thirst, and tiredness to keep on going. It’s a punishing game that does not care about the player, some may find it frustrating, and others will revel in its unforgiving and horrific nature. SOMA SOMA is a sci-fi horror game from Frictional Games, the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It is an unsettling story about identity, consciousness, and what it means to be human. The radio is dead, food is running out, and the machines have started to think they are people. Underwater facility PATHOS-II has suffered an intolerable isolation and we’re going to have to make some tough decisions. What can be done? What makes sense? What is left to fight for? Enter the world of SOMA and face horrors buried deep beneath the ocean waves. Delve through locked terminals and secret documents to uncover the truth behind the chaos. Seek out the last remaining inhabitants and take part in the events that will ultimately shape the fate of the station. But be careful, danger lurks in every corner: corrupted humans, twisted creatures, insane robots, and even an inscrutable omnipresent A.I. Visage If you were ever fortunate enough to play the Silent Hills demo, P.T. then you will feel right at home with Visage, a first-person psychological horror game. Explore a mysterious ever-changing house in a slow-paced, atmospheric world that combines both uncannily comforting and horrifyingly realistic environments, and enjoy a genuinely terrifying experience. You’ll wander through the gloomy corridors, explore every dead room, and get lost in endless mazes, your head filled with memories of the dead families that once lived in this very home. This twisted environment, void of any life other than yours, takes you to places you couldn’t even begin to imagine. Much like P.T. you are defenseless, no weapons could save you from the dreadful entities stalking you from the next corner, the next door, or underneath your feet. You’ll be able to pick up key elements, interact with the environment, and search for things that may help you escape this nightmare or pull you deeper into it. Dying is part of the game. You need to avoid terror at all costs, as dark entities are attracted to it. Maintaining your mind as sane as possible will keep you from joining the ranks of the dead. He was a frequent visitor of the most important bars, which include the Superstar Go-Go bar, whose owners were arrested and pledged guilty in 1988 for smuggling marijuana to the U.S. Their case? During an inspection of a ship by the U.S. Coast guard, 72 tons of Thai marijuana were confiscated. That’s a lot of weed!   Patpong captivated the attention of many different people and not only those who worked for the CIA and other unconventional visitors. Of course not. David Bowie had an affinity with Bangkok, but especially with Patpong. He visited the area in 1983 due to this moonlight tour, and even shot a video clip here. He also took it as an opportunity to truly live Patpong with its extravagant go-go bars and XXX-rated entertainment. He shot his video clip in the Superstar Club, which is still active nowadays (The Ownership changed of course after that little weed incident in 1988). Bowie remains one of the most iconic visitors of Patpong because he came to play for the people of Thailand at a very low rate. And also Robert De Niro visited Patpong to record a movie. It was for “The Deer Hunter” in 1978, and it had several scenes that were shot in the classic Mississippi Queen bar. Other famous visitors include Roman Polanski, which serves to see how Patpong captivated the attention of people all over the world. But the list does not stop there. The heavyweight boxing legend Muhammad Ali also visited Patpong. A fact that not many people know, but he visited the area. The same goes for Steven Tyler, who also explored Patpong and the different things it has to offer. Another famous visitor was Hugh Grant. He explored the nightlife scene of Patpong, by visiting its most iconic bars. Also, Supermodel Kendall Jenner visits Patpong.  We found the story of this red-light district so intriguing interesting that we had to tell you and – of course – to show you. FHM got the chance to shoot with the Model Bella Smiles in the Patpong Museum. We think, Bella looks amazing, and Patpong had one more gorgeous visitor.
