shop Inspiring homes elegant Laura chose a faux leather Edwardian Chesterfield sofa from p58 Next to contrast with the dark walls. ‘It genuinely looks and feels like leather but it’s brilliant with three young children as it just wipes clean if you get any spills,’ she says style idea A picture shelf above the sofa is a stylish spin on a gallery wall OLD-MEETS-NEW TERRACE I'VE GIVEN MY TRADITIONAL HOUSE a modern twist Bold colour choices, stylish updates and quirky artwork, have given Laura Ferguson’s period home a contemporary charm

Living room ‘I love the original green, pink and purple fireplace tiles in here, which inspired the whole scheme. After stripping the wallpaper, we noticed a line where the picture rail would’ve been, so we had it re-instated. We originally painted three walls a slightly grey off-white with a feature wall at the side in a burgundy shade called Brinjal by Farrow & Ball. Six months later, when we had bespoke alcove cupboards made, we’d gained the confidence to go the whole hog and paint all the walls burgundy. I’m really thrilled with it as it makes the space so cosy.’ ‘Having an original working fireplace was a major plus point for Laura and she loves changing up the mantelpiece styling depending on the season. 'The tiles are original and the colours suit my tastes so well – I couldn’t have chosen better myself,’ she says ‘Laura picked floral cushions from Homesense and a grey bobble design from B&M. ‘I don’t like cushions to be too matchy-matchy,’ she says. ‘The pretty floral ones tie in with the scheme without being a uniform colour and the grey ones coordinate with the sofa and rug from Dunelm brilliantly' ‘I showed a local joiner some ideas for MDF shelving and cabinets on Pinterest and he drew us a mock up,’ says Laura. ‘I love the final result – they look like they belong here’ We gained the confidence to go the whole hog and paint all the walls burgundy. I’m really thrilled with it as it makes the space so cosy 52 yourhomestyle.uk

Inspiring homes ‘We didn’t paint this wall dark make ‘When we redid the kitchen as I wanted a lighter backdrop this and added an island, we got for the artwork. We went for a rid of the old table in there fringed and bought a new one from pinky lilac called Peignoir by lampshade Furniture 123 for this space,’ Farrow & Ball, which is the same says Laura. ‘The fun gallery p60 wall pictures are all personal as the utility room door in the to our family. I added tassels to the group drew after lampshade to personalise it’ interviewing us about lockdown walks’ ‘I love the quirkiness of traditional paintings that have been modernised,’ says Laura. ‘This one is from Rockett St George. We put up these floating shelves from IKEA as the colour matched our existing Next sideboard below. We plan to get bespoke cabinets made but this looks good for now’ Dining room ‘This room is north-facing and just never felt right whatever we did to it. In the end we painted the walls in Farrow & Ball’s Inchyra Blue, which we’d already used in our south-facing bedroom. It looks fabulous and has totally changed the look and feel of the room. While the colour looks more green upstairs, it’s bluer in here. Although it seems counterintuitive to paint a north-facing room dark, it hasn’t made the room feel darker or colder. In fact, it feels cosier and warmer. Now we love to have special meals in here or watch movies together.’ style idea Vary shelving, with a mix of ledges and wall units, to display art prints, ornaments and fave trinkets for an eclectic look February 2023 53

‘We wanted more traditional Shaker-style cabinets to suit the age of the house,’ says Laura. ‘I knew I wanted a dark kitchen, and it was either going to be green or blue in a matt finish. In the end we went for Cobham Blue from DIY Kitchens as it works well with the pink accents that I love’ 54 yourhomestyle.uk

Kitchen Inspiring homes ‘When we first moved in, the kitchen felt like a long, thin ‘I love the gold colour on the glass pendant lights corridor with a step down to the rear section, as the from Amazon. The bar stools are from B&M’ previous owners had knocked out the chimney breast wall to make it open-plan. It irritated me as the sink was miles away at the far end of the room. Although we hadn’t planned to replace the kitchen so soon, after a year I’d had enough! We decided to put the wall back up to create a utility room as I prefer having the washer and dryer separate. It made it easier to fit everything into the kitchen and gave us a wall for the tall oven and larder cabinets. As it’s quite an awkward space, we had about four designs drawn up by different kitchen companies and amalgamated the parts we loved. I felt like a kitchen designer myself by the end! Eventually, we opted for DIY Kitchens as they had the shade of blue we loved in their standard range and a custom colour with another company would’ve cost a lot more.’ ‘There were no wall cabinets before, just base units and STEAL MY STYLE a shelf,’ says Laura. ‘I don’t think I’m tidy enough to have Get Laura’s contemporary-meets- everything out on a shelf, so I wanted more hidden storage. White IKEA bedside tables pop against the blue panelling. ‘We’ve since done some DIY panelling in the downstairs loo and hallway, but here we hired a joiner as it seemed a bit more complicated to integrate the wall lights’ Master bedroom Clara's bedroom Laura painted the original fire surround white to tie in with ‘Clara’s room is the smallest in the house, but we waited the window woodwork and sleigh bed from Time4Sleep, until she was a toddler before redecorating. Inspiring homes Bathroom ‘Although the bathroom was fairly new, the beige tiles made it feel a bit dull, so I decided to give it a mini makeover. Our plan is to eventually knock through to the separate toilet and create a bigger family bathroom, so we didn’t want to spend too much. Just painting over the tiles and walls in off- white has made a huge difference. I also stencilled the floor tiles after seeing ideas on Pinterest. It was a bit tricky in parts and it’s not perfect, but from a distance it gives a good illusion of a patterned tiled floor. The room looks so much brighter now and it’s a nicer space to relax and have a bath.’ How to revamp tiles Laura has transformed the floor tiles using stencils from Dizzy With stickers, stencilling or a simple repaint Duck Designs. She also painted the wood cabinet in pink and the First, clean your tiles and grout. Use a mix of hot water window frame and shower screen and washing-up liquid or sugar soap. A blind from Blinds Direct ties the colours together There are lots of specialist tile paints to choose from. Brands such as Ronseal, Johnstone’s and Rust-Oleum all have a good range of colours. Apply the paint with a mini roller and use a grout pen afterwards to add definition. Tile stickers come in a range of standard sizes or can be made to measure. Just line up your sticker and start flattening it out from the middle using a squeegee to get rid of air bubbles. 3D self-adhesive tiles are best if you want to cover textured tiles. Try Jes Rose, Namely, Wall Genie or Dunelm. Stencilling is a more time-consuming job but well worth the effort. Your stencil should be 2mm smaller than your tile, and you should practise on some spare tiles or cardboard to nail the technique first. The key is not overloading your mini roller as you only need a tiny amount of paint for a crisp line. Good sources include Dizzy Duck Designs, Ideal Stencils, Not On The High Street and Etsy. To protect your tiles for years to come, finish with three-to-four coats of waterproof sealant such as No Nonsense Stone & Tile Sealer or Frenchic Tuff Top Coat. Lay out the fabric and place the PVC from the lampshade making kit on top, in the centre, with the grid lines down. Gradually peel off the backing paper and use your hand to apply pressure across the surface of the PVC to ensure there are no air bubbles. 2 Cut along the edge of the PVC on all sides. Then fold along the pre-cut kiss cuts along the top and bottom edges and gently pull away the PVC backing, revealing a margin of your fabric. Trim away any loose threads. 3 Apply a strip of double-sided tape from the kit onto the PVC along one short edge then remove the tape backing. Apply more of your tape to cover the outer rings of the top and bottom frame pieces. 4 Peel off the tape backing from the frame pieces and position on the top and bottom edges of the PVC – make sure the frame support on the top piece is facing inwards. Roll these simultaneously from one short edge towards the edge with the tape strip. Stick down the seam when you reach it and then roll your fabric edge over the top and bottom rings. Use the finishing tool provided in the kit to tuck in the raw edges under the frame pieces. 5 To neatly finish the lampshade, apply fabric glue to the back of the bias binding and fold over the top edge, lining the join up with your seam. Attach the fringe trim around the bottom edge by applying fabric glue to the top edge of the trim, short sections at a time, and sticking to the shade – use pegs to hold the fringe in place as it dries. LOVELY & LOVED I describe my home style as ‘modern-country’ with an emphasis on sustainability. The table and chairs are second-hand, the sketches are by my late Grandad and the cupboard doors under the stairs were left by the previous owners. However, there are hundreds of subtly different shades of white to choose from. Cool whites are best for south-facing rooms as they usually contain hints of blue, green, or black. Meanwhile, in darker, north-facing rooms, warm whites that contain red or yellow undertones, work best. These undertones are amplified by the kind of natural daylight a room gets, and can even be affected by the contents of a room, which will reflect onto the walls and change the appearance of the shade. By choosing white or cream furniture, or adding pale throws and rugs, you will help to increase the sense of light and space within the room. If you decide on an all-white room, consider using different shades of white or pale neutrals within the space to accent architectural features, such as architraves, skirting or alcoves. Whichever white paint you choose, look for a scrubbable finish if you have kids and pets at home.

01 Kitchen makeover 03 02 Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home 01 Flexible entertaining Key to turning Rosie’s room into a social space is the vintage drinks trolley she picked up in a charity shop for £10 after being inspired by Instagram. She added marble-effect vinyl to improve the worn surface and styled the shelves with a variety of drink accessories, such as gold shot measures, a glass pineapple from John Lewis & Partners and flamingo bottle openers. ‘I love that the trolley is pretty to look at as well as being a practical piece,’ she says. ‘It’s easy to pull into the room to become the focal point of the evening and it can be tucked away when it’s not needed.’ 02 Style a breakfast bar Matching the new worktop with the existing one gives the kitchen a unified finish – it looks as though the breakfast bar has always been there. A trio of lights from Industville zones the area with gold lamp holders to tie in with the cupboard handles and clock. ‘I love the shape of the Pebble wall clock from Dunelm and the mirrored surface adds depth,’ says Rosie. ‘On a practical note, the dishwasher below was easy to plumb in because the washing machine is in a cupboard on the other side of the wall.’ 03 Blend an open-plan room Rosie settled on a scheme of pale pinks, blue-green and touches of yellow and introduced elements from the palette to both zones. The DFS grey sofa provides a neutral base that Rosie likes to update with colourful cushions and artwork above. ‘I look out for unique prints at affordable prices, like these ones from OhSoDaisy,’ she says. Soft furnishings have also helped tie the look together. ‘Cushions are a quick, affordable way to bring in instant colour.' February 2023 89

It works brilliantly in here and has lots of storage, too. The chevron tiles came next. I was inspired by a similar design in Paradiso Ibiza Art Hotel, and they work perfectly with the pink. I was frantically searching online, two weeks before the tiler was due to start, but I found exactly the right size and colour just in time. Our neighbour is a joiner, so he put up the panelling, which adds lots of character. I’m so glad we managed to squeeze in the walk-in shower, too, as it's used every day. The rain shower head works brilliantly and the alcove shelves provide tidy storage. I’m really happy with the finished look. I’d kept things safe in our previous house with greys and whites but here I wanted to be brave and have a bit of fun with colour which I’ve definitely done. ‘We love oak so have added a wooden shelf that ties in with the beams downstairs,’ says Sarah. ‘The view of the garden is stunning from here. Bathroom makeover 02 01 Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home 01 Timeless features 'A traditional-style toilet and towel radiator works well with the classic, elegant look we've gone for in the bathroom. We had the same toilet in our last house, and everyone always liked the novelty of the old-school design,’ says Sarah. ‘A blush-coloured towel complements the pink panelling, while on the bottom of the wall, we've used a different-coloured tile as a stylish alternative to a skirting board. It looks great and is really easy to clean.' 03 02 Make art on a shoestring Most of the artwork is from Juniqe, but the vintage flower prints are from a postcard book with frames painted in the same pink as the panelling. ‘It’s a really cost-effective way of creating artwork,’ says Sarah. Other ideas include mounting different tile samples, which have the benefit of being wipe-clean in a high humidity area or framing a favourite piece of fabric or a wallpaper swatch. 03 Upcycle a vanity unit Sarah upcycled this old cabinet in a shabby chic style and painted over the engraved flower motifs, while Jon cut holes for the plumbing. Her first attempt was a different pink that she admits was ‘too sickly’, but she got it right second time around. ‘You could use any piece of furniture really,’ she says. ‘We often debate about painting the cabinet and panelling darker one day. It would give the room a new look for very little cost and the monochrome tiles would fit in with any colour scheme. For now though, we're sticking with the pink.’ February 2023 95
