PHOTOGRAPHY, ANDRÉANNE GAUTHIER Be Merry FROM OUR EDITOR & Bright! STYLEATHOME.COM DECEMBER 2022 | 3 True confession: I’m one of those people who adore everything about Christmas. I love the music. I love to decorate my home (okay, no surprise there!). I love walking the neighbourhood and seeing the lights on everyone’s homes – that really is a beautiful tradition, and so welcome after the grey gloom of November. Every year, I buy something new for my tree (there’s always room for one more!). And every year, my family heads to the coun- try to enjoy the restorative beauty of nature. I’m not alone in that tradition. In this issue, Jillian Harris invites us into her family’s farmhouse in West Kelowna, B.C. (“Festive Farmhouse,” page 68). Jillian starts holiday decorating in November. By Christmas, there isn’t a Santa-free spot in the place! She is clearly a woman after my own heart. At the other end of the spectrum is a Montreal family’s getaway in Quebec’s Eastern Townships (“Let It Snow,” page 60). The owner, inspired by snow-covered fields and forests, takes a minimalistic approach to holiday decor. In between is a home designed by Shannon and Patrick Cian (“Making Merry,” page 48). This is a wonderful story that showcases how the Cians and Darlene Rupke, owner of Petal Academy, decked the halls, walls, mantels and more of a client’s home using DIY kits from Darlene’s company. And there’s also the enchanting home of designer Danielle Lagah and Oakley Thompson (“Home for the Holidays,” page 80). It’s one of those rare places that marry chic with cozy comfort, and in such a personal way. Picture Victoriana reimagined for the 21st century. We have expert advice for entertaining in Karl Lohnes’ inter- view with Sebastien and Sheila Centner (Insider’s View, page 22), who also share their favourite dinner party recipes in “Some Enchanted Evening” (page 90), and Samantha Pynn brings wel- come calm to the season with her advice for no-fuss holiday decor (page 14). The issue is packed with holiday gifts, decor and hosting ideas. I’m so happy to share it with you, but most of all, I want to share my wishes for peace in your home, your heart and all across the globe. Happy Holidays! For a vibrant scheme, add decorations in complementary yellow and orange. I love a wreath hung from a jewel- toned ribbon in the window – no need for a bow, just loop the ribbon through the wreath and secure it to the wall. Take colour cues from art, as we did (right), and add flourishes from nature: a console topped with greenery and candles in vases or a large rustic bowl of pinecones, pears or chestnuts on the table is all you need. Tree Tips With so many of us living in condos, a giant tree isn’t always an option. Instead, opt for a small tree on a side table. To give a potted tree polish, wrap it in burlap and add a bow or display it in a basket or prized planter. Eco-tip: replant a living tree after the sea- son. My go-to tree substitute is branches in a large vessel on a dining table or console. Leave the branches bare, hang your favou- rite ornaments or adorn it with sweet paper snowflakes. Pick up branches at the grocery store or nursery, or try a florist for specialty branches like willow or manzanita. 14 | STYLEATHOME.COM DECEMBER 2022

I’m a big fan of holiday decor that you can feast on! As many traditions do, this one stems back to my childhood. My mom and I would make our 6 own advent calendar by hanging 24 chocolate angels on the tree. You can also hang gingerbread cookies, popcorn and gumdrops on garlands and trees. Glass jars filled with candy are a fanciful way to bookend a mantel, or fill bowls with clementines, plums or peppermints. Guests love the treats and there’s nothing to pack into storage once the holidays are over. Just be careful with sweets if you have children: on the second day of Christmas, my mom came home to me on the floor amid a sea of gold foil wrappers! Happy holiday decorating! TEXTKARLLOHNES PHOTOGRAPHY, GEOFF FITZGERALD/DOLCE MEDIA lends itself to accommodating more standing guests than you can seat. Sheila: Another option is to set up a buffet meal in the kitchen, where everyone can help themselves and then sit in smaller groups throughout. Apartment and condo buildings often have a common space that can be booked for a private event, or you can host in the private dining room of a local restaurant, small venue space or local hotel. Entertaining groups can get expensive, so don’t be afraid to team up with friends or family. If your friend has the space and you’re ready to do the heavy lifting on the rest, it’s a match made in dinner party heaven! In work and life, they create wel- coming, spectacular events where guests and hosts can celebrate together. Who better to ask for holiday entertaining advice? KL: Entertaining can be hard for people who live in small spaces. Any ideas for accommodating more guests than your home can comfortably hold? Sebastien: We recommend adjusting the type of event you are hosting to fit the space. DECORATING THE HOLIDAYS, Designer Patti Wilson TWO WAYS combines nostalgia and contemporary elegance for a fresh and thoroughly personal approach to holiday decorating. CLASSIC TEXT MARTHA UNIACKE BREEN PHOTOGRAPHY MIKE CHAJEKI STYLING PATTI WILSON esigner Patti Wilson credits her love of Christmas decorating to her mother’s magical approach to the holiday. So, this year, with sons Connor and Logan home for the holidays, it felt like a good time to celebrate the season especially brightly. In more formal areas of Patti’s home, like the dining room, she opted for a classic, elegant look well suited to welcoming friends and family for drinks and dinner. But for the kitchen and family room, with their contemporary and mid- century influences, the mood is more relaxed. Yet throughout her home, it’s the connection to family – tableware lovingly passed down from mother to daughter, ornaments familiar since childhood – that pulls everything together. 28 | STYLEATHOME.COM DECEMBER 2022

PHOTOGRAPHY, VALERIE WILCOX DECEMBER 2022 ALL IS CALM It’s easy to get carried away by the hustle and bustle of the holidays. And, truth be told, that can be half the fun. Like most things in life, balance is key. So whether you are navigating “city sidewalks, busy sidewalks, dressed in holiday style” or you are out in the country and “walking in a winter wonderland,” we hope you make time to pause, enjoy yourself and find beauty wherever you may be.
Set the Scene A garland-making kit from Darlene Rupke’s Petal Academy was used to decorate the hallway banister in this home designed by Shannon and Patrick Cian. The Cians’ son Lenny, 2, approves of the vintage scooter that doubles as holiday decor. A dough bowl filled with aromatic pinecones sits atop the entryway’s tile floor with its inlaid brass horse. Outside, a handmade wreath on the front door (opposite) shares space with cast-iron urns filled with dogwood, cedar, box- wood, grasses, magnolia and grapevines. Handmade holiday adornments and handcrafted furnishings bring cheerful charm to a snow-white farmhouse. TEXT BETHANY LYTTLE | PHOTOGRAPHY VALERIE WILCOX usband-and-wife design duo Shannon and Patrick Cian of Cian Design describe their signature style – honeyed wood tones and creamy whites – as quietly modern. Spare yet warm, it’s a look that melds graciously with historic spaces, such as their clients’ late-1800s farmhouse nestled in an equestrian setting northwest of Toronto. “When the time came to decorate their home for Christmas, natural winter elements, such as cedar boughs and eucalyptus, came to mind,” says Shannon. This led to a creative collaboration with Darlene Rupke, owner of Petal Academy. The result is a holiday- ready home that celebrates nature and the beauty of all things handmade.
