Basically one month from first diagnosis to almost dying in hospital. I was physically destroyed by it. I was 25 and felt like the world had been closed off to me’, Tristan explains. After receiving a life-saving kidney transplant in 2016, he returned to the Mountains. ‘It was not as easy as I’d hoped. I needed a lot of physical rehabilitation. When I first resumed training and work after my kidney transplant, my body was broken. My confidence had taken a huge blow. Without the encouragement and guidance of my peers and teachers I could not have made it’, Tristan says. ‘My TAFE teachers really helped me through my recovery, retraining and career restart. They showed me what was possible in the outdoors and how to guide and teach.
